    Peterskirche (or St Peters Church)
Originally built in 1180, it was extensively rebuilt after the city fire in 1327. Baroque ceilings and carved neo gothic columns were part of the reconstruction after the WWII. There are eight clocks on the outside of the church tower. You can climb the 300 steps to a viewing platform in the tower and see all of Munich and even the Alps. It has been known for hundreds of years as Old Peter.

Breathtaking in more ways than one
With over 300 steps to climb your breathe will be taken away long before the 360 degree view takes it away. Personally I love these sort of challenges to get to your goal and you can always catch your breathe once you have arrived at the top and admire the beautiful city surroundings. Though it is very safe, It is a bit cramped up top since the balcony is a bit narrow. If you're into collecting souvenir zero euro notes, souvenir coins and pressed pennies, you defiantly need to go.

    Yet another fine German church
Only a parish church but what a parish church! The high altar (St Peter of course) is superb as are the lovely celing frescoes. There's also some brilliant little carvings. It's only a few paces from Marienplatz and worth a few minutes of your time if you're in the neighbourhood.

    Divine !!
It is located just two minutes walk from Marienplatz. We never ever visit a church from sighr seeing point of view. We go inside, sit quietly for few few minutes and pray. St. Peter's Church was lavish. It's very soothing when you just close your eyes and sit at such a divine place. Worth visiting...

Come for the View, Stay for the Wonderful Interior
St Peter offers perhaps the best view of Munich. Located just across Marienplatz from the Rathaus, it has the huge advantage of being able to see the wonderful facade of the town hall from the top of its tower. It costs €5 to climb to the top up Barrow wooden stairways - quite steep but not so many of them as to make it too much of a trudge - and you get unparalleled views of the centre of the historic city. Even on a day when it wasn’t brilliantly clear, I could see the Olympiaturm and the shapes of the Bavarian Alps. You enter the tower from outside the church but emerge inside, where the gorgeously decorated ceiling and nave are worth sitting and admiring. A great church all round.

    Originating point of Munich
St. Peter's church is the oldest church in the city therefore it is probably the originating point of Munich. It is a Roman Catholic church and its tower is one of the landmarks. I can recommend visiting for tourists.

1.50 Euros. Admittedly there are a lot of steps to climb, which people just love me that I drag them up towers at all hours of the day! However they are usually grateful when they get to enjoy the views once at the top.

As unfortuantely in every such attraction in Europe it seems, there is graffiti in the stairway. Nothing graphic, just annoying graffiti. I'm not paerticularly religious but this is, afterall, a chucrch!

The day we went up the tower it was a little overcast, kind of hazy, but the views over the Altstadt were still pretty and I could see all the way to the Olympic Park; easily distinguished by the large television tower. could not see as far as the Alps but still worth the jaunt up there.

Centrally located and good spot to get your bearings of Munich. Munich is pretty but also businesslike. It is not a kitsch town; this is a working town, good for shops, the odd site or two and some good german food and drink.

Afterwards as a treat for making it up the stairs we got a massive stein of beer! Remember that excuse for a nice cold one!

There are quite a few church visits you can make in the Old Town of Munich including Peterskirche (St. Peter's Church) just to the south of Marienplatz. This is a landmark building, one of the oldest in the city.

The exterior is subtle, featuring a 91-metre tall tower, which can be climbed for views of the Old Town if interested. The interior of St. Peter's is nice as well. It is Baroque and Rococo in style, includes an attractive nave with columns lined with gilded statue figures.

You'll find fine stucco work, ceiling frescos and an impressive high altar, the work of Erasmus Grasser (1492). The pulpit and side chapels are worth spending time to enjoy as well. Near the back entrance, there is historical information regarding church foundations and expansions through the centuries.

In the end, you can easily spend 10-20 minutes enjoying the interior of St. Peter's Church. This church can conveniently included in sightseeing around Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt area of the Old Town.

I have no idea why this is #15 (at the time I'm writing this) of things to do in Munich. If you are in good health, you have to get to the top of St. Peter's Church.
It's about 700 or so years old, and the view from the top is incredible.

This is the oldest church in Munich (built around 1200). It has recently been rejuvenated with lots of gold, but the alter is still striking. The alter changes during Lent and a tapestry hides two of the columns. It is magnificent just as well. In the second chapel on the left is a dazzling skeleton bedecked with jewels and gold. One could say that St. Mundita took it with him.

One can take the 300+steps up the tower to the best view in all of Munich. On some days, the Alps are plainly visible.

The views from the top of the tower are great, and the walk up around 300 steps is definitely worth it. However, there was absolutely no management of numbers going up the tower, and no system to control the flow of people going up and down the same set of stairs at the same time. As a result, the climb up and down was more uncomfortable than required (continually encountering people going the opposite way, no space) and then when we got to the top, we were stuck in the same position for a long time, and it took over half an hour just to complete a single lap around the small balcony as they were admitting people continually, no regard for how many people already up there, allowing it to become more and more crowded in the scorching sun, with absolutely no breathing space at all at the top.

This was going to be one of the highlights of our trip to Munich - a beautiful Tuesday in August with stunning views of the city and compared with lots of similar attraction pretty cheap. The entrance to the tower is through a small door and you start climbing a narrow staircase (properly narrow, as in shoulders brushing the wall either side). I assumed that it was a one-way system with people descending via a different staircase - until I met the first people coming down. At various points on the way up we had to give way and allow people to pass but it was bearable. When we got to the top, there were two exits to the outside of the tower and signs indicating that visitors should walk round in one direction. However you could go out of either the left hand or right hand entrance which on the busy day that we visited had resulted in gridlock. After 10 minutes waiting, with the queue behind me now blocking the stairs, preventing people from descending, my wife and son made it out on to the walkway round the tower. A further 5 minutes later and I made it outside too, having moved 3 meters in 15 minutes. At this point I received a text from my wife a few places ahead of me, suggesting that I give up and go down as she and my son were stuck and couldn't move forwards or backwards. It took a further 20 minutes to negotiate the queue on the narrow staircase in order to descend. Such a shame - the little that I saw of the view did indeed look good, but the disorganisation, lack of staff and total and complete lack of management was appalling. If you're visiting on a wet day in January, I'm sure you'll be able to sprint up and down the stairs without issue, but if you want to visit on a nice day in summer, I can't recommend it.

This church, like many in Munich, was rebuilt after WWII. It has a long history of interest and is very impressive. Sadly, the tower which offers spectacular views over the Munich skyline is closed until 11 April. Disappointing but best to know in advance!

St. Peter's Church dates back to the 12th century. This is a truly beautiful church that is active. Depending upon the time of the day, and whether or not worship services are being conducted, one may not be able to walk around the beautiful interior and take pictures. It is worth coming back for a second try. Walking around the exterior of the church is worthwhile. If feeling ambitious and healthy, a climb up the tower offers a great view of Marienplatz below. There is no elevator. Persons interested in church history, architecture, and photography will enjoy visiting this historic church.

The church is interesting and with free entrance but the best is that you can ascend to the tower and to have the best view of Munchen. It only costs 1.5€, but the downside is that you have to go up through narrow stairs and there isn't any elevator.
