The following contains spoilers for the Season 5 premiere of Mom.
In Thursday’s Season 5 premiere of Mom, Adam proposes to Bonnie not once, but twice.
At the beginning of “Twinkle Lights and Grandma Shoes,” Adam returns from a six-week movie shoot and tells Christy that he’s about to pop the question. Rather than ask Bonnie at the burger shack where they had their first official date, Christy encourages Adam to take her mother to a fancy restaurant. There he has the waiter hide the engagement ring in a dessert soufflé, which ultimately catches fire, nearly wrecking the proposal. After initially saying yes, Bonnie whips herself into a frenzy worrying about the possibility of things not working out, removes the engagement ring and makes a beeline for the nearest exit.
The next day, Bonnie heads over to Adam’s apartment to apologize. She tells him the proposal caught her off-guard, and she wants him to ask again. When he does, her answer is… “No!”
Later, Bonnie meets Marjorie, Jill and Wendy for lunch and fills them in on the second failed proposal. “I told my mouth to say ‘yes,’ but ‘no’ just came flying out,” she explains. At this point, she realizes the only way forward is to take matters into her own hands. After wandering back to Adam’s for apology sex, she surprises her boyfriend by proposing to him this time around. He accepts, then mutters something about being “together forever,” which triggers her anxiety anew.
Bonnie returns home to Christy and tells her that she’s afraid of getting married. Christy suggests that her mother “approach marriage like you do staying sober: one day at a time.” For now, she says, Bonnie can stretch out the engagement for years without ever actually setting a date. Bonnie ultimately has a month and day in mind (June 19), but leaves the year TBD.
Elsewhere in the episode…
* Christy passes her LSAT with an “average score,” paving the way for her to fulfill her law school dreams.
* Anxious about the possibility of losing foster-daughter Emily, Jill has resorted to stress-eating, and, as a result has packed on a few pounds. (For those who don’t know, this storyline was written to accommodate Jaime Pressly’s real-life pregnancy; she gave birth to twin boys in October.)
* With Christy’s help, Emily’s biological mother Natasha gets a job busing tables at the diner.
* Also of note: The opening title sequence has gotten an update. Now included are photos of Marjorie, Jill and Wendy. Gone is the family portrait featuring Violet and Roscoe, who have only made a handful of appearances since Season 2.

Just so you know..Jaime Pressley has already had her twin boys.
Ah, indeed. The story has been amended.
It was ok.
Sometimes I feel the show makes light of the disease of addiction.
I lost my son to alcohol addiction.
Not funny.
I’m sorry for your loss. For what it’s worth, I’m a recovering alcoholic who’s been sober for three years and this show, and its humor about the disease, massively helped me when I was trying to turn things around. Alcoholism isn’t funny, but this show is, and it’s doing God’s work by being that way.
I felt that way last season, butI I think they’ve addressed it now, discussing the difficulties, pitfalls of seeking sobriety–they also objected to Mom’s half brother’s continued drug use –Last season I complained to Lorre about sexual inuendo, & sex acts, during prime time when kids are up.
Why would you bring up “butt stuff” on prime time tv?
So much for “God’s work”
Because America has a stick up its butt and it feels good to rub some stuck up conservative feathers?
Those that don’t know this stuff from checking out some dark places of the interweb that is.
I thought it was hilarious!
I thought Bonnie and Adam’s first date was at that restaurant. He told her the story about how he became paralyzed in a skiing accident.
Exactly right. The writers messed up
So I guess that Violet and Roscoe aren’t going to be seen in the show again anytime soon since they were taken out of the credits and will only be acknowledged in a passing conversation and then never brought up again and won’t focus on Christy being a, you know, “Mom”?
Will Baxter and wife and Roscoe still be part of the cast? What about Violet? No pictures with kids were in the new opening. I think that it would be a mistake to erase them from the show.
I agree, I loved a Roscoe and the love that Christy has for them is seen. I would love to see him back.
