"There is a rank due to the United States, among nations, which will be withheld, if not absolutely lost, by the reputation of weakness. If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known that we are at all times ready for war."

Reason For Nomination Exposed:
Obama And Hagel Have Secret Plan To Enforce Palestinian State With U.S. Troops
Excerpted from Israel National News: Hagel, at Obama's bidding, plans to send troops to Judea and Samaria (the "West Bank") where they would soon be victims of Hamas terror. It's in writing. An investigative report.
There is only one reason that Chuck Hagel was picked by President Obama to be US Defense Secretary, and why Obama will go nuclear to get him confirmed:
Hagel is the only person alive now dumb enough to deploy US "peacekeeping" troops to what is surely a "West Bank" deathtrap. Don't believe me??! Well, in early 2009, two years after Hamas violently took over Gaza, Hagel along with a ragged has-been crew of "Israel Lasters" had some strong "recommendations" for the incoming President Obama.
I will let Hagel's 2009 "recommendations" speak for themselves. But to lend a note of rationality, Florence Gaub, a NATO researcher, in 2010 published a NATO Research paper outlining some of the problems of such a deployment. (I.e. it would need about 60,000 US/Nato troops and about 160 billion Dollars over 10 years) I and I will excerpt her report as well.
Obama's determination in confirming Hagel is based on Obama's belief that Hagel will cripple Israel at any price: including the deaths of thousands of US soldiers at the hands of Hamas suicide bombs in the Palestinian Authority.

Dear Friends,
Earlier this morning I had the opportunity to go on Fox News to discuss the release of hundreds of illegal aliens in our state.
This has caused absolute chaos and it is absurd that our federal government is playing the blame game as to who ultimately allowed this release to happen.
What's even more absurd is that I didn't find out about the release of the illegal aliens until I heard it on the news!
Please take a moment to watch the video
The federal government appears to want to give Arizona a form of payback when all we have wanted to do was secure our borders and protect our citizens.
If you are as outraged as I am, please share this video on Facebook and Twitter to help spread our message.
President Obama and the federal government will not get away without giving us answers.
Thank you for your continued support!
My very best,
Jan Brewer Governor of Arizona

Stop Radical Judicial Nominee Caitlin Halligan!
|
Take Action!
|
|
|
March 3, 2013
Tomorrow, Monday, March 4th, the Senate is scheduled to vote on a cloture motion on Caitlin Halligan, another of President Obama's radical judicial nominees. The Senate rejected Halligan's nomination in the last Congress, but President Obama renominated her to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. We need you to call your Senators today and tell them to vote NO on Caitlin Halligan! Here are a few of the many reasons Senators should vote NO on Halligan: Same Sex Marriage
- As Solicitor General of New York, Halligan wrote an opinion arguing for same sex marriage, even though the state's domestic law required that marriage licenses only be issued to opposite sex couples. Halligan declared that observing the statute as written raised, "serious Constitutional concerns."
Radical Pro-Abortion Advocate
- As New York's Solicitor General, Halligan joined an Amicus Curiae brief in support of the National Organization of Women's (NOW) suit attempting to use Civil racketeering charges to shut down abortion clinic protests nationwide. The importance of Halligan's joining the amicus brief cannot be understated. One of the key purposes of the brief was to persuade the Court to rely on New York's expanded definition of property and how property can be obtained through extortion, a point she hoped that the weight of her office as New York's Solicitor General would carry. NOW's and Halligan's arguments were so radical, they were rejected by an 8-1 margin. Even Ruth Bader Ginsburg, arguably the Court's most liberal Justice wrote, "The court is rightly reluctant, as I see it, to extend RICO's domain further by endorsing the expansive definition of 'extortion."
Racial Preferences
- Halligan has joined briefs supporting racial quotas at universities. Three out of four of the policies she supported were later declared unconstitutional.
Second Amendment Rights
- As the National Rifle Association declared in its letter of opposition to Halligan's confirmation as New York's Solicitor General, she strongly supported "inside and outside the courtroom" the State of New York's activist efforts to sue gun manufacturers for crimes committed with guns. When Congress passed the bipartisan Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act to protect manufacturers from such frivolous suits, Halligan signed onto a friend of the Court brief arguing that the law was unconstitutional.
Detention of Enemy Combatants
- Halligan was a member of a bar committee that issued a report claiming it is unconstitutional for the United States to detain enemy combatants. During her testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Halligan tried to distance herself from this report; however, she also signed onto a friend of the court brief arguing the same conclusion in a case involving such detention.
Halligan is a radical activist, who has viewed the federal court system as a vehicle for making, not interpreting, policy. We need you to tell your Senators to vote NO on her confirmation tomorrow at noon. Nominees to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals are often subject to higher scrutiny than other courts. Also, unlike other Courts, the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit does not have an overwhelming caseload. In fact, there are currently more judges than necessary to manage the number of cases pending. Thus, there is no reason to rush to confirm an unfit, radical nominee. Cloture requires a 60 vote threshold, so it is still possible to stop this nominee!
Take Action!
Call your Senators today and tell them to vote NO on Caitlin Halligan!

Forced by the sequestration to trim $85 billion from the country's $3.6 trillion budget, President Barack Obama announced today that he would not deploy the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Harry Truman to the Persian Gulf as part of his plan to disband the entire United States military. "I warned Congress that these cuts did not have to happen," Obama said at a White House press conference. "The Republicans could have turned them off at any time by just compromising and raising the taxes I requested. So now they have forced me to lay off the only non-essential government employees I could find, which just happens to be all the members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. As of midnight Friday, the United States is indefensible." MORE >>

Unionized Federal Workers: We'll Get Our Pay Despite Sequester
The Heritage Network | Georgianna Nutt | March 1, 2013 at 5:33 pm
Up to 875,000 federal workers may experience mandatory unpaid leave for one day per week thanks to sequestration, resulting in a 20 percent pay cut for 22 weeks beginning April 1. But the union that represents federal workers is vowing to get that pay. National Federation of Federal Employees spokesperson Cory Byrthrow threatens that the powerful union will "absolutely fight for back pay in the event of a furlough."

Concerned gun owners hold rally in Bucks County
See video here:
By Christina Kristofic Staff Writer | Posted: Sunday, March 3, 2013 6:00 am
Some wore camouflage.
Some draped American flags over their shoulders and AR-15s and other rifles on straps around their necks.
Others dressed in simple, warm clothes and carried American flags, Gadsden flags or posters on poles.
They numbered about 200. They came from all over Bucks County and gathered on the sidewalk in front of the Bucks County Courthouse in Doylestown for about an hour Saturday morning to stand together for the Second Amendment and against proposals to ban assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.
"What's happened in the country in the past few months with the killing is not the result of lawful firearms (ownership)," said John Eperjesi, 66, of Morrisville.
"There are 80 million gun owners in this country that did not participate in (the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in) Newtown, Conn., and we're being blamed for it. The legitimate gun owners in this country are appalled as anyone else with the tragedy that happened up there, but we're not responsible. A sick individual did it."
Bill O'Neill, 72, of Holland, said he opposes any limitations on Second Amendment rights.
"It's unfortunately come down to the people being allowed to own a few types of guns and a few types of bullets. I'm against that. I support the Second Amendment completely," he said. "I don't want guns in the hands of the wrong people and, by that, I mean criminals and felons. I think there are too many illegal guns. Law enforcement should take the steps to collect the illegal guns."
Some law enforcement officials were at the courthouse during the rally Saturday, but no one asked some of the men carrying guns if they legally owned them.
"Criminals are always gonna be criminals. To take away certain items from law-abiding citizens will not make things better or safer," said Dave Zimmerman, 38, of Sellersville.
Zimmerman had an AR-15 on a strap around his neck. He said he wore it that way on Saturday to show support for the weapon. "There are a lot of guns out there that are a lot more lethal. Because of the looks of it, it looks worse. You could take two cars with the same engine and tint one out, lower it, put rims on it, make it sound loud, and it looks more aggressive. But it's still the same car as the car next to it."
Zimmerman's friend, Bruce Gold, was quick to point out that the AR in AR-15 doesn't stand for "assault rifle"; it stands for Armalite Rifle (Armalite is the manufacturer).
The AR-15 is not a bad gun, said Gold, 42, also of Sellersville.
"A gun's bad if a bad person has it," he said. "But a gun's good if a good person has it."
Several people said they believe gun ownership is a "God-given," "divine" or "natural" right.
"As a Jew, I am keenly aware that whenever a country's dictators have disarmed the public, it has led to mass exterminations of people. Hitler was one. But Mao, Stalin, in Cuba," said Linda Rosen, 63, of Doylestown. "If this right goes, we lose all of our rights."
The rally was organized by the Concerned Gun Owners of Bucks County.

PA Liquor Sales Privatization
What is going on with PA Liquor privatization? PA House majority leader Turzai will introduce a House Bill on March 4. The bill number is HB 790. This bill is supported by Governor Corbett and will essentially privatize liquor sales in Pennsylvania. With control of both the Senate and the House in the control of Republicans, this bill should "sail through" both chambers and be signed by the Governor. The problem is that not all Republicans are on the same page. Rep. John Taylor, the lone Republican House member from Philadelphia is the Chair of the House Liquor Control Committee. He has previously gutted privatization bills. He has stated that he "wants to slow things down" and "avoid the chaotic process that other states have experienced." Therefore, we need citizens to email and call members of the committee and ask them to support privatization now. Example: Dear Representative ________ I urge you to support HB 790 to privatize the PA State Stores. Please do not allow special interest amendments to slow the process down with partial privatization over time. It is time to quit talking and take the action supported by the citizens of the state and Governor Corbett. It is time to get the Commonwealth to get out of the booze business and focused on its regulatory responsibilities. Thank you. Who are the members of this committee? If your representative is on this committee organize an email and phone call operation NOW. Republican Members: Taylor, John, Chair Miccarelli, Nicholas A, III, Secretary Mustio, Mark, Subcommittee Chair on Marketing Payne, John D., Subcommittee Chair on Licensing Delozier, Sheryl M., Ellis, Brian L., Kampf, Warren, Killion, Thomas H., Krieger, Timothy Lawrence, John A., Masser, Kurt A., Petri, Scott A., Reese, Mike, Regan, Mike, Sonney, Curtis G. Democrat Members: Costa, Paul, Chair Davis, Tina M., Democratic Secretary Kotik, Nick, Subcommittee Democratic Chair on Licensing Mahoney, Tim, Subcommittee Democratic Chair on Marketing

Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania
|
HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.
"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."
Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:
- Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
- Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.
Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.
"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."
Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting RepMetcalfe.com.

Important Dates:
- February 15 - March 27, 2013 - Debt Ceiling: Sometime in this date range we are expected to reach the debt ceiling (Technically we have already hit the debt ceiling, but this is the date range when we will reach a point where the Treasury can no longer implement "extraordinary measures" to meet our spending obligations.
- February 28, 2013 - Sequestration: The "fiscal cliff" bill created a new manufactured crisis that will happen sometime at the end of February. This is when the sequestration can was kicked down the road.
- March 31, 2013 - Continuing Resolution: The current Continuing Resolution that the government is operating under expires on March 31. This means that they will have to pass a CR between now and then.
- April 15, 2013 - Budget Resolution: This is the date by law in which both Houses should have a budget resolution passed. We are already hearing that the President is late in submitting his budget, the House is reporting that they will not meet their deadline for a budget, and the Senate... well they haven't passed a budget in over 1,350 days.
Any questions, holler.

