Mom‘s series finale suffered from a serious hoodie — err, Christy deficiency.
The CBS comedy wrapped on Thursday without an appearance by former co-lead Anna Faris, who vacated the role of Christy Plunkett ahead of Season 8. In the wake of Faris’ departure, Christy was shipped off to Georgetown Law School in Washington D.C., on a full scholarship.
Asked if Faris was invited to reprise her role in the final episode, Mom co-creator Gemma Baker would only say this: “We felt that it was important to honor [Faris’] decision to leave the show. The audience knows that Christy traveled a great distance over seven seasons and overcame so many obstacles in order to follow her dream of becoming a lawyer, and it felt like that story had been addressed in a satisfying way, so we didn’t revisit it for the finale.”
As for why there wasn’t a more direct reference to Christy in the episode — she was referred to not by name, but as Bonnie’s daughter — Baker maintains that “the way she was mentioned casually indicates that Bonnie and Christy are very much still in contact, and that that relationship has really healed.” (For more from our conversation with Baker about the series finale, click here.)
The most recent acknowledgment of Christy’s life out East came in the Feb. 18 episode, when Bonnie discovered that her daughter had begun dating a man named Bennett. Then in the April 1 installment, Adam stumbled upon an old billboard from Christy’s days as a stripper, which Bonnie chose to hide from her daughter.
In addition to Christy, the Mom finale referenced Bonnie’s beloved “grandkids” — Violet and Roscoe — during her last share in Alcoholics Anonymous. Though they haven’t appeared on screen since Seasons 6 and 4, respectively, the sitcom had implied in episodes past that Christy maintained a relationship with Roscoe, who chose to live with his father, Baxter, and his stepmother, Candace. As for Violet, she previously made the decision to cut off all contact from Christy following her less-than-stellar childhood.
Were you hoping to see Christy — and maybe even her kids — during Mom‘s series finale?
Just finished watching Mom. There are so many stories left open here. I really hope they continue them somewhere.
I agree. There are so many things going on they could have kept the show going.
I agree the show was so good with Kristy and without, all the show was about everyone, all the lady’s were great, they really were funny and all kept the storyline going never a boring show and bring Adam and Bonnie together really made a great. Storyline. I will miss this shoe. Sorry to see it go.
I loved Christy in the show and I’d love to show in general they all became part of my family I will miss them
I thought they should have had her on a zoom call during the wedding. She would have wanted to see it.
Please , I hope they bring it back!! We all love the show!!! Had so many laughs, when we needed some happiness. They are survivors, always working on troubles. Maybe even showing others, you can survive this thing! Addiction!!! There is hope out there. So sad, great job! The Cast! You all are incredible actors!!
Not really explained when she could have at least had a phone conversation with her mother about Adam or a call to Jill about her good news. Thought that Christy and Jill were supposed to be best friends.
I really wish Mom wasn’t canceled. I love the show and all the actresses/actors. They are great. Please don’t cancel another great show.
Should have been an hour finale with one more ep for the season. Jill’s wedding and Bonnie’s share would have been the first half. Christy’s graduation – perhaps fast forwarding a bit with more revealed about other characters – for the second half. Glimpses of past cast members congratulating Christy or reaching out, perhaps depending on the relationships.
It felt more like a season finale rather than a series finale.
You gave Adam cancer? – so much for happy ending. In a world full of gloom why couldn’t you just end Mom with a smile? I’ve watched Mom since the beginning -I feel let down and sad. Reruns will be a downer knowing how things turn out.
Totally agree. We were really disappointed that they didn’t end it on a high note. It’s also really disappointing that Anna Faris didn’t make some kind of appearance. We’ll never know if she actually graduated law school!
The point was about how the usually self-centered Bonnie was being supportive of him … and of everyone else who needed her. Sorry you didn’t get it.
Sorry YOU don’t get it… This is a TV show. It’s not real life. You end a Comedy series with high notes all round. Having Bonnie learn how to be supportive already happened in episodes going back a coupler of years. When will comedy producers learn NOT to try to be all philosophical at three finale!
Would have like to see Violet reconcile with her mother and like to see Wendy find romantic happiness.
I still get angry at Christys daughter. Such a b—-!
Many people survive cancer. And that wasn’t really the point. The point was that Bonnie said that she and Adam would work through it together, and that she wasn’t even tempted to use once. As for Adam’s fate, pick the one YOU want, and say that happened.
