Lou Andreas-Salomé, the woman who enraptured 19th century Europe’s greatest minds, recounts her life to Ernst Pfeiffer in this German film directed by Cordula Kablitz-Post. A published novelist, poet and essayist, Salomé’s desire to live a life free from convention scandalized society but spurred genius and passion in others, including Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul Rée and her lover, the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Under the tutelage of Sigmund Freud, she became the first female psychoanalyst.

This German language film is called "Lou Andreas-Salomé" (2016) but has been absurdly retitled in english as “In Love with Lou — A Philosopher’s Life.” I assume this was because it was rightly felt that American moviegoers wouldn’t know who Andreas-Salomé was (let’s not forget that “The Madness of King George III” had to be renamed in the US as simply “The Madness of King George” because test audiences said they didn’t understand the film because they hadn’t seen The Madness of King George I and Part II.)

i liked this, but maybe for the wrong reasons.
it’s is beautifully shot and well done, the locations are just gorgeous, and the way they made the characters come out of pictures to show the places in the correct time period was very clever. those were nice things.
i could fall in love with andreas-salomé for her letters and writings, but i sense that this biopic failed in showing her as a person and showed just a version with some of the less interesting aspects enhanced. it made every character like that actually.
it’s not wonderful but it’s enjoyable, and a good way to make her more known.

If [Nietzsche, Rée, Rilke, and Freud] were the ones the history books wanted to highlight as geniuses, they would surely relegate Lou to "muse." But as Kablitz-Post and cowriter Susanne Hertel explain, nothing could have been further from the truth.

Yet another film about a profoundly interesting female artist that chooses to focus almost exclusively on her relationships with men. At least in this case the men are Rilke, Nietzsche, and Freud who we see portrayed as essentially love-struck children, but wouldn’t it be more fascinating if, like with something like Three Colours : Blue, the filmmakers were able to offer us something, anything, concerning this incredible woman’s internality? Anyway. Worth watching just to catch a glimpse of Liv Lisa Fries. Brb going to perfect my German just so one day I can maybe buy LLF a drink.