We would like to clarifiy the Prothonotary candidates for the upcoming Republican Primary are Michelle Christian (not Diane) and Pat Bachtle. It does not change a call for an open primary in this race.
Why all the fuss about a Prothonotary race?
If you have wondered what a Prothonotary is, you are not alone. In addition, whoever thought that it would be the focus of a power struggle within the Bucks County GOP for the 2013 elections?
There are two people running for Prothonotary this May. Pat Bachtle a long time incumbent and a newcomer Diane Christian. On paper this looks ok, but when you take a closer look, more questions than answers arise.
The Tea Party should be happy to see a newcomer on the ticket. Right?
We should be happy to see the incumbent challenged by a newcomer. Right? Except this newcomer was hand selected by Bucks County GOP Chairwoman Pat Poprik.
Do you remember the countless "newcomers" who have tried to run for office in the past few years? They were handily dismissed by the party leadership and told that positions only go to those who have worked hard for the party over several years. Pat Bachtle is the incumbent Prothonotary and has worked for the party for many years. Now Pat Poprik is embracing a newcomer that she has hand selected with no prior experience or record. There is clearly a double standard.
One does not have to think too hard to figure out what the reaction would be to an unknown Tea Party candidate running against an established incumbent. Remember when the GOP called the Constables to intervene against non-endorsed GOP candidates in 2010?
Why is the party chair deciding to pick this fight when Bucks County is becoming more liberal? This has the potential to leave the seat wide open for a Democrat grab. Bucks County GOP money should not be spent in a primary for a Prothonotary seat. This is foolish and wasteful use of resources.
We at The Kitchen Table Patriots
are calling for an Unendorsed Primary. Let the best candidate win. The registered Republicans of Bucks County should decide on primary election day who should be the next Prothonotary on the Republican ticket. Not a small group of GOP County Executives, half of which were appointed by the Chair of the Party. It doesn't seem like a fair process does it.
If you are a registered Republican and live in Bucks County Pennsylvania we are urging you to contact your local committee person and ask them to vote for no endorsement. If you do not know who you committee person is than call the Bucks County Republican Headquarters at 215-345-8811
Also We urge you to clear your calendar and attend the Bucks County GOP executive committee meeting on Thursday March 7 at PM. at the Republican Headquarters in Doylestown. The is the night that the executive committee, half of which were hand picked by the county chair will endorse. Come and speak your mind to your elected Executive. Let the Republican party know you are watching and paying attention.

And here's some really great news: This year's registration fee is only $229! Register by April 15th and you'll receive our "Early Bird" rate of just $189!
|
We also offer again this year special benefits for Patriot Eagle and Patriot sponsors. We have some exciting new wrinkles planned for this year's event, and our list of confirmed speakers already includes:
- Steven Emerson - Journalist, author, and the Executive Editor of the Investigative Project on Terrorism. A. M. Rosenthal, late-managing editor of The New York Times, described Emerson as "one of the nation's best national security correspondents."
- John Guandolo - Former FBI agent and one of America's leading authorities on the Muslim Brotherhood and its inner workings in America. Guandolo spoke at our conference in 2011 and received rave reviews from conference attendees!
- Ezra Levant - Canadian lawyer, author, newspaper columnist with Sun Media, and former publisher of the Western Standard. Hauled before a Canadian "human rights commission" because he published the Danish cartoons that satirized Muhammad, Levant's personal account of a politically correct government inquisition is something you won't want to miss!
|
The National Conference & Legislative Briefing will begin on Wed. evening, June 19th, and conclude on Friday, June 21st at noon, with additional optional training sessions Friday afternoon.

Important Announcement from SFL
|
You're probably wondering why you've been getting more emails from me and Sustainable Freedom Lab after having had next to none for quite some time.
Well, the truth is that I've been very busy. As always, I spend enormous amounts of my time researching, writing, and speaking to the public about the threats of Agenda 21 and Regionalism.
I've also been working on important projects behind the scenes.
Now I'm finally ready to reveal the first of these "secret" projects: The DVD version of "Stopping Agenda 21 in Your Community".
Like the title suggests, this DVD program offers step-by-step training on how you can fight back against those who would bring Agenda 21 into your community. The test audience who saw this program during the limited streaming we held last Fall felt it was critical viewing for anyone concerned about the erosion of our property rights.
Click here to read my blog post on the SFL website about our first DVD.

If you've been wanting an interesting, clearly written, how-to-manual for identifying and fighting UN Agenda 21, here it is. Agenda 21--All the information you need to understand what is happening in your town, why it's happening, who is behind it, and what you can do to stop it. BEHIND THE GREEN MASK: U.N. Agenda 21 is 172 pages of truth. Part history, part current events, part hand-to-hand combat, and part blueprint for keeping your freedom, this is one book that you'll put to work immediately. Boots on the ground and all hands on deck is the order of the day. Awareness is the first step in the Resistance.
|
Awareness about Agenda 21 is finally spreading throughout the country, due in no small part to your efforts. But knowing it is there isn't enough. Now we need to educate ourselves on how to combat it. That's where you come in.
American Policy Center has recently released a booklet that explains everything you need to know to start fighting back against sustainable programs both locally and nationally. The booklet is called Special Report: Agenda 21 and How to Stop It and is available in the APC store for only $5.95.
I wrote this 35 page booklet in order to give activists a succinct resource they can refer to if they suspect Agenda 21 or Sustainable Development is being implemented in their area. It includes my own research coupled with incredibly helpful graphics created by Carroll County, Maryland Commissioner Richard Rothschild.
In the booklet you will find answers to several roadblocks that grassroots anti-Agenda 21 activists often face, including a definition of property rights and "Resolution to Protect Citizens' Property Rights," which many concerned citizens are already using to tie the hands of power hungry politicians.
This booklet is a great resource for anyone interested in preserving their property rights. It includes all the information to put up a first line of defense and step by step instructions for how to proceed from there. If you face Agenda 21 or Sustainable development in your area or are simply concerned with the national fight this booklet is a must read.

Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.
Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.
If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:
- You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
- I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.
Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.
This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."

Yes, it's true: You can support ACT! for America-at no cost to you! An important message from Guy Rodgers, Executive Director
The next time you make an online purchase of almost anything, you could be helping ACT! for America-at no cost to you. Sound too good to be true? It isn't. All you have to do is sign up for "iGive"-a program that's been around since 1997. The concept is as powerful as it is simple.
Every time an iGive member makes an online purchase at over 1,000 brand-name stores, a percentage of that purchase is donated to that person's charity of choice.
|
And with the holidays just around the corner, you could be helping ACT! for America with every gift you buy! The concept isn't new. In the mid-1990s many supporters of non-profit organizations signed up with long distance telephone programs where a percentage of their bill was donated to their charity of choice. But our investigation of iGive has convinced us that this program has an ease of use and sophistication that we find remarkable.
- Imagine booking a hotel room on Orbitz-and having 1.6% of that purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
- Or buying an Xbox at Best Buy-and having 1.2% of the purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
|
The same goes for buying merchandise at Amazon, Bath and Body Works, Advance Auto Parts, Game Stop, Kmart, Home Depot, Holiday Inn, Old Navy, NASCAR Superstore, Overstock.com, Mattel, J.C. Penney, Office Max, QVC, Radio Shack, Shoe Carnival, Pottery Barn-and on and on the list goes.
|
In other words, every time you make a purchase of merchandise you would buy anyway, you would be financially supporting ACT! for America! All you have to do is log on below and follow the directions to create your account and download the iGive "button." (Note: downloading the "button" is key).
Get Started Here!
When I was first informed of iGive, I was skeptical. I've seen these ideas come and go. Often, they're too good to be true. Or there are all kinds of glitches and problems. So I spent hours researching. I looked at online customer reviews (which were very good). I read all of iGive's fine print, such as Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. I signed up and even emailed two tech support questions to see how good their tech support was.
And the more I dug, the more I liked what I saw. For instance, both of my tech support questions were responded to within 60 minutes. How often does THAT happen?
|
As you know from our Patriot Partner program, we're all about encouraging a lot of people to each do a little-to do something. When everyone does a little, together we accomplish a lot. So consider what could happen.
If just 1% of ACT! for America members each purchased just $400 in merchandise in 2013, from all the available outlets, and the average percentage donated to ACT! was 1.5%, the total amount donated back to ACT! for America would be... ...$15,000. That's a lot of money, wouldn't you agree? And if you were one of those ACT! for America members, it wouldn't cost you one thin dime to help ACT! for America receive $15,000. If this idea really caught on, and eventually 5% of our members made purchases with iGive, that $15,000 could explode to $50,000, $75,000 or more!
|
What's more, that 1.5% figure might be low. Many of the merchants offer percentage donations that are much higher. One printer inkjet company I looked at offered 13%! Every merchant website you visit tells you right at the top what percentage of your purchase price will be donated to ACT! for America. Just think what we could accomplish with an extra $15,000, $50,000 or $75,000 in our fight against radical Islam!
Get Started Here!
One of the things I most wanted to know was their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Check it out for yourself. I confirmed the terms with a company representative. And I like what I learned. As security-conscious as I am, I have no hesitation using the service-and I'm already doing so.
|
I know there are many people out there who would love to support ACT! for America, or give more than they're giving, but in these tough economic times they simply can't. Well, here's a way that everyone who believes in our mission can easily support what we're doing-at no cost to them. It doesn't get any better than that.
There are already chapter leaders who have signed up for the program, and the feedback I have been getting from them has been all positive. They love the idea and many of them are already using it.
|
So please, join me and these ACT! for America chapter leaders who are already signed up and using the iGive service. Yours for a safe and free America

Individuals sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister agenda have infiltrated the Obama Administration.
Brainwashed by the Muslim Students Association and then propelled in to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the David Horowitz Freedom Center tracks the path of Huma Abedin and other Muslim sympathizers who have navigated their way into positions of great influence in the Obama Administration. Everything is revealed in the explosive new Freedom Center pamphlet, "The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration," written by Frank Gaffney, national security expert who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center is committed to educating the public on the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister Agenda. That is why we are giving away this pamphlet for FREE.

