NBCUniversal is ending the deal that streamed shows on Hulu the day after they aired. Instead, NBC is shifting priorities toward its own streaming service, Peacock.

NBC shows will no longer be available on Hulu day-after-air starting with fall 2022 season. The Comcast-owned programmer officially terminated its next-day TV streaming deal with Hulu, which is majority-owned by Disney.

The change will go into effect with the next TV season, starting in late September, for next-day and library content.

With the change, new episodes of popular NBC shows such as “Saturday Night Live,” “The Voice” and “Law & Order: Organized Crime” — along with the rest of NBCU’s broadcast and cable lineup for the 2022-23 season — will no longer be available on Hulu.

This specific licensing change was anticipated by earlier reports, and an NBCUniversal strategy to reserve more of its content for Peacock had been on the march long before that. The move comes amid ever-heightening stakes in streaming. Peacock, which launched in mid-2020, has drawn 16 million premium subscribers thus far from both stand-alone customers and those who have it bundled in with their pay-TV or broadband packages. Overall monthly active use is at 24.5 million accounts, which is ahead of initial projections.

Certain high-profile titles will remain on Hulu for years to come, of course, and the door remains open for future licensing deals between the companies. Hulu still has rights into the future for many film catalog titles and series like Law & Order: SVUThis Is UsThe Mindy Project30 RockParenthoodFriday Night Lights and Will & Grace.