Great show! My stress reliever.. 😀
We’re faithful Mom fans. First 4 seasons great. Please don’t change opening/song . Baxter, Roscoe, restaurant staff /French Stewart, meetings, bistro chats great. Not sure about Natasha or engagement. Strength is Christy/Bonnie, AA friends and tenants. Adam’s ex-wife fun.
why did they get rid of Roscoe and violet on moms they get red violet I like them on that show
I was shocked at the size of Jill! Did Jaime really get That FAT when she was pregnant?! I mean her Face is 4x’s as large as it used to be. WOW
Make up and prosthetics
Lol frakkin love this show Mom. I only wish you could have worked the surprise twins in the show since Jill has been wanting kids so bad clever way of covering it tho. Great job keep it coming!!!
Don’t cancel it like you did Mike and Molly
I’m still upset about that ….
I agree…I loved Mike and Molly! Melissa McCarthy is this era’s Lucille Ball. She’s a fabulous comic!!!
I watched the first episode of season 5 in the Netherlands last friday. I love the show. I call it sitcom noir, because of the dark edge of AA.
I don’t miss roscoe or violet.
I miss Roscoe and Violet!
I do too and think it’s a mistake to just drop them in this way. Why can’t they at least make occasional appearances? Roscoe was a really charming kid. Please re-think this plot development
The show is called moms I love it but why aren’t Christy’s children on the show anymore?
Drop Emily & her mom. Bring back roscoe, violet, baxter & his wife. They were way funnier. After 5 episods this show seems to have lost something this season. Watched it from the beginning and it was always hilarious. Not so much this season. Too bad.
I completely agree with you Jeffrey. It happens to almost every good show (of which there are very few on mainstream television) where something just shifts. The canned laughter is louder, the jokes more corny and obvious. Well basically just not as original – or funny…. Sigh Bring back the family and the ex and his new girlfriend. I’ll still watch because I love the cast but I’ll be a little sad.
I love the show ! Sober 33 years ! Just have to say there are no leaders in AA meetings w clip boards !!!!!
I JUST wish they wouldn’t be so nasty. I love the show and the cast is awesome. I saw a advertisement and Bonnie mentioned being horny. REALLY? There are CHILDREN watching. TV Land use to be a clean channel.
I’m trying to figure out why are the kids not in season 5 will somebody please explain
What happened to kids it made the me want to watch it always sad and mad you took away don’t know if I still will watch!!!!!!!
Do not like the Jill weight gain. There could have been other ways to deal with her pregnancy
Love this show, but for adults…still too much sexual encountersbetween non-marrieds, duting prime time.
Love Alison in this sjow & Adams character
As always, just like Mike and Molly, this show is great first four seasons, then someone stirs what is already great into like warm at best. Baxter, Violet, and Roscoe completed real life situations and hilarious. Now, Christy isn’t a mom. No offense but Jody and Emily not as cool the aforementioned. Should of left great alone.
Love the show!! Baxter needs to come back!! He is hilarious the 3 of them together are wonderful!! It seem odd that the kids are just both gone. Also her not working that all changed the dynamic of the show.. Love Allison and Anna..wonderful hilarious show!!
Bring some if them.back!!
Just curious as to why a mom& adult daughter sleep in the same bed.
I know lots of people do,but twin beds certainly is a better option& the bedroom they show looks like there is enough room.Just sayin’.
I think their shared bed is really creative, uniquely them, and a place for some of their best scenes. Such a great show.
I don’t like any of the story lines in season 5. I don’t like Adam’s constant drinking and drug use in front of Bonnie (didn’t start with season 5). Don’t like christy dating Adam’s brother– creepy. Don’t like Baxter, Violet, and Roscoe gone (and the restaurant too). I loved this show until they started messing with it. Violet did a fantastic job! So did Baxter. I don’t think this will go much longer. What a shame. Janney/Ferris are fantastic together.
That really shocked me also. The whole concept was Christie belittling her mother for being such a bad mom getting Jabs in every other second. And now her kids are just gone and she’s a horrible mother also