Subject: Great Sources of information---Please keep in folder.
From a Fellow Patriot that was kind enough to put this together.
I spoke with someone recently regarding web sites/groups and subscriptions to information/news feeds. This is a listing of many such which may be of use to folks. The number of emails can get overwhelming at times, so check out the sites and see what suits your need. I recommend, though to be sure to subscribe to at least #1 Tea Party Patriots and #2 Americans for Prosperity. Groups/web sites for keeping up on issues, events, etc. 1. Tea Party Patriots (National) http://www.teapartypatriots.org Dot's note ► From this site, you can get to state and local group sites. Basically, this is our "Home page" for information on the national level. Great site to keep up with issues within the "realm" of the Tea Party's core values: Fiscal Responsibility, Free Markets and constitutionally limited Government. They have many citizen journalists who contribute. Also, information on events, etc. From the site: ABOUT TEA PARTY PATRIOTS The Tea Party movement spontaneously formed in 2009 from the reaction of the American people to fiscally irresponsible actions of the federal government, misguided "stimulus" spending, bailouts and takeovers of private industry. Within the first few weeks of the movement, Tea Party Patriots formed to support the millions of Americans seeking to improve our great nation through renewed support for fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free market economic policies. Tea Party Patriots is a national grassroots organization that exists to serve and support the thousands of local organizations and millions of grassroots Patriots throughout our nation. We provide logistical, educational, networking and other support to thousands of community-based tea party groups around the country. Tea Party Patriots state and national coordinators serve your local grassroots groups, support you with the tools and technology you need to address your local issues, listen to your voices, gather your ideas, and together help shape the overall direction of our national movement. Working in a truly grassroots fashion, we have already changed the political landscape of America. TEA PARTY PATRIOTS IS 100% GRASSROOTS, 100% OF THE TIME. Tea Party Patriots is made up of, and funded by, millions of regular Americans just like you, who believe there is a better way forward for America. We are a non-profit 501(c)(4) organization that does not support any political party nor do we endorse candidates. If you support fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free market economic policies, we encourage you to sign up for Tea Party Patriots today. 2. Americans for Prosperity (AFP) http://americansforprosperity.org/ Dot's note ► Great organization, super info. they sponsor/organize many events in the area and DC. Jennifer Stefano is the PA State Director. You've most likely seen her on Fox News Channel. From the web site: OUR MISSIONS Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is committed to educating citizens about economic policy and mobilizing those citizens as advocates in the public policy process. AFP is an organization of grassroots leaders who engage citizens in the name of limited government and free markets on the local, state, and federal levels. AFP grassroots activists advocate for public policies that champion the principles of entrepreneurship and fiscal and regulatory restraint. To that end, AFP supports: Cutting taxes and government spending in order to halt the encroachment of government in the economic lives of citizens by fighting proposed tax increases and pointing out evidence of waste, fraud, and abuse. Removing unnecessary barriers to entrepreneurship and opportunity by sparking citizen involvement early in the regulatory process in order to reduce red tape. Restoring fairness to our judicial system. WHO WE ARE The heart and soul of AFP is our citizen activists. They organize events, write letters to the editor, and petition their lawmakers to uphold freedom and prosperity. Americans for Prosperity has more than 1,800,000 activists in all 50 states and 34 state chapters and affiliates. More than 90,000 Americans in all 50 states have made a financial contribution to AFP or our sister organization, AFP Foundation. WHAT WE DO AFP's network of organized and influential citizen leaders in a growing number of states throughout the country is working to change the nation one state at a time. AFP mobilizes citizens to effectively make their voices heard in public policy issue campaigns. AFP educates citizens about where their elected officials stand on our issues. AFP combines "best-in-class" capabilities built once at the national level with local knowledge from our state staff and on-the-ground grassroots to create economies of scale that win. AFP leverages our comparative advantages with those of other groups by building coalitions of local, state, and national grassroots organizations fighting for a common cause. 3. Freedom Connecter http://connect.freedomworks.org/ Dot's note ► A great site to connect with others. Register, then browse for folks who are near your residence or elsewhere who share your views. I have connections in CA, NY, NC, AL, TX, MO and FL. 4. FreedomWorks for America (FWFA) https://www.freedomworksforamerica.org/ From the web site: FreedomWorks for America (FWFA) is focused on spearheading bottom-up grassroots campaigns on behalf of candidates who will promote economic freedom. Unlike other PACs and organizations, FreedomWorks for America will aggressively support candidates who will defend freedom, even in political primaries against establishment or incumbent Republicans. And instead of spending funds on traditional methods like TV and radio advertisements, our financial resources will primarily be spent mobilizing our over a million-strong volunteer base to promote candidates who are champions of freedom. We are the only group with the grassroots base and the campaign expertise to make a real impact on the ground in races across the country. WHAT WE DO FreedomWorks for America utilizes its over a million-strong grassroots volunteer base to elect candidates who fight for lower taxes, less government, and more freedom. WHY WE DO IT FreedomWorks for America believes individual liberty and the freedom to compete increases consumer choices and provides individuals with the greatest control over what they own and earn. FreedomWorks for America aims to elect real champions of freedom who will stand up for these principles in the face of Washington establishment pressure, and who will be standard bearers for the grassroots to rally behind. HOW WE DO IT FreedomWorks for America's aggressive, real-time campaigns activate a growing and permanent volunteer grassroots army to show up and demand that our elected officials stand up for freedom. Our decentralized approach means that we have the capability to directly impact elections across the country through citizen action on the local level. 5. Constitutional Organization of Liberty (COOL) http://reclaimliberty.com/ Dot's note ► Great educational offerings. Sign up for email. Ruth & I bumped into each other at one of these events: From the web site: Liberty Breakfast The Liberty Breakfast is a new presentation format that allows participants to enjoy a casual meal with other like-minded individuals, and then engage in an interactive review and discussion of a specific topic related to the Constitution, the Founding Fathers or relevant historic documents. (Duration: 2-3 HR) A Project Of The Alexander Hamilton Institute For Constitutional Studies Education is the critical service that COOL provides to participants in order to develop a more well rounded understanding of the documents critical to the founding of this nation. Currently, COOL offers a variety of different fee-based courses and is constantly seeking out new material for presentation. Mark Thomas, Chairman, P.O. Governor Tom Corbett is planning to meet with the Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to discuss expanding the entitlement program Medicaid as a part of ObamaCare.
This is terrible news.
So far, Gov. Corbett has been a principled opponent of the President's health care scheme. But he now appears to be wavering on the Medicaid expansion.
Click here to call Governor Corbett and tell him NOT to expand Medicaid.
All around the state, lobbying groups are pressuring the Governor to give in to expanding an already costly entitlement. Why? They want more of your money of course!
Governor Corbett needs to know that you support his decision to not make Pennsylvania liable for Washington's mandate. We can't let special interests dictate how Pennsylvanians get their health care. Gov. Corbett is standing strong now but it may not be for long.
Click here to call Governor Corbett and thank him for standing strong against ObamaCare's Medicaid expansion.

Chicken Little, Sequester Edition
March 1, 2013
"Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm." --James Madison, Federalist No. 10
We're publishing today from a secure bunker in an undisclosed location so as to avoid the fallout from the apocalypse known as the sequester. Today, the $85 billion in federal spending "cuts" take effect now that the Senate failed to pass either Democrat or Republican alternatives yesterday. The devastation is unthinkable -- unable to afford plane trips home to Delaware, Joe Biden will even begin taking the train again. We just pray the nation survives.
All kidding aside, the sequester does, in fact, involve real pain for real people. Barack Obama is ensuring that layoffs, furloughs, pay cuts and the like are as widespread and as painful as possible, all in an effort to defeat his political opponents and extract even greater tax hikes out of them. He even released hundreds of detained illegal aliens, and then blamed his Department of Homeland Security for doing it without his knowledge. DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano also blamed underlings. Obama also warned that cuts will affect an agency that no longer exists. And the sequester is a "manufactured crisis" the White House blames for delaying its own budget submission, due Feb. 4.
But just remember who manufactured it to begin with -- Barack Obama. He will continue the charade to ensure that the maximum damage is done from the "Republican Sequester."
As we go to press, the president is meeting with Republican leaders John Boehner and Mitch McConnell, presumably to rhetorically abuse them in private before he does so again in public. To show how serious Obama is at replacing sequestration, or even just better managing it, the White House threatened a veto of a GOP offer to let the president have even more authority to selectively implement the sequester. Senate Democrats were happy to kill the bill for him.
For his own political gain Obama needs the sequester to be a blunt object that causes as much pain as possible. Besides, it's a win-win for him. Now he can tell the affected people, "I feel your pain," all while blaming Republicans. If the GOP caved, spending would have continued to grow out of control, just like he wants. For that matter, it will still grow out of control, just at an imperceptibly slower pace. In reality, the spending "cuts" for FY2013 amount to just $43 billion.

Defunding ObamaCare
ObamaCare is now the law of the land and has been deemed constitutional by our Supreme Court. These are the facts, whether we like them or not.
There is a last line of defense that can be used to stop the implementation of ObamaCare and that is by defunding it before it is too late.
The current continuing resolution (CR) funding the government expires on March 27, setting up an opportunity for Congress and President Obama to honor the bi-partisan sequester savings already agreed upon. It also presents an opportunity to achieve even more savings by defunding and stopping the implementation of ObamaCare which the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) recently reported will force 7 million Americans out of their existing health insurance.
Heritage Action has provided a detailed description of the proposed process to defund ObamaCare using this process and needs our help to convince our GOP Congressmen to get on board with this proposal.
Many of us worked hard to ensure victories for the thirteen (13) newly elected Republican Congressmen from Pennsylvania on the promise from each of them to stop ObamaCare and this CR is one of the last chances they have to do so. Let's hold their feet to the fire and request them to use the continuing resolution process to defund ObamaCare.
When the House considers the next CR, they should demand that all funding for the implementation of these exchanges be rescinded and instead used to pay down the deficit. At the very least, the GOP Leadership and the Rules Committee should allow an amendment to defund the exchanges in the CR to be brought to the Floor, so that every member of the House can record their position on the repeal of ObamaCare, the most pressing and important domestic policy issue of our generation.

RedState Morning Briefing
For March 4, 2013
1. Defund Obamacare Now!
House Republicans plan to bring a Continuing Resolution to the floor, which will fund the federal government for the rest of the fiscal year. If nothing is done to stop them, GOP leaders plan to put forth a clean CR that funds Obamacare. This is unacceptable.
With health insurance premiums skyrocketing, employers dumping workers from health plans, and new reports predicting trillions in new debt as a result of Obamacare, we must defund this behemoth before it fully takes effect next year. Many of the new members pledged to defund Obamacare, yet they have dithered for two years in the hopes that it would be struck down by the Supreme Court or that Republicans would win the White House. In fact, 105 current members of the House GOP Conference signed a letter last August committing to defund Obamacare. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
2. Colorado Senate Meeting to Restrict 2nd Amendment TODAY
Colorado Democrats have gone too far, and the time to stop them is now. On Monday morning the Colorado Senate will take up a package of anti-second amendment measures, four of which have already been passed in the House.
It is time for conservatives to take a stand against this assault on our rights.
The Democrats in Colorado control both chambers of the legislature and the Governor's office. They assume that this gives them the right to subvert your constitutional rights. They seek to limit your capability to defend yourself by banning concealed carry on campuses and limiting the capacity of magazines. They intend to make it more difficult to procure a firearm through an expansion of background checks and increased fees, read taxes, on the same.
Senate President John Morse has gone so far as to introduce legislation which blatantly contradicts federal law. Morse, with no regard for the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, intends to make gun owners, sellers, and manufacturers liable for any damages that occur from the discharge of a weapon they owned, sold, or produced.
So what can you do?
Michael Brown, a talk radio host in the Denver area, is calling on the people of Colorado to show up en masse at the State Capitol TODAY and then do two things when you get there. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
3. Texas House Republicans Meet TODAY to Plot Cave on Obamacare
Governor Rick Perry is solid on the issue, but if enough members of the Texas legislature disagree with him, they could override him.
The ring leader is apparently State Rep. Lois Kolkhorst, along with Representative John Zerwas.
If you live in Texas, go to the RedState Action Center RIGHT NOW and email members of the Texas State House of Representatives. Tell them to oppose the Medicaid expansion. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
4. Missouri State Senators Mike Parson and Tom Dempsey Begin Obamacare Sellout
Missouri State Senators Mike Parson and Tom Dempsey are working toward a cave on Obamacare as best they can in Missouri.
Senator Parson has filed SB 456, a "shell" of legislation into which multiple sources in and around the Missouri legislator expect they'll put an expansion of Medicaid.
Over 70% of Missourians voted to oppose implementation of Obamacare in a ballot initiative, but several people I've spoken to said this legislation would act as an end run around the will of the people and be focused on Medicaid, without focusing on state exchanges, mandates, etc.
The result would still be the same.
The Missouri Senate President has handpicked a committee to look at expansion of Medicaid in Missouri and Speaker Timothy Jones has set up a working group. All these acts are happening in unison and many are fearful there'll be a coordinated rush to push through Medicaid expansion before voters can rally.
If you live in Missouri, go to the RedState Action Center right now and take action to stop the legislature from expanding Medicaid.