The show has really been the Bonnie show for the past three or four seasons. I hate when shows discard signficant cast members like Christy’s kids and ex. First three seasons were so superior to the rest.
Should have left on a high note. No need to have a cancer scare. Her daughter and grandchildren should’ve been part of it.
The high note was about how Bonnie grew from being selfish to being supportive of people who needed her.
Or they asked her and she said no. By the way Anna left right before the season started filming, I still think there was still something else going on other than Anna wanted to do other things.
Specially since she was signed for season 8.
I’m inclined to agree. Something’s up and everybody is politely protecting Anna. Possibly drugs/drinking. Given the subject matter of the show, it’s not too hard to read between the lines.
Personally I would not have kept watching the show. Had I known that the characters who represnted the show. Would not have continued in the last episodes. The whole purpose for me was the lives that were impacted by their adictions. I wanted to know how they were able to endure.
Anna Faris is doing other things. Her character was in the show less and less, as Bonnie took over. And her role was less of a pivotal character and more a side. It was quite a snub and I do not blame her for leaving. Leaving her out of the finale was a huge snub. As much as I liked the other characters, excluding Bonnie, the show lost something vital when Christy left.
I haven’t ever cried during a tv show but this was a first.
Will miss this show so much.
I didn’t miss her as much as I thought I would, honestly. Obviously being a finale (of a TV show called MOM, no less), I would’ve liked to have to seen Bonnie and Christy together again. Even Violet and Roscoe. But was okay with allusions to them, especially with the newcomers there to mirror that early Bonnie/Christy relationship.
I think they did the best they could given the circumstances.
So the estrangement from her children ‘concluded her story in a satisfying way?’
Yikes, it’s not the darkest timeline, but it is in no way satisfying unless you completely forget Violet and Roscoe’s last appearances on the show. The relationship with the former is still incredibly fractious and the latter had it revealed that he was already drinking and smoking before even becoming a teenager.
Yeah, happy days for the younger members of the Plunkett family…
We never got a proper goodbye to Christy, so this only partly rings true. I think they did choose not to invite her but not necessarily sure it was for the exact reasons he gave.
I have never been so disappointed in a series finale in my life. Everything was just left hanging. We don’t know if Adam does have cancer or how Jill and Andy do through pregnancy and marriage. Baxter was not on. Too many loose ends and not enough cast appearances.
I’m just sad the show ended. There was so much more. I actually enjoyed it more without Christie. As a parent of a child with mental health and addiction issues i really needed these stories

I wonder if they’res drama behind the scenes? Why wouldn’t Anna be back for the finale I found that they didn’t honour any last characters especially christy
I felt this show was definitely the best one on the schedule. Bonnie was the draw, not Christy. Janey is a natural comedian and she relates to us better than most of Hollywood. Just loved her character! Hope another network picks it up.
Christy was and is the star. So, I never watched after she left.
That’s a cop out, Anna Farris could of came back for a cameo to visit her Mom and for Jills wedding, without changing any storyline as to why she left. Just a big let down for fans.
This show had the best comedy writing team on TV. It also was very educational about AA, while not appearing to teach or preach. It should continue for those reasons alone. I think Christy was the best character, I was rooting for her to find a good man for her, while putting up with Bonnie. Hopefully the writers can create another show based on the alcoholic recovery system, while maintaining the high quality of comedic writing.
It was okay. The finale and the final season just had a different feel without Anna Faris. The show went on just one more year without here. I know there were mixed reports about her leaving and her relationship with Allison Janney. The fact is the show worked because of both of them and getting rid of her/ her quitting did not help the situation at all. The show was not the same when she left and the audience agreed. Season 5 and 6 they averaged 10 million viewers. Season 7 it was 8 million viewers. This past season was only 5 million views – a huge 38% drop in audience. They spoke, the show was canceled.
Then replace her.Like they have in other shows. Some freak accident, plastic surgery, meet new Christy.
Loved “Mom”!!! I looked forward to Thursday night lineup. Why end the sitcom? I know I’m not the only fan or it wouldn’t have lasted as long as it did.
Story line left open, so hope it come back! The show worked with or without Christie.
Left us wanting more
I watched and when the show was over I cried for an hour racking sobs it broke my heart for so many reasons..this hurt that this wonderful show is gone it was like I lost a family member
