Relink Media that's not in the Media Pool?

PostThu Aug 27, 2020 11:31 am

Background: Use PluralEyes to sync media. Import PluralEyes timeline. Copy/paste synced audio/video into project timelines. Put Audio and Video media into their respective Bins. Realize that my PC folder structure is wrong, and so move the media on the PC to a new Windows folder. Try to relink and I can't.

My media is offline and I can't relink because -- I think -- the system thinks the media is not in my Media Pool. *I* can find the media in my media pool, but Resolve must think I removed the media it was linked to, or something:

So, how do I relink media that Resolve does not think is in my Media Pool?
And/or, how do I help Resolve relink the Timeline references to the "new to it" Media Pool media?

Is there something else I'm totally missing here?

Thanks so much!

~Luke

P.S. All this is likely due to the fact that I'm using PluralEyes and I don't have a perfect workflow. I've noticed, for example, that if I re-import a Timeline and let Resolve bring in the Media again, I'll have two difference Media Pool instances of the same clip ... and if I remove one of them, it will disconnect on the Timeline and the other will remain. So this crops up in various places for me.

What exactly happens when you try to Relink from the Media Pool?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I assume the clips in the Media Pool get relinked to themselves. They are not showing offline and are already properly linked. The media is there, but it's not "connected" to the offline clips on the Timeline. So ... in another sense, "nothing" happens to the Timeline clips because Resolve doesn't think they are associated with one another.

So, the Media is in the Pool, but the "reference" in the Timeline isn't ... even though it's the same media.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure how to better explain this. The Media is in the Pool, but the Timeline clips are associated with a difference instance of the clips that are no longer in the Media Pool. So I can't relink the Timeline clips because they don't point to anything -- clicking "Find in Media Pool" does nothing, for example -- even though I know where the Media is.

... that help at all?

Thanks so much, Jim!

What about using File -> Reconform From Bins?

1. On the Timeline, select all the clips that show as offline and then disable Conform Lock via the right-click context menu (might be an option in the main menu as well.)
2. File -> Reconform From Bins.
3. Point it to the bin(s) that contain the clips.
4. Fill out the filters such that the appropriate files will be identified. This could be as simple as choosing File Name Matching -> Tight, given you have clips with the same filenames. You could also choose the Total Duration filter as well, and/or Timecode, as a further safety net.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 4 for any other affected Timelines or Compound Clips.

6. It's also possible to run this en masse, by selecting a bunch of Timelines in the Media Pool, right-clicking then Timelines -> Reconform From Bins. I've not tested this myself, but the option appears self-explanatory. This would still require going through each timeline and doing step 1, ie disabling Conform Lock on the clips to be replaced. But it would then save repeating steps 2 - 4 for each timeline, assuming the same settings will work for multiple timelines at once.

Unfortunately step 6 is not possible for Compound Clips, which lack the Timelines context menu. Another example of an annoying and unnecessary discrepancy between Timelines and Compound clips. So if you have Compound Clips in which clips need to be replaced, you will need to follow steps 1 -4 for those, one by one.

I've used Reconform From Bins a number of times on individual timelines, for swapping original media for intermediate rendered versions. It works pretty well.

And you always have the option to Undo if it finds the wrong clips, then you can try tweaking the filters and trying again.

That is exactly what I needed! Thank you! ... I learn new things every day. I'd heard of "reconforming" before, but now I know what it is by experience [smile].

Again, thanks so much!