Obama Fulfills DeMint's Prediction, Blaming Sequester for Future Economic Problems
The Foundry | Amy Payne | March 1, 2013 at 12:59 pm
Senator Jim DeMint, the president-elect of The Heritage Foundation, apparently has a crystal ball. This morning he predicted that Obama would use the sequester as a smokescreen:
So why is President Obama leading a scare campaign filled with untruths about how sequestration will necessitate firing firefighters, cops, and teachers? I'll tell you why. Because liberals know the Obama tax hikes forced through in January will really hurt the economy. It's preemptive damage control. The President is trying to blame the sequester for the economic problems his tax hikes will spawn.
Just a few hours later, in a press conference, President Obama said:

SUBJ: S. Res 65, just introduced by Senator Graham
|
|
|
With President Obama scheduled to visit Israel later this month and diplomatic discussions with Iran intensifying - and as the Tehran regime moves ever closer to its objective of obtaining nuclear weapons capability - this is a critical moment for Israel's security.
In response, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham introduced S. Res. 65, a bipartisan measure that would put the U.S. Senate on record in support of our key regional ally - in a clear and forthright way.
After detailing the most important milestones in the history of the U.S.-Israel alliance, S. Res. 65 puts the U.S. Senate on record as:
- strongly condemning the numerous threats against Israel that high-ranking Iranian officials have made,
- acknowledging the grave threat posed to the United States, the West, and Israel by the Government of Iran's continuing pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability,
- reiterating that the policy of the United States is to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, capability and to take such action as may be necessary to implement this policy,
- recognizing that the United States has a vital national interest in ensuring the security of the State of Israel, and
- urging that, if the Government of Israel is compelled to take military action in self-defense, the United States Government should stand with Israel by providing necessary diplomatic, military, and economic support.
At a press conference announcing this bipartisan measure, Senator Graham made it clear that the firm and explicit pledges contained in S. Res. 65 are intended to assure that the oft-heard promise that America "has Israel's back" as it confronts Iran is a promise that will be kept.
TAKE ACTION
Call your U.S. Senators and urge them to cosponsor S. Res. 65 if they have not done so already. As of today, 21 Senators have cosponsored Senator Graham's resolution; You can find a list here.

March 1, 2013 Competition Needed for Al JazeeraJanSuzanne Krasner
Vice President Al Gore's sellout of Current TV to Qatar's Al Jazeera is going to bring this Middle Eastern news giant into American homes, but it will be information 'nuanced' for the American public's consumption. This state owned network was the media of choice for Osama Bin Laden, and continues to be the resources for Hamas and Hezbollah.
It seems that this single Middle Eastern offering for 40 million American cable subscribers needs some competition that will show Americans what Muslims in the Middle East (and maybe in a local mosque) are listening to without the 'nuances.' One suggestion is the MEMRI TV Project One, an organization that monitors over 100 Arabic and Farsi TV channels round the clock.
Watch a recent 1:41 minute video picked up by MEMRI that is truly an "eye-opener." It is embedded below. The speaker is the Egyptian Cleric Abu Islam as he appeared on February 13, 2013 on Egypt's Al-Omma TV in a "Swear to God the Almighty, I am not lying" speech on the emergence of Christianity from penis worship.
Cleric Abu Islam tells the viewers "that the Church worship originated in worship of the penis. This is documented in dozens of pictures. Let me tell you something...it's indecent, but true. Take a look at a picture of Jesus and you'll see a penis, right there (he strokes his right side)...Or is it on this side? (He points to his left side and back to the right side) Oh, it's the right side...A penis, right here. There are many pictures like this. They worship it."
The Cleric continues with claims about Christian women: "(Christian women) raise cats and dogs as a substitute for husbands. They train their dogs to play the husband. I swear to God, I am not lying. They buy dogs for this purpose. They train dogs to play the husband of them. Christian women do that."
Watch this short video to see how followers of Islam are propagandized against Christians, not only Jews.

DENIAL IS CONFIRMATION Politicians often seem to deny that one quality about them that everyone knows is true. Obama's "I Am Not a Dictator" deserves to join "I Am Not a Crook" in the annals of political denials. Obama is finding a dozen different ways to say that he doesn't wield absolute power. "I am not a dictator". "I can't mind-meld Congress into making a deal." "Even though I have been doing anything I want with respect to everything else, when it comes to the sequester I can't take control of it, even though the Senate has offered me that opportunity." I am not a dictator, except when I want to be. CHOPPING THE BRANCHES WILL NOT CHOP DOWN THE TREE Terrorism can never be defeated by fighting terrorists. Combine massive wealth in some parts of the Middle East with staggering poverty in other parts and the supply of mercenaries is nearly endless. Syrian Jihadists are being paid $150 a month by Qatar; a good salary for an unskilled laborer in a region where life is cheap and every family has plenty of surplus sons and mouths to feed. A barrel of oil can buy the services of a killer for a month and Qatar pumps out millions of barrels a day.
Terrorism is cheap for the sponsors, profitable for the participants and hideously expensive for the targets. A soldier in a First World nation can cost six figures. For that same amount, a backward oil tyranny can field a hundred men. When those hundred men kill a soldier, then his nation will be heartbroken and question the costs of war. When those hundred men die, their mothers will ceremonially wail and cry out for more martyrs to avenge them. And the terror will go on.
Islam makes the process easier. Like Palestinian nationalism, it is a war machine whose ideas lubricate the recruitment, rampages and replenishment of fresh cannon fodder for the wars of the old rich men of the region. from my article this week, Terrorism Without EndAGENDA IS EVERYTHING, PROCESS IS NOTHING

Regardless of how many wars on poverty are declared and how often calls are issued to make the rich pay their fair share, neither the rich nor the poor will be going anywhere anytime soon. The question is what forces will keep the poor impoverished and where the rich will derive their wealth from. The founder of Subway recently said that he could not have started up his company today. Similar messages have come from the founders and heads of other major companies. That isn't to say that companies will cease to exist. What we think of as business has been changing for some time. In most countries, starting a business does not begin with a great idea. It begins with connections. Knowing the right people is still important, but in most places it's the most important thing. Under the current American model, a company becomes successful and then begins to lobby Washington to gain a competitive advantage or to avert hostile lobbying directed at negating its existing competitive advantage. That is a perversion of free enterprise, but in much of the world companies begin lobbying first and then become successful. This is the model that has evolved under Obama. And it's a familiar model to anyone doing business in Russia or China. Political connections come first and then the business becomes feasible. Oligarchy is the inevitable outcome of an economic climate where the governments acts as a gatekeeper to the country's customers. Measures that began as limited safety and fraud regulations have become a comprehensive political economic system that controls every aspect of every economic transaction. The government creates markets. It creates companies and customers. It sets prices and taxes industries that it does not favor out of business. Corporate lobbying isn't just about the proverbial 200 dollar screwdriver. It's about making it more expensive for some companies to make screwdrivers than others. It's also about forcing independent screwdriver manufacturers out of business. It's about government grants to make environmentally friendly screwdrivers and heavy taxes on companies that don't make environmentally friendly screwdrivers. Tactics like these aren't new.

Obama's Sequester Smokescreen
By Jim DeMint
Suppose you desperately needed to lose weight but had a Big Mac with fries and a Coke staring you in the face. You could take your need to diet seriously and say, "No thanks, I'll have a salad." Or you could decide to reduce the Big Mac meal by 2 percent - pushing aside a couple French fries and gobbling up the rest.
If you took Option B, how do you think that "diet" would work out for you? Well, that, my friends, is the tale of the sequester that hit us this morning.
For the past few days the White House, with a big assist from sympathetic media, has done all within its considerable powers to make it seem like sequestration means the end of the world. If all you've heard is their side, you might be forgiven for thinking that the Mayans were right after all - just off by a couple of months on their prediction of the apocalypse.
This political panic needs a little common sense. In the last decade, federal spending has exploded from a $2 trillion budget in 2002 to a $3.5 trillion budget in 2012 - a 75 percent increase. Over the next 10 years, the budget is projected to grow another 69 percent to $6 trillion. The sequester barely taps the brakes on this runaway spending, still allowing a 67 percent increase over the next 10 years. Too much to ask of Washington?
"Sequester" is an awkward word for automatic spending reductions that were decided during negotiations for the 2011 debt ceiling deal, and it is problematic. The reductions leave the largest part of federal spending - entitlements - virtually untouched while deeply cutting into defense priorities. This compromises national security by undermining military readiness and capabilities, while doing nothing to make defense more efficient and effective. This is a poor substitute for real budgeting. The President and Congress have had a year and a half to come up with a smarter way to reduce spending, and they have failed.
But you must remember that we live in a world where Harry Reid's Senate has not passed a budget in 1,402 days. The sequester is a symptom of Washington's fiscal cluelessness.
Yet, recall why we are having this conversation in the first place. We're facing a serious debt crisis that has already led to America's credit rating being downgraded. It is driven by these massive spending increases - resulting in even more debt - which, if left unresolved, will cripple our children's future with higher interest rates, inflation, and even fewer jobs. It's time to put our nation on the path to a balanced budget within the next 10 years.
But our struggling economy is the President's own creation. His tax hikes - in income taxes, payroll taxes, and Obamacare taxes - will take $150 billion out of the economy this year alone. The $150 billion doesn't magically appear in Washington's bank account without real consequences. It comes out of your paycheck. It means less money for your boss to give you a raise. Small businesses won't have the money to hire new employees. You'll have less money to save for your retirement or your child's college fund.
The impact of the tax hikes on the economy is nearly twice as big as the impact of sequestration. Over 10 years, Obama's tax hikes will suck $2.9 trillion out of the economy.
Excess taxation hurts working families, but cutting government spending helps spur jobs and economic growth. As Heritage economist J.D. Foster has explained, reducing the rate of spending growth "may even provide a modest short-term lift while improving the economy's performance in future years."
Washington has a problem with spending and debt. It needs immediate action. A paper by Heritage researcher Romina Boccia pointed out just last month that U.S. publicly held debt, not even counting state and local government debt, will exceed 76 percent of GDP this year, and chronic deficits are projected to push U.S. debt to 87 percent of the economy in 10 years. Recent economic research confirms that "federal debt at such high levels puts the United States at risk for a number of harmful economic consequences, including slower economic growth, a weakened ability to respond to unexpected challenges, and quite possibly a debt-driven financial crisis."
These are the real consequences of Obamanomics. The President's spending spree is the real problem. His trillion-dollar deficits mean that we can't just skip a couple of fries - we have to put government on a true spending diet. Our children's future is too important to wait any longer.
Former Senator Jim DeMint is president-elect of The Heritage Foundation.

