Read the book then rewatched the movie and this has gotta be the ultimate example of an adaptation discarding massive amounts of the source material (ya gotta, it’s a dense book) but keeping the heart and spirit of it and managing to make something just as good
A perfect movie that made America fall in love with Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce, and they're still both as a beautiful as the day we married them.

Doesn't really have the subverted genre styling or uprooted narrative conventions of most neo-noir. In practice it's just a ripping James Ellroy adaptation and a compelling mystery, but with Curtis Hanson behind the camera and Dante Spinotti as DP, it's a tantalizing mix of 90s sex and violence with the moral dilemmas of corrupt law enforcement. Each sequence unfolding onto the next, like a great novel, all while the A-game ensemble cast rises to the challenge.
