Autopsy Results In For LSU Student Who Died Following Alleged Hazing Incident

The East Baton Rouge Coroner's Office said Maxwell Gruver, 18, a Roswell, Georgia, native, died Thursday after being taken to the hospital.

EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH, LA — The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office has released initial findings of an autopsy conducted on a Louisiana State University student who died shortly after being taken to a hospital. Coroner Dr. William "Beau" Clark said the autopsy on Maxwell Gruver, 18, a Roswell, Georgia, native, did not reveal any internal or external trauma on or within his body.

Gruver, a freshman at the university, was taken from a fraternity house to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital on Thursday where he died shortly after arriving, Clark previously told Patch. CNN.com reports Gruver was a pledge with Phi Delta Theta and his death is being investigated as stemming from a possible hazing incident (Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. The autopsy's preliminary findings did show Gruver, a Blessed Trinity Catholic High School graduate, suffered "marked cerebral and pulmonary edema," or swelling, and blood and urine tests conducted at the hospital show "highly elevated blood alcohol level" and the presence of THC in the student's urine. THC is the chemical compound in marijuana that causes the feeling of euphoria.

For its part, LSU has suspended all Greek activities following the death, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The Phi Delta Theta headquarters also said it's investigating Gruver's death and has suspended the LSU chapter's operations while the case is ongoing.

"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Gruver family, and all who knew Maxwell, during this very difficult time,” Bob Biggs, executive vice president and CEO at Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters, said in a statement.

Biggs added officials at the headquarters have been cooperating with the campus's probe as well as with law enforcement personnel.

“We’re committed to investigating this situation thoroughly," Biggs continued. "The chapter and any individuals who are found to have violated our policies will be held accountable."