In Memoriam--Tribute to Andrew Breitbart: I Can't Stand to Say Goodbye (Original Song) |
|
by John Ondrasik
I see Andrew every day. When I fire up my buddy list there is Bodiaz bringing his dose of happy-sad. Thanks, someone, for not turning his computer off.
On the one-year anniversary of his death, many folks will speak of Andrew's loss to the cause. Go ahead and cube that vacuum a few times. It's true, in some measure he lives on in all of us. When I was out campaigning for Romney last year, all my tough decisions were decided by a simple What Would Andrew Do?

Barack Obama is a Marxist. And like all good Marxists, he wants to disarm the public. It's not like it hasn't been done before. Senator Menendez likes his hookers young and new to the trade
Mar 03, 2013 05:13 am | Coach Collins
by George Spelvin
"That senator likes the youngest and newest girls," said a young Dominican Republic hooker as she described in detail what allegedly went on at sex parties involving Miami ophthalmologist and high-dollar campaign donor Salmon Melgen and New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez. Of course Menendez is denying everything, something not difficult to do with the majority of the mainstream media covering up for the liberal democrat.
When she heard the code word "chocolate," a young sex worker said she and other females knew they were being summoned to various homes. She even preserved the phone number from which the "chocolate" summons came. (1) But she now fears something may happen to her, saying "if they know that I spoke with someone; they will find me." Another young underage female claims she "had sex with Menendez three times at least in 2009," and that she remembers the June visit well because her 17th birthday was in ... Osama bin Laden a "surprise witness" against Wikileaks defendant Bradley Manning Mar 02, 2013 05:13 am | Coach Collins by Jim Emerson, staff writer The raid on bin Laden's hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan, netted more than the death of bin laden. SEAL teams members in the compound collected hard drives and other electronic media regarding al-Qaida activities and connections. During the analysis of that media, Intelligence analysts found that bin laden had files which were downloaded from WikiLeaks, that is, the information stolen by Pfc Manning was in the hands of al-Qaida. Apparently, Bradley Manning "knowingly gave intelligence to the enemy through indirect means". (1) Army prosecutors are planning to use one of the SEALs to testify at Manning's court-martial. The evidence will show that bin Laden asked for and received WikiLeaks files. The Prosecution will also call additional witnesses to testify how the leaked information may have resulted in "injury and death to individuals" and may have been used to influence enemy capability and activity in several countries. The amount of damage Manning has done is unknown ... Continue Reading:Osama bin Laden a "surprise witness" against Wikileaks defendant Bradley Manning comments | read more
Like child molesters and drug addicts liberals can NEVER be cured of their lusts Mar 01, 2013 05:13 am | Coach Collins By Derrick Hollenbeck, staff writer Like child molesters and drug addicts, liberals can't be cured of their addiction. They want to run our lives in every way possible. New York City's Mayor Nanny Bloomberg is one such liberal. He won election twelve years ago by pretending to be another Rudy Giuliani. But even though he knew he was legally limited to two terms Nanny's liberal lust for power was ultimately just as strong as a fish eyed child molester's lust for gratification. Nanny got the also term limited City Council to say, "Oops the people made a mistake and as their friends we'll fix it for them - there term limits - are all gone!" An emboldened Nanny and friends have since prohibited smoking in public parks and beaches, changed the lunch menus in schools to "healthy portions of salad" that nobody eats and set their sights on lowering the salt intake of their subjects by 25%. Nevertheless, ... Continue Reading:Like child molesters and drug addicts liberals can NEVER be cured of their lusts comments | read more |
Friday, March 1, 2013 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer Good news! Yes, I said good news. What is it? It is sequestration day and the world has not ended! Obama "Evolves" Again Barack Obama's evolving position on same-sex "marriage" has taken yet another turn. It has been a long and twisted path in which Obama has repeatedly deceived the American people. In 2008, during a debate at Saddleback Church, Obama told Pastor Rick Warren, "I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman." Of course, that was a lie. Many years before, in 1996, Obama said that he supported the radical idea of men "marrying" other men. As he was gearing up for the reelection campaign last year, he changed again and came out in support of same-sex "marriage," telling ABC News, "I've been going through an evolution on this issue." But he added:
"I have to tell you that part of my hesitation on this has also been I didn't want to nationalize the issue. ...And what you're seeing is, I think, states working through this issue ... all across the country. Different communities are arriving at different conclusions, at different times. And I think that's a healthy process and a healthy debate. And I continue to believe that this is an issue that is gonna be worked out at the local level, because historically, this has not been a federal issue."
So, while he supported same-sex "marriage," he was willing to let the states decide the issue for themselves. Evidently in the past seven months since he made that statement, Obama has evolved yet again. Last night the White House filed a brief demanding the Supreme Court strike down Proposition 8 -- California's voter-approved constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The militant homosexual rights movement is cheering today. As one activist put it, "If the court accepts the reasoning that the White House has put forward every state's anti-gay-marriage amendment will fall quickly. Make no mistake about it, the brief is a very bold endorsement of [same-sex marriage]." Evidently, Mr. Obama now wants to federalize the issue and force same-sex "marriage" on every state in the union. March For Marriage On March 26th the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case seeking to overturn Proposition 8. It is infuriating that we have arrived at this juncture. Since judicial activists first tried to redefine marriage in the 1990s, the voters of 31 states have approved constitutional amendments preserving the definition of normal marriage. But just as it did with abortion, when the left used the Supreme Court to impose its morality on the people, it is once again hoping that the high court will invalidate the will of millions of Americans in states all across the country. You and I may not have a vote in the Supreme Court, but we can still make our voice heard! Join me in our nation's capital on Tuesday, March 26th for the March for Marriage. I am proud to co-sponsor the March for Marriage along with the National Organization for Marriage and other pro-family organizations. Please share this report with like-minded friends, family members and fellow worshippers, and encourage them to attend. Visit MarriageMarch.org for handouts, talking points and more information. I look forward to seeing you there! The Bible Tune in to the History Channel this Sunday, March 3rd, at 9:00 PM ET to watch the series premiere of "The Bible." The series is produced by Mark Burnett and his wife Roma Downey. Downey starred in the CBS series "Touched By An Angel" and Burnett has produced hit reality shows such as "The Apprentice," "Survivor" and "The Voice." Both say this is the most important project they ever done. They told Fox News that they hope the series will combat "biblical illiteracy." Asked why he took on this project, Mark Burnett explained:
"The Bible is most-read book of all time. It has touched the lives of billions of people across the planet and has significantly shaped history, culture, literature, art, politics and human behavior -- and continues to shape the world we live in today."
Downey added, "Our prayer is that the dramatization of these stories will drive viewers to go to the Bible itself and drink in the actual text, because it is a book that changes lives." Indeed! And many Christian leaders are embracing the series. Pastor Rick Warren's Saddleback Church is using the series as a small group discipleship tool. Here are some quotes from evangelical and Catholic leaders endorsing the show:
"The Bible, the made-for-TV video, seeks to introduce a new generation to the Bible, the great book of the works of God. It does so with great passion, exquisite skill and cinemagraphic triumph." -- Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington "I'm convinced that The Bible represents a unique opportunity to convey God's redemptive message to a broad audience -- many of whom may be unfamiliar with the narrative of Scripture." -- Jim Daly, President, Focus on the Family "The Bible Series is powerful beyond words. ... As president of Parents Television Council I spend much of my time criticizing the ubiquitous flow of graphic and gratuitous sex and violence and profanity in entertainment... It is gratifying to see industry leaders working to give families something so positive, uplifting, inspiring, educational and entertaining." -- Timothy F. Winter, President, Parents Television Council
The 10-part series, from Genesis through Revelations, begins this Sunday and runs through Easter. You can learn more at bibleseries.tv.

Tears for Piers

(Paul Mirengoff)
What's more fun than watching Tottenham Hotspur defeat Arsenal in the North London Derby, causing Arsenal to drop to within two points of Everton in the battle for fifth place in the EPL? Lot's of things, actually, and of them is watching this happen in front of Arsenal fan Piers Morgan, the insufferable CNN talk show host.
I've seen Morgan on Fox pre-game shows before. On those occasions, he limited himself to incorrectly predicting the outcome of the match.
Today, though, Morgan decided to rant non-stop against Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager. Wenger is one of the great soccer minds of his generation. Taking over at Arsenal in 1996, he transformed the club into one of Europe's best and a perennial contender, with Manchester United, for the EPL crown, which his Arsenal teams have won three times.
In recent years, Arsenal hasn't sustained a strong title bid. However, the club has remained in the EPL's top four, thus qualifying every season for the prestigious and ultra-lucrative Champions League.
Morgan wants Wenger out because he doesn't think the top four is good enough for Arsenal. But it isn't Wegner's fault that Manchester City and Chelsea have surpassed his club. These two teams are rolling in foreign money, and Arsenal lacks the resources to keep up. Blaming Wenger because Arsenal is on the fringe of the top floor is like blaming David Moyes for Everton's status on the fringe of the top six - in other words, ludicrous.
Morgan whined that Wenger keeps selling his top players. He cited Robin Van Persie and, especially, Cesc Fabregas. But Wenger ddn't sell Fabregas because he thinks Mikel Arteta (ex-Everton) approaches Fabregas in quality. Fabregas was determined to return to Spain to play for Barcelona, and Arteta was a decent, available replacement Arsenal could afford.
No manager could have kept Fabregas in North London. But Wenger, in a brilliant acquisition, has now brought in Santi Cazorla to fill the creativity void. Cazorla is arguably the best play making midfielder in the EPL this season.
As for Van Persie, he succumbed, like so many others, to the lure of Manchester United. Morgan notes that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson also faces limitations on spending. But Fergie's constraints aren't as severe. Nonetheless, if Sir Alex will take the Arsenal job, then by all means, Wenger must go. Otherwise, Morgan should attempt a more nuanced analysis of his club's managerial situation.
Morgan also opined that Wenger has opted for players who are too small. A more cogent complaint would be that the team's defenders are too ponderous. But we should no more expect cogency from Morgan than from the guy who calls your local sports radio station at 3:00 a.m. to vent.
When not attacking Wenger, Morgan was offering helpful advice on how Arsenal should play Spurs. They need to stop Gareth Bale, he warned. As Bale is probably hottest footballer in Europe right now (with the possibile exception of Barcelona's Lionel Messi), Morgan's counsel was akin to telling the Green Back Packers to watch out for Adrian Peterson.
Morgan also took pains to let us know how many season tickets he has. In addition, he disclosed that he knows Wenger personally. If he's this close to the situation, why is his analysis is so pedestrian?
By half time, delicously, Spurs were ahead 2-0. Morgan looked as if Larry Pratt had replaced Warren Barton in the Fox studio. He attacked the Arsenal defense for "running away" from Bale when he scored the first goal. Actually, Arsenal had tried to pull the off-sides trap. That device isn't fool proof, but neither is standing next to a player like Bale hoping you can keep up with him when he elects to make his run. The real problem, as Barton noted, was the lack of pressure on the ball.
The match ended 2-1 to Spurs. By now Morgan looked like Ben Shapiro had replaced him at CNN. With the veins in his neck bulging, the talk show host continued his Wenger must go rant.
But Morgan is a humane man. He wouldn't like to see Arsenal sack its long-time gaffer. Instead, Morgan intoned, Wenger should look at himself in the mirror and admit he's no longer the man for the Arsenal job.
Here's a better idea. Morgan should look at himself in the mirror and admit he never was the man for Larry King's job.
That won't happen, of course. But we can at least hope that Fox Soccer Channel will conclude that this whining celeb doesn't belong in its studio.

