I’ve been a writer for over 15 years now, but it wasn’t planned!

I had a variety of jobs, including secretary, trainee buyer at Harrods, dental nurse, production assistant in a reprographic and printing company and various others.

I began to write after joining a creative writing class. I had no success with article writing, or short stories, or fiction, but the first children’s story I wrote, for a magazine called Twinkle, was accepted for publication. Hooray!!!

Things snowballed and a lot (yes lots and lots) of hard work later I now write full time and have over 50 books published. I still go to the same writing class and we have become a big happy family of writers!

For me, writing is the best job ever. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. I love to create worlds for young children to enjoy and escape into – whether the stories are educational, bedtime, problem solving or just plain good fun. It’s also very exciting to see the first picture roughs, as my wonderful, talented illustrators bring the text to life.

I live on the Essex coast in a lovely two-bed-roomed flat, which I share with my husband, Michael. At long last I have an office to write in, with room for all my books and bits of scribbled on papers.

The seafront is (still) just around the corner, and I find a bracing walk (it gets freezing when the East wind blows from the North Sea!) or gentle stroll when the weather is warmer, is great for clearing my head and mulling over story ideas.

Another one in my ever growing collection of books illustrated by Sarah McIntyre. And not only because of her, but also because the blurb just sounded like a wonderful thing.

This time we have a kid who is secretly a superkid who saves the day. Bullies, sharks, broccoli, they all should be afraid of superkid and his mighty little side-kick: The classroom hamster.

I really liked the main character. He was set as just another character, a boy that people would probably overlook, and that is the best disguise for a superhero. Someone who doesn't stand out too much, who is more often found in the shadows.
It was really fun seeing him go in superhero mode and help out everyone.

Also we have some cameos. The sharks are back in this book, I really liked seeing them again. They might not be exactly the same, but they still behaved the same (still hungry for nom nom humans).

I liked that we had a super hamster, though I thought at first it was a cat (the ears and how it looked), but when we see the kid change, you also see the hamster. And then you can clearly see it is a hamster.

The illustrations are colourful and fun. There are tons of details (Sarah McIntyre really loves adding those).

I think this book is perfect for kids (because don't most kids have big dreams of being a hero?), but also for adults who just want a fun and happy book.

This beautifully illustrated rhyming story is based upon a child who uses his superpowers to get through not-so-pleasant experiences! The bold and brightly coloured illustrations entertain the reader and share the delight of the adventures Superkid is on. A creative example of being able to bring the story to life through the visual images and rhythmic flow which work really well together!

A great rhyming book with clear bright illustrations and is underlined by a superhero theme which children generally are interested in. This would be a great resource when looking at onomatopoeia in context. Also would be really good for when doing a lesson for creating a story. Overall, a good book and the children in my key stage 1 class really enjoyed it.

Las ilustraciones son demasiado abigarradas y es difícil encontar los apartados de lectura. Los ejemplos de episodios donde superkid salva a otros niños son poco adecuados, pero quizás no se preste a leer en voz alta.

Pros: Overall message that even kids who look ordinary can perform extraordinary acts of kindness and bravery. Superkid can eat all the mushy veggies you don't want, clean your bedroom.

Cons: Bullies stealing gum appear early in the book, hungry sharks and pirates toward the end.

Our students are always looking for books about superheroes, and Superkid is the best kind: caring, pro-active and always on the look out for ways to help. Use as a starting point to discuss ways children can be superkids and help others too.

My Y1 placement class liked this story - 3*

Followed the superheroes theme, they enjoyed it!

To me, there wasn't much to it. There are better books out there (SUPERTATO!).
