THE SILMARILLION casting

as ERU ILLÚVATAR

Originally, I chose Peter O'Toole to play Eru but out of respect I think Max von Sydow is the next best choice.

As many of you who have read THE SILMARILLION, Eru is Creator of all Tolkien's creations so he needs to exude that somewhat "patriarchal" aura of the highest degree/order about him.

as MANWË

Manwë is described as very "godly" and powerful yet compassion enough. Thus, casting for Crowe would be perfect for that role as the King of the Valar.

He is neither too old nor is he too young. He displays that somewhat authoritative figure but at the same time shows humanity. Forget about his "tantrums" that he displayed once at a New York hotel.

What appeals to me about Crowe to play Manwë was his ability to show a humanity-side of all creation that he portrayed in THE GLADIATOR especially when he mourned for his wife's and son's death but patient and resilient enough to wait for his strike against the Emperor of Rome, Commodus.

as VARDA

Forlani's unique beauty is what captivated me to cast her as Varda. Tolkien described Varda as "Lady of the Stars"; and thus she does look the part indeed. It's that somewhat "celestial" feature of Forlani that I think she'd make a great Varda.

Plus, there was one illustration of Varda that I saw once on Google that closely resembled Forlani and I thought there SHE is. That is VARDA.

as YAVANNA

Yavanna, to me, is seen a "Mother of the Earth". A Greek equivalent to Gaia, if you will.

Other than Zurer's exotic features that are very apparent to earthly features she also exudes that motherly feel about her. Her earthy features are very essence of the floras of the Earth, and even to world of Arda.

Perhaps, her work as "Vittoria Vetra" in ANGELS & DEMONS is what drew me to cast her as Yavanna - a strong woman yet motherly in nature.

as ULMO

Forget about Butler's Leonidas in "300".

From Tolkien's descriptions of Ulmo and after seeing numerous illustrations of Ulmo, the Lord of Waters comes across to me as a "Father of the Earth" figure. Perhaps, the male counterpart of Yavanna.

Butler has that strong male presence about him. He is the second in command after Manwë (if you omit Melkor out) on Arda and therefore he should have that strong features which is very unpredictable and menacing but at the same time soothing and calm; which are the very features of waters of the oceans, seas, streams, etc.

as OROMË

I first recognized Clarke in ZERO DARK THIRTY and his character demeanor was rightly aggressive and excellent as an no-nonsense go-getter. In other words, he means serious business.

So to have Clarke playing the huntsman of the Valar would be superb. I could just imagine Clarke riding on his horse Nahar and blowing on his horn, Valaróma, driving all fell creatures of Morgoth away.

Heck, even I'm scared at the thought of it.

as AULË

Even though Aulë is, essentially, the "Father of the Earth" having to endeavor in the earthly physical matters such as the mountains, hills and all other earthly objects such as gold and silver Edgerton has that rugged features of a man who had worked and toiled the earth for years.

as TULKAS

Tulkas is described as one who laughed in the face of challenge but still strong in his demeanor just as Oromë is.

as LÓRIEN

As clichéd as this might sound, Lórien, after all, was a Master of Dreams and Visions. Thus, Somerhadler's "dreamy" persona fits perfectly for this role. Along with his "dreamy" blue eyes, he'd be fit in well.

as NESSA

as MANDOS

As keeper of Dead, so to speak, Mandos possessed that somewhat grimness feature about him. There's a dark aura that I associate Fiennes with Mandos.

As much as I hate to link anything with the recent remakes of CLASH/WRATH OF THE TITANS, I do feel that Fiennes has that "under-worldly" characteristics about him which makes him perfect to be Mandos.

as VÁNA

Being the youngest of the Valar, Vána should be one who exudes youth of all the Valar.

as MELKOR, MORGOTH BAUGLIR

At the risk of typecasting, Strong is one of the best actors around to play the fallen Vala.

as SAURON

With no other mainstream actor actually playing Sauron, other than Lawrence Makoare in THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, Cumberbatch might as well reprise his role from THE HOBBIT.