Psalm 23, newly revised
Posted: 03 Mar 2013 02:50 PM PST
(Scott Johnson)
Last week we posted Claremont Institute senior fellow Mark Helprin's interview with Claremont Review of Books editor Charles Kesler here. Now comes the sardonic Mr. Helprin with "Psalm 23, newly revised according to modern principles." In the fifth year of our Lord and Master Barack Obama, let us pray:
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of debt, I fear no bankruptcy, for Obama is my shepherd. He prepareth a table of food stamps before me, and maketh me lie down beside waters He hath cleansed and seas He hath made recede, even though the bad Republicans wisheth the earth to be burnt unto a cinder, and will not buy the electric car that is good, for it hath zero emissions, and receiveth its power from a power plant, which hath not zero emissions, but the ways of the President are mysterious.
He hath told the stubborn Israelites, evil builders of apartments, that they know not their own interests and He does, and know not what they do, when they fear the nuclear weapon of the Persians. The ways of the President are mysterious. He alloweth the Persians to get the nuclear weapon (unless He hath something up His sleeve), for He knoweth that when they behold Him they will stay their hand, and not burn the Israelites unto a cinder, as they pronounce.
Yea, though Bernanke maketh funny money that will not compute, Obama prepareth a statistical table in front of the bad Republicans that showeth it will, if only they have faith. Fear not the Hellenes and the path they have trod. Though for sure we shall follow them, the President will be our sword, and our shield. His Hillary Rodham and his staff, they comfort us.
Fear not the Chinois, whose power waxes as ours wanes, for someday thy children's children shall journey over the sea that Obama hath made recede, west of the land of Geffen and Famous Amos, to build railroads for Beijing. Then the Third World will have inherited the earth, and the strong will have been laid low, which is good, and which is also the Democratic platform.
Verily, we should be like the meek of the earth, and follow the commands of the President, the Amalekites, the EPA, and the IRS, which taketh our money, which is good, for we know not what to do with it. And Obama does, for you did not buildeth that. Once, we were slaves in the land of Reagan (and if you attributeth the "Reagan" deficits to increased military spending and lowered tax rates, tryeth accounting for the changes in military expenditure and tax revenues in the Reagan years, for, lo, when combined they yieldeth a surplus). Then, we were sinners, in spending our own money for what we thought was our own good. But now we are free, for the President spendeth it for us, and He maketh miracles, for, lo, He roasteth invisible chickens, and, lo, He spendeth money that existeth not, that Bernanke printeth. And, lo, it buys us stuff, for now.
Yea, though I accumulate debt higher than the mountains of Gilboa, and the deadbeats skip like rams, I shall not want, for Bernanke maketh funny money, and the President smiles upon the land, but not upon the bad Republicans. For they wisheth to live within their means, which surely must be evil. And what would you expect from people who are suspicious of Social Security? And wisheth to burn the earth unto a cinder.
But arithmetic notwithstanding, I will dwell in the house of Obama all the days of my life. (Why not four terms, and what about Michelle? For the Constitution liveth.) And, the earth having been purified, surely it will be good when-and where do I apply for-government assistance will be the only thing left.
Amen.

Conservatives, Anti-Intellectualism, and Harvard, Oh My!
Posted: 03 Mar 2013 02:49 PM PST
(Steven Hayward)
Well what the heck, we may as well make this a Power Line symposium, like Commentary does from time to time. Paul and John's posts are right down my alley just at this moment, as I've been in the throes of the University of Colorado business for the last several weeks. (Concerning which, see the Wall Street Journal's Jason Riley and James Freeman discuss the issue-and mention me-in this video; I'm avoiding public comment about the whole thing right now, but I'll break media silence briefly to say that I agree with virtually every syllable of what Jason says here-especially his comment about Thomas Sowell's philosophy of classroom teaching, which I fully share.)
A few observations: Paul is right to defend Ted Cruz about Harvard Law School, which in the late 1980s and early 1990s became almost wholly captured by the "Critical Legal Studies" fad (that would have been at the tail end of Obama's time there, incidentally). CLS is just Frankfurt Marxism wrapped in a legal brief, and on some other occasion perhaps I'll go off on the "Frankfurters," as I like to call them. (Meaning, yes, they're all a bunch of dicks.) Things were so bad at Harvard Law in those days that it was typical for students who expressed non-liberal points of view in class to be hissed or booed openly-and the faculty did nothing to put a stop to this atmosphere. Even Elena Kagan (now Justice Kagan, and obviously no conservative), when she became dean, could see that Harvard had swung too monolithically to the left, and she made a special effort to hire conservative law professors to bring some balance back to Harvard Law. (And no one called it "affirmative action" for conservatives, I should note.)
Second, while the problem of leftist indoctrination does occur, it happens more often in the fringy, ethnic- and gender-studies programs more than in the mainstream humanities courses. (Both the political science and history departments at the University of Colorado never wanted anything to do with Ward Churchill, it bears noting.) And I also think blatant indoctrination occurs more at smaller, private liberal arts colleges than in the main departments at larger universities, especially the large public research universities like Colorado, Berkeley, etc. Harvard, Yale, and Princeton are somewhere in between the large public research universities and traditional liberal arts colleges I think, which makes their cases even harder to judge. But at all of those three, I can point to a number of solid professors, not necessarily conservatives, worth studying with. For a long time Harvard's government department featured not just Harvey Mansfield, but Sam Huntington, James Q. Wilson, Ed Banfield, and Sam Beer. Today I'd unhesitatingly recommend Michael Sandel and Robert Putnam, as their liberalism is serious and thoughtful, and their courses, as far as I can tell, are conducted in the best tradition of non-indoctrinating liberal education. At Yale, Steven Smith, John Lewis Gaddis (actually a registered Republican I think!), and Donald Kagan come quickly to mind. Princeton has Robby George, Aaron Friedberg, and I have considerable regard for Sean Wilenz (definitely a liberal).
Paradoxically, it is at private liberal arts universities where you typically find many more (though scattered) conservative professors than you do at the large research universities, so the radicalism of many classrooms is offset by these oases of sense. And conservative professors are usually very popular with students for reasons I'll discuss some other time, though this will be implicit in the serial descriptions of the new Power Line 100 Best Professors series. But there are few such oases in the large research universities. Jim Ceaser at Virginia is about the only person who comes quickly to mind. The reasons for the near total absence of conservatives at large public research universities may have more to do with some of the defects (in my opinion) of the methodological narrowness of the public research university today than it does blatant hiring bias, though even once you factor in self-selection factors (i.e. few conservatives want to teach in the humanities in research universities), then the bubble effect of like-minded liberalism among the faculty reinforces this tendency in subsequent hiring cycles. But beyond just the hiring controversy, I think the narrower specialization and methodological exactitude of research universities may be a more significant problem than blatant classroom bias. Many more thoughts on this in due course.
Above all, as I often like to say, I'm happy to match conservative intellect against the too often unchallenged and therefore lazily self-satisfied campus liberal opinion. I never start to get concerned about the odds until the panels are stacked at least four to one against me; any ratio lower than that I consider unsporting to the liberals. This is a tiny part of what I had in mind with my recent post here about my non-use of the term "normative."
Okay Scott, your turn.

Is the right's critique of Harvard anti-intellectual?
Posted: 03 Mar 2013 12:56 PM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
I agree with John's contention, sparked by an editorial in the Harvard Crimson, that populist anti-intellectualism isn't a wise approach for conservatives to adopt. But I want to add that the editorial in question doesn't show that the conservative critique of Harvard rests on populist anti-intellectualism.
The Crimson cites three conservative "attacks" on Harvard. The first came from Ted Cruz, who complained that, during his time at Harvard Law School, the faculty contained a sizeable number of Marxist professors. This beef isn't anti-intellectual. There is no inconsistency between intellectualism and the belief that a law school faculty shouldn't include many Marxists.
The Crimson sniffs that "education gives people new ideas that they might not have otherwise had." But even assuming that Marxism is a new idea that won't have occurred to law students during their undergraduate years, one or two Marxist law school faculty members would be sufficient for that purpose. And the Crimson makes no mention of Cruz's complaint that, in his time, the Harvard Law School faculty was nearly devoid of openly conservative professors.
Bill O'Reilly is the second conservative purveyor of anti-intellectualism identified by the Crimson. O'Reilly was unhappy that his alma mater accepted something called Harvard College Munch, a group for students who share an interest in kinky sex. But there is nothing anti-intellectual about O'Reilly's displeasure. Intellectuals can and do take either side in the debate over whether a college should accept or sponsor groups that promote off-beat sex.
The Crimson's last example is Mitt Romney. During the presidential campaign, he criticized President Obama for having spent "too much time at Harvard." Since Romney spent more time at Harvard than Obama, I hope that Romney made this comment with tongue somewhat in cheek. If not, then the remark is mildly anti-intellectual (not to mention ridiculous). But it provides slender support for the Crimson's suggestion that conservative criticism of Harvard is anti-intellectual.
The fundamental conservative criticism of Harvard is the same as its criticism of academia as a whole - that some of its precincts tend to provide students with leftist indoctrination rather than an intellectually balanced education. This critique, whether or not one agrees with it, isn't anti-intellectual.
As to whether conservatives students should apply to Harvard, I'm reminded of when I told a leading figure in the Bush adminstration, with a distinguished background in academia, that my daughter was applying to Brown and Dartmouth. "Equally bad," was his reply. When I asked where his kids had gone to college, he said that one of them had attended the notoriously leftist Reed College.
As John suggests, for conservative students few alternatives to Harvard exist that aren't "equally bad." So why not try to attend Harvard and annoy the Crimson?

