Bonnie finally had a good cry about missing Christy this Thursday on Mom — the first episode since CBS announced the long-running comedy would end this season.
Throughout the episode, Bonnie was spiraling, trying to figure out how best to utilize the bedroom that previously belonged to her daughter. An arts-and-crafts room for papier-mâché? Nah. A carpentry studio to repurpose old driftwood? That wouldn’t work either.
“The minute I decide what I’m going to be doing in that room, I’m in a box,” Bonnie told Trevor. But the reason she was so reluctant to choose a course of action was tied to room itself, her therapist suggested. “Perhaps someone you care about deeply used to live in it,” he said. “You don’t want to change the room because as long as it stays the same, then you can still believe that Christy might be coming back to it. Altering it means you might have to accept the fact that she might be gone for good.”
Before their session ended, Trevor gave Bonnie a homework assignment: “Before you worry about what’s going into the room, how about you worry about packing up what’s going out?” And so, Bonnie returned home to pack up Christy’s room. She headed upstairs with Tammy and opened Christy’s closet, revealing all of Christy’s tiny hoodies. (“You’d think I have a 10-year-old son!” she quipped.) When Tammy suggested that Christy left those behind for future visits, Bonnie scoffed. “Oh, like that’s going to happen!” she said. “She used to call me every day. Now I’m lucky if she calls me once a week.”
As the conversation continued, we learned that Christy has gone on two dates with a man named Bennett. The dates went well enough to tell Wendy and Tammy (and Adam, we’d soon find out), but not her own mother.
By the time Adam returned home, Bonnie was throwing Christy’s belongings out the window. Once Tammy helped him upstairs, he found his wife on the floor of Christy’s closet, crying.
“My daughter abandoned me,” she said. “I haven’t wanted to face it, but it’s true… The reason I couldn’t figure out what to do with this room is because I didn’t want to accept that Christy’s not coming back. I guess I was just was hoping she’d realize she wasn’t cut out for the winter and come home, but she’s got a good coat. She’s thriving without me.”
That’s when Adam interjected, and suggested that Christy was thriving because of Bonnie. “Christy’s not gone forever, and you’ve been so strong,” he said. “I’m not surprised it’s hitting you… Let me be strong tonight and you just let it out.”
Elsewhere in the episode:
* Just a few weeks after getting dumped by police-officer boyfriend Andy, Jill has found a potential new match in Trevor. Bonnie told Jill that her therapist was off limits, but Jill paid Trevor a visit at the end of the episode to give him a handmade tissue-box cover she crafted for his office.
* Tammy attended her first Al-Anon meeting with Adam to work through her issues with Marjorie. The bickering roommates made up by episode’s end.
Were you happy to see Bonnie feel her feelings about Christy’s absence? And are you hoping now more than ever that we’ll see Anna Faris‘ character return — with new boyfriend Bennett — in the series finale?
Best episode of the season. Allison Janey should submit this as her Emmy reel.
Absolutely!!
Yes! Everyone in this episode was fantastic. It was really well-written and acted. I loved Tammy’s introduction to Al-Anon. It was a spot-on representation. And I’m really going to miss Rainn Wilson in his roll of therapist. He’s been terrific in it.
I am Male, and never ever touched Alcohol or used drugs… but this series was always the high point of my week. The characters were so well written, and so well acted… it was a joy to watch.
I hope they do some sort of spin off.
I was glad to see Bonnie feeling like a mom again, even in a sad way. The show is called Mom and no one this season had been a real mom this year in the show until this episode….except maybe mothering each other as the AA gals do sometimes. And I do hope Christy returns for at least one episode and we see what has happened to her two offspring, before the series ends.
Please don’t cancel this show. It’s fantastic. There are a lot of people who’s lives have been immensely changed for the better. This is a great tool for alcoholics in denial that will not go to meetings !!!We will always miss Anna but it shows that you can get your life together with AA help and the show “MOM”. ❤️🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️
My favorite show! I can’t believe it is going to end!
All the girls and Adam do terrific without Christy. Keep her gone, and bring the series back for 9 & 10 without her. This season was awesome!! We love Anna Farris, but Allison Janney and the rest of the ladies totally “got this. L” Maybe a visit to let Bonnie know she’s happy and finally forgives her… and thank her for sobering up at the end.
I love this show!! Please let it keep going!!
performer of the week
Please don’t cancel. Yes, we miss Anna but the show is taking its course. The actors there are funny.. . The ratings are good. Why cancel? We need good comedy
I honestly don’t miss Anna but I will miss the ‘girls’ since Mom has one of the best supporting player teams on tv right now. Chuck Lorre has a long history of being loyal to his actors so hopefully a lot of them will show back up in new shows.
Love this show.
Love all the characters, watch as often as possible. Christy has incredible timing she is wonderful I so enjoyed her and I will miss her.
The Writing was on the spot I don’t drink I don’t smoke not addicted to anything but it means so much to hear people improving it’s very uplifting on a very negative and destructive subject.
Thank you all , Going to miss all these very talented actors .
PLEASE PLEASE don’t end this show! I love these characters & there’s still so much more that can be done with them. I hope they reconsider.
The show is not as funny any more. Everything must come to an end.
Last night’s episode was one of the best I’ve seen. I thought I would not like it without christy but Bonnie is nailing it. Please don’t end. I look forward to watching this every week. I watch the reruns every night to help wind me down after work. Best show ever. Please don’t end! Allison Janey you rocked it!!!!
It would be nice to see Christy with her boyfriend maybe coming for a weekend visit or something. Where is Violet and Roscoe ?
I’m angry that this is the final season. I counted on this show to get me through so much this last year. Covid happened and I watched reruns of Mom for months until the new season. Why???? Why end it??? I’m going to have withdrawals cause I’m addicted to Mom. Is there a support group for that? Sigh. 😢😢😢😭😭😭
Yes, i wonder what it would take for them to reconsider, for them not to cancel the show. Mom is one of the best shows on television each and every character equal in great talent. How can we not lose this show?
I wonder if ratings weren’t good. I didn’t see a reason. Did you?
This show stinks now. I don’t watch anymore. Glad it’s cancelled.
Yes, I want to see Christy again! She made the show!!
I am a 35 yr career family nurse practitioner and think this show is so good with sharp humor and addressing social issues. Whatever they come up with will be great I am sure.
Anna Faris poderia aparecer no final da temporada como participação especial pra dar um final digno para a série. Seria muito bom, já que o cancelamento se deve justamente por causa da saída dela :(
Love, love this show watch it when ever its on.
I love this show please dont end i even tape shows so i rewatch them
“Mom” is one of the smartest /funniest shows on TV, next to Frasier. It’s so relatable and Janney’s become a favorite actress of mine because of this show. Sorry to hear it’s ending, but I suspect it’s run it’s course. Farewell to an awesome show!
The very best show on tv. Not much left to watch. Great cast great story line, we laughed and sometimes wanted to cry but it always made me happy. Sure going to miss that show.
I do not want to see this show end every good comedy on tv they take it off and put something stupid on they took off last man standing now mom. If I want to look at reality shows I can just go outside the world is bad enough I watch shows like mom, last man standing, everybody loves raymond because i want to leave all the depressing reality stuff outside and relax and have a good laugh back in the day that’s what tv was for entertainment. If i want reality i will watch the news which i don’t
Great show we need more shows like this. That shows real people’s lives not reality shows.