Is Populist Anti-Intellectualism Wise?
Posted: 03 Mar 2013 11:47 AM PST
(John Hinderaker)
On Friday a producer of Larry Kudlow's CNBC show asked whether I would be willing to come on that evening to talk about this editorial in the Harvard Crimson. As it happened, I was already committed for the evening and had to decline, but that was just as well, as I wasn't sure what to say about the article in any event.
The Crimson editorial chides Harvard graduates who go on to use the university as a whipping boy, especially in a political context:
If you think Harvard is a revolutionary communist hotbed, don't apply. If you think Harvard is full of "pinheaded" professors, don't enroll. And if you think Harvard pollutes the minds of its students, don't walk out of here with a degree-and certainly don't get two.
You see, lately, there seems to be a pernicious trend of public figures-especially those on the right-falling in love with Harvard just long enough to benefit from its educational resources and, yes, its social prestige, before turning against our school. Just recently, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas affirmed his belief that Harvard Law School was, during his years as a student there, home to a cohort of "Marxists who believed in...overthrowing the United States government." In November, Fox News pundit and Harvard Kennedy School graduate Bill O'Reilly glibly referred to Harvard professors as "pinheaded" while implying that the Harvard community is morally suspect for its acceptance of Harvard College Munch, a group for students who share an interest in kinky sex. And last April, presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who holds a J.D. and MBA from our fine institution, lambasted President Obama for having spent "too much time at Harvard."
Such episodes of treachery are apparently attempts to curry favor with the more anti-intellectual members of our body politic. Yet it is finally time that we say enough is enough. We at The Crimson urge anyone who plans on one day scoring political points by maligning Harvard to neither apply, enroll, nor graduate from this fine institution.
Frankly, much as I disagree with the Crimson's political slant, I think the editors have a point. Do Ivy League institutions like Harvard tilt to the left? Of course. But left-wing outrages are just as likely to come from state universities (think Ward Churchill) and the local community college. There are great conservatives at the Ivy League schools, not to mention the many fine teachers who are more or less apolitical. And I do think it is a bit unseemly for Mitt Romney, who has degrees from both Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School, to tweak Barack Obama for spending too much time there.
Dismissive comments about educational institutions like Harvard are common on the right, and the Crimson's editors are not alone in seeing them as a manifestation of anti-intellectualism. They are intended, I take it, to strike a populist tone. But do they do so effectively? I don't think so. Putting aside the question whether Harvard is any more left-wing than, say, the University of Wisconsin, I suspect that attacks of the sort cited by the Crimson are counter-productive. Most people, rightly or wrongly, think of institutions like Harvard as places of great intellectual achievement-which is, after all, the point of singling them out for disdain. As far as I can see, for example, virtually everyone considers Barack Obama's having been President of the Harvard Law Review to be a fine thing, and some even considered it, however misguidedly, to be a qualification for high political office. Equating intellectualism with leftism plays into the (entirely false) narrative that paints conservatives as ignoramuses, and Republicans as the "stupid party."
The question of how conservatives and Republicans can better appeal to low-information voters is a critical one, and I don't have any easy answers. But there is little evidence that indulging in what comes across as anti-intellectual populism is an effective means to that end.

The Week in Pictures
Posted: 02 Mar 2013 02:36 PM PST
(Steven Hayward)
Time for another of our periodical photo-cartoon essays of the week that was.
The sequester hits DC.
Undoubtedly the best item of the week was Obama showing his pop-culture ignorance of the crucial distinction between (and superiority of) Star Trek and Star Wars by eschewing the use of a Jedi mind-meld. (And you thought his Spock-like ears actually meant something.) This is going to cost him at least 10 points in his approval ratings. Someone needs to sit him down and make him watch the Trekkie-Star Wars gang fights with Seth Rogen in Fanboys (a much under-rated movie in my book). Bonus! It turns out the Trekkie vs. Jedi Wars gang fight is up on YouTube! Anyway:
Speaking of science fiction, pretty sure this is a Firefly reference. Browncoats rule!
Boneless wonder #1
And boneless wonder #2. Still hard to put this guy and "swift" in the same sentence.

No wonder they have a bad attitude about us.

Smearing Gun Permit Holders By Omission
Posted: 02 Mar 2013 02:19 PM PST
(John Hinderaker)
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported yesterday that the State of Minnesota issued 31,657 permits to carry handguns in 2012, a record number. No surprise there. The Strib puts that number in the context of the current debate over gun control, and concludes with these statistics, presented without comment:
Minnesota's permit holders have committed at least 1,159 crimes since 2003, including 114 in which a gun was used, according to the BCA.
Wow, sounds like a regular crime wave among gun permit holders! But what do those data actually show? According to the same article, there are now over 125,000 permit holders in Minnesota, or around 2.6% of the over-21 population. So, other things being equal, you would expect them to commit something like 2 to 2 1/2% of all crimes (since a considerable number are committed by persons who are less than 21 years old). In order to put the Strib's numbers in context, you need to know something about the number of crimes committed in Minnesota.
According to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension's numbers, there were at least 146,249 crimes of violence and crimes against property in Minnesota in 2011. (I believe that total is low, if we are trying to get a number for all crimes, since drunk driving, for instance, is not included). Let's assume, to make the calculation simple, that the number of violent and property crimes has remained constant since 2003; actually, it has fallen somewhat. But using the 2011 rate for the period 2004-2012 yields a total of 1,316,241 crimes. (And you thought Minnesota was a law-abiding state!) Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that over that period of time there have been an average of 50,000 carry permit holders in Minnesota; that would be roughly 1.2% of the over-age 18 population. (Again, that is an average from 2004 through 2012, assuming an average of 50,000 permit holders over that time period.)
So do the math: if permit holders were as law-abiding as the average Minnesota citizen, you would expect them to have committed 1.2% of the 1,316,241 crimes from 2004 through 2012, or a total of a little over 16,300. Which tells us, according to the Strib's numbers, that non-permit holders are around 15 times as likely to commit a crime as permit holders. Carry permit holders must be the most law-abiding segment of Minnesota's population, with the possible exception of Sunday School teachers.
SIG Sauer P938 Extreme
I believe that since Minnesota enacted its shall-issue law in 2003, two permit holders have been charged with homicides. Over the eight years from 2004 through 2011, there were 807 homicides. Using the same logic employed above, one would expect 1.2%, of these homicides to have been perpetrated by carry permit holders. That would be nine or ten murders, as opposed to two.
A representative of the Minnesota Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance offered similar numbers with respect to drunk driving:
Rothman responded that permit holders commit much less than their share of crime, citing as an example that though one in seven Minnesotans has a DWI on their record, only one in 545 of the state's permit holders got one after getting a permit. "No one ever claimed permit holders would be perfect," Rothman said, "but the numbers show (they) are consistently orders of magnitude more law abiding than the general public."
Other analyses have shown that permit holders are far less likely than other Minnesotans to commit assaults and other crimes.
One could tinker with all of these numbers around the edges, but there is no escaping the conclusion that permit holders are remarkably law-abiding, and commit far fewer crimes than would be expected, given their numbers. That being the case, it was deceptive for the Star-Tribune to recite numbers for crimes committed by permit holders without putting them into context and noting how extraordinarily low the numbers are.

Brennan and the bin Laden files

Tom Joscelyn writes:
My latest in the Weekly Standard deals with Osama bin Laden's files. The Obama administration, despite its supposed commitment to transparency, has released just 17 files and a handful of video clips from a corpus totaling "hundreds of thousands of documents and files." Tom Donilon, Obama's national security adviser, has said that the documents and files would fill a "small college library." There are compelling reasons to think that the administration has politicized the documents' contents and this has a direct bearing on the course of America's counterterrorism strategy.

Hitler Learns About Power Line's Pop-Up Ads
Posted: 02 Mar 2013 10:12 AM PST
(Steven Hayward)
Up to now Power Line has been supported wholly by ads, and has eschewed any kind of paywall or subscription fee. We don't fully control the ad rotation-that's why I kept getting Alan Grayson ads before the last election on my screen, which I found rather amusing actually. Clearly Grayson's campaign didn't use Obama's data mining wizards to target his media.
But in any case, internet ads-especially the pop-up kind-are the online equivalent of the loose magazine subscription cards that fall out in your lap or the coupon circulars in the Sunday papers: a necessary nuisance of doing business. (Thank God Alan Grayson didn't have pop-up ads at least; that could have ruined many meals. Talk about politics as show business for ugly people!)
In our ongoing efforts to think up new ways to expand Power Line further and offer more content (new things coming soon!), we float ideas and experiment from time to time. It's amazing how many people read Power Line in the middle of the night (perhaps our overseas readers?), because we heard from a lot of you when we experimented briefly in the middle of the night a few days ago with a survey widget, which is one of the new things being tried on websites. It's quite obtrusive, asking you to answer a question before getting access to an article.
Anyway, our chief critic caught up with the scheme at a recent Power Line editorial board meeting, as you'll see here. (And somehow I can't seem to get the pop-up to turn off inside of YouTube. So the joke is really on us now.)
JOHN adds: Don't worry, we don't have any intention of implementing the survey. But the video-Steve gets all the credit-is hilarious, in my opinion.

The Weekly Winston: Obama Boneless Wonder Edition
Posted: 02 Mar 2013 08:57 AM PST
(Steven Hayward)
In honor of the recent Cabinet confirmations of John Kerry, Jack Lew, and Chuck Hagel, it becomes apparent that Churchill's famous remark about Ramsey MacDonald as "the boneless wonder" is for once inadequate to the moment: Obama has installed an entire boneless chicken farm. To do full justice to the complete mediocrity that is Obama's second term, we'll need to roll out the entire repertoire of Churchill's dismissals of MacDonald, Stanley Baldwin, Neville Chamberlain, Clement Attlee, and Aneurin Bevan-all of which are a perfect fit for the Great O and his team of tiny toy men:
About MacDonald (in 1933):
We know that he has, more than any other man, the gift of compressing the largest number of words into the smallest amount of thought. . . On the whole his four years of control of our foreign relations have brought us nearer to war, and have made us weaker, poorer and more defenseless . . .
About Attlee (post-war):
Mr. Attlee combines a limited outlook with strong qualities of resistance. . . He is too wise [to go to Moscow]. He dare not absent himself from his Cabinet at home. He knows full well that when the mouse is away the cats will play.
About Bevan (1946):
There is however poetic justice in the fact that the most mischievous political mouth in wartime has also become, in peace, the most remarkable administrative failure.
About Baldwin (1936):
Occasionally he stumbled over the truth, but hastily picked himself up and hurried on as if nothing had happened.
And this bit about Chamberlain, from early 1938, applies perfectly to Obama:
When we have the Prime Minister here, what is the good of worrying about the Foreign Secretary? What is the point of crying out for the moon when you have the sun, when you have the bright orb of day in whose refulgent beams all the lesser luminaries hide their radiance?
Like I say, an entire boneless chicken farm is in place at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Hat tip, as always, to Richard Langworth's indispensable Churchill quote collection.

Barack Obama, Spending Junkie
Posted: 01 Mar 2013 12:41 PM PST
(John Hinderaker)
One would hope that the spectacle the Democrats have made of themselves over the prospect of a modest increase in federal spending for FY 2013 would be enlightening to a lot of voters. The Democrats' craving for federal dollars is not unlike that of a junkie for heroin, and the lengths of dishonesty to which Barack Obama and the Democrats will go to keep the money flowing are likewise reminiscent of the pathetic actions of a drug addict.
So in my view, this Michael Ramirez cartoon is right on the mark:

The Global Cooling Scare Revisited
Posted: 01 Mar 2013 12:20 PM PST
(Steven Hayward)
The climate campaign always tries to downplay the fact that the global cause du jour in the mid-1970s was the prospect of a new ice age. It was only a handful of marginal scientists (though Newsweek reported the scientific community was "almost unanimous" about the threat of cooling, almost as though it was a "consensus"), and a few scattered media reports.
The indispensable WattsUpWithThat website of Anthony Watts has done a public service by collating a large number of the press accounts of the issue from the time, and offers a list of 65 stories between 1970 and 1980. Keep in mind that these only represent the ones that are retrievable on the Internet today; there are likely a multiple of this not available online.
And then there's this fabulous one-minute snippet from the late 1970s featuring the late Stephen Schneider, one of the leading warmists of the last two decades, plumping for the new ice age hypothesis back then:

From the mixed-up files of Obama's trusted friend
Posted: 01 Mar 2013 10:59 AM PST
(Scott Johnson)
In his most recent verbal assault against Israel, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan has characterized Zionism as a crime against humanity along with anti-Semitism, fascism, and, of course, Islamophobia. Isn't leaving homophobia off such a list itself a crime against humanity?
Prime Minister Netanyahu has issued this concise response: "This is a dark and mendacious statement the likes of which we thought had passed from the world."
Netanyahu is constrained by the conventions of diplomacy. Almost as concise but more to my taste is the less constrained response of the head of the Conference of European Rabbis, Pinchas Goldschmidt, in an email to Reuters: "The irony of these comments will not be lost on the families of those slaughtered during the Armenian genocide, a crime still not recognized by the Turkish government."
Andrew McCarthy's new book devotes substantial attention to the deep thoughts of Erdogan. Andy puts Erdogan's noxious emission in context here, though not the kind of context that excuses the offense. Let's give Andy the last word for the moment at somewhat greater length:
I think "crime against humanity" has become a verbal tic for Turkey's Islamic-supremacist Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In Vienna, at one of the UN's nauseating "dialogues" between Islam and the West (you know, those conferences where Western leaders explain how much they admire Islam and Islamic leaders reciprocate by explaining how much they, too, admire Islam), Erdogan pronounced Zionism a "crime against humanity," which he placed on a par with anti-Semitism. The latter is a subject Erdogan knows a thing or two about.
As I recount in Spring Fever: The Illusion of Islamic Democracy (just released in paperback this week), Erdogan first burst on the scene almost 40 years ago as the 20-year-old writer-director-star of a theatrical production called Maskomya. As Andy Bostom edifies us, Mas-Kom-Ya is short for Masons, Communists, and, yes, Yahudi - Jews. In Erdogan's telling, these were evil subversive groups whose common denominator was - all together now! - Judaism.
Spring Fever documents Erdogan's application of "crime against humanity" label to calls for Muslims in Europe and America to assimilate in the Western societies where they've chosen to live. He also said it was a "crime against humanity" for Israel to defend itself in 2008's "Operation Cast Lead" after over 3000 rockets and mortar shells were fired into Israeli territory by Hamas - the international terrorist organization that Erdogan's Turkey lavishly funds and whose leaders he receives as dignitaries.
In this week's Vienna speech, Erdogan reached unprecedented epistemological buffoonery when he explained that not only Zionism but Islamophobia is a "crime against humanity." Either he does not know what a crime is or he does not know what a phobia is, but since a rational mental state is required for the former the latter doesn't qualify. Or maybe Erdogan knows exactly what crimes and phobias are, but as an Islamo-fascist he figures such niceties should never get in the way of a good smear. Oh, almost forgot, Erdogan also said fascism was a "crime against humanity." Between his invocation of anti-Semitism and fascism, we see that Erdogan at least knows how to project.
In 1975, a year after Maskomya had its run, Erdogan's fellow Islamic-supremacists engineered the passage of U.N. General Assembly Resolution 3379, declaring that Zionism was a form of racism. The condemnation by the United States of this blatant act of anti-Semitism was unequivocal. The late Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., asserted, "The United States ... does not acknowledge, it will never abide by, it will never acquiesce in this infamous act." Even the fraudulent enterprise that is the U.N. eventually felt compelled to buckle under forceful American leadership (much of it provided in the Bush 41 State Department by a young assistant secretary named John Bolton). The noxious "Zionism equals racism" resolution was finally repealed in 1991.
Now, Erdogan has seen racism and raised it to a crime against humanity, but we've thus far heard no Moynihan-like condemnation from the Obama administration.
Notwithstanding that the prime minister's claim to fame is imprisoning uncooperative journalists and political opponents on trumped up charges, President Obama has described Erdogan as one of his most "trusted friends" among world leaders. Although Erdogan is a top provider of material support to Hamas, a serious felony in the United States, Obama recently said of him: "The bottom line is that we find ourselves in frequent agreement upon a wide range of issues." And, indeed, it is Erdogan who has been prodding Obama to repeat the administration's Libya debacle by overtly supporting the Syrian "rebels" - the jihadist-rife, Muslim Brotherhood-dominated opposition seeking to topple the Iran-backed regime of Bashar al-Assad. It appears Obama and his second-term foreign policy team are poised to give Erdogan his way.
Sigh. Maybe for just a few minutes, Obama could pretend that Erdogan was a Republican and that anti-Zionism was the sequester...

Newt Gingrich: What Is To Be Done?
Posted: 01 Mar 2013 09:24 AM PST
(John Hinderaker)
Newt Gingrich met yesterday with some Republican Congressional staffers and gave them the memo below, which I obtained from a Congressional aide. It lays out Newt's assessment of where the Democratic and Republican parties stand today. Much of it will seem familiar to readers of this site, but Newt sets forth the facts-many of them grim-with his customary panache. This is obviously a big topic, and I have just a few comments on Newt's memo which I will save until the end. Here it is:
For now, just a few quick observations:
1) I think Newt's assessment of the Democrats' strategy and intentions is correct.
2) Newt's sense of urgency is well-founded. At the moment, the Democrats are well ahead of the GOP both strategically and technically.
3) It may well be true that we need "a new model Republican doctrine and system," and that Republicans need to "build a system for a permanent campaign with a 24/7 strategy," etc. However, doing these things will be difficult, to say the least, in an environment where the Republicans lack any sort of centralized leadership, an inevitable consequence of not controlling the White House.
4) I think Newt hits the nail on the head when he says: "The 2012 turnout mechanisms will be modernized, improved and strengthened to try to make 2014 turnout resemble 2012 rather than 2010." That is, I think, the central point of the Democrats' manifold strategies.

Clowning in Rome?*
Posted: 01 Mar 2013 09:02 AM PST
(Steven Hayward)
Best tweet of the day so far may belong to David Freddoso, who says "BREAKING SEQUESTER NEWS ** DUE TO BUDGET CUTS, THERE IS NO POPE ANYMORE - YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN, PEOPLE **." Heh.
More seriously, since we wrote here a couple of weeks ago about the theological studliness (that's a technical term right out of the Catechism, isn't it?) of Pope Benedict, there has been a media frenzy about whether a secret report about Vatican corruption is linked to Benedict's decision to step down-or perhaps even that he was forced out. I'm sure Bob Woodward can sort this out for us, and that the rest of the media will accept his findings unquestioningly, as they always do.
In the meantime, somewhere in the cobwebs of my mind the old saying about "life imitating art" comes along, recalling dimly the 1981 Morris West novel The Clowns of God. The plot revolved around a Pope who claimed to have received a direct revelation from God concerning the imminence of the ends times and the Second Coming of Jesus. Can't have that around the Vatican, so the hierarchy forces Pope Gregory XVII to resign, after which the former Pope goes on a private quest to prepare to meet the arrival of Jesus. Cold War tensions provide the context for the novel and the plausible basis for thinking the End Times were upon us (how original was that?), but one wonders whether the Catholic Church might be on the cusp of another Reformation-like challenge if the rumors of rampant corruption are even a little bit true. Certainly the church hierarchy's bureaucratic behavior in the clergy sex abuse scandals was less than reassuring.
Morris West died in 1999; if he were still with us he might have to rewrite The Clowns of God to reflect that what challenges the church most is not world-historical trends like nuclear weapons and the Cold War, but the basic frailty of all human institutions.
*P.S. Yes, in case you're wondering, the headline for this post is indeed an obscure reference to the Henry Nouwen classic of contemplation, Clowning in Rome.

In today's Morning Bell, Heritage Foundation President-Elect Jim DeMint boils down the complicated issue of sequestration with a simple analogy:
|
Suppose you desperately needed to lose weight but had a Big Mac with fries and a Coke staring you in the face. You could take your need to diet seriously and say, "No thanks, I'll have a salad." Or you could decide to reduce the Big Mac meal by 2 percent-pushing aside a couple French fries and gobbling up the rest.
If you took Option B, how do you think that "diet" would work out for you? Well, that, my friends, is the tale of the sequester that hit us this morning.

Read the whole thing, including DeMint's call for "a true spending diet."
This week, Congress passed the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, known inside the Beltway as VAWA.
Nobody can deny that violence against women is unacceptable. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agreed that domestic violence cannot be tolerated. But the bill passed by the House of Representatives on Thursday reauthorizes a law of unproven effectiveness.
VAWA authorizes the government to award grant money to organizations with little track record of success, Heritage Foundation expert David Muhlhausen explains. For example, the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence Against Women is the primary recipient of VAWA funding. But their reporting of their success is flawed and misleading.
Women must be protected from violence. But this is a fight that must be waged at the state and local level, not the federal level. Even when motives are good, lawmakers should think twice before reauthorizing laws fraught with unnecessary components and unproven results.
Do you think VAWA is the right approach to domestic violence?
The Supreme Court this week heard oral arguments in Alabama v. Holder, the constitutional challenge to Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. Heritage Foundation legal expert Hans von Spakovsky recaps the arguments, gives us background on the case and explains the law's shaky legal grounding.
Section 5, von Spakovsky explains, is "an emergency provision passed by Congress in 1965 that was originally supposed to terminate after five years. It was renewed for a fourth time in 2006 for another 25 years."
Shelby County, Alabama and the state are still subject to Section 5's restrictions-based on data from elections held more than 40 years ago. "Under the current rate of registration and turnout of voters, neither Shelby County nor Alabama would be covered under Section 5," von Spakovsky notes.
In fact, the state that today has the worst disparity between black and white voter registration is Massachusetts, but that state isn't subject to federal voting supervision under Section 5. The best state on that measure? Mississippi, which is subject to federal controls.
"This is clear evidence that Section 5 no longer reflects actual conditions around the country," von Spakovsky argues.
Do you think Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act should be overturned? Tell us in the comments.

A controversial government study today revealed an astounding conclusion: free lunches are expensive and lack nutrition. All copies of the study have since disappeared and the members of the blue-ribbon panel which produced it have not been seen since it was released. President Obama condemned the results, alleging that the panelists were "receiving bread under the table from the restaurant industry." "It's nonsense," said the president.
