Long layover in Frankfort..nearby towns?

We are going to be in Frankfort before going on to Copenhagen. On our return trip we have an 8 hour layover in the Frankfort airport. Is there any nearby town (other than Frankfort) we could get to by train that would be interesting and take less than a half hour to reach by train, so we could spend an a couple of hours sightseeing and still easily get to and from the airport?

Mainz is a good bet.

Small but nice old town along Augustinerstrasse, Cathedral (Dom), Gutenberg Museum, lots of shopping and cafes in the pedestrian zone near the Dom.

Use S-Bahn to the Mainz Römisches Theater train station (about 20 minutes; this is not the main station), which is the first stop after crossing the Rhine, for easiest access on foot to this area.

Thank You Russ. Does the S-Bahn leave from the airport? Do you know how often it goes?

Why not visit Frankfurt? There is lots to see there and it is only 15 min. from the airport. There is the cathedral where the emperors were elected and crowned, the Holocaust Memorial Wall with over 11,000 names on it, the 900 year old city hall and the surrounding area, the Roman bath ruins, beautiful churches dating from the 12th century, the beautiful rebuilt opera house, the original ghetto wall from 1180, fabulous museums along the river and there is always some sort of festival going on. Everything to see is right in the middle of town, which makes it easy to sight see. Even the main train station is gorgeous. Give it a try!

Dear Jo:
Thank you for the information on Frankfort. We have an overnight layover there on the way back from Europe, and have booked a hotel downtown. However, we have an 8 hour layover on the way to Portugal, and wondered if there was another town, closer to the airport, where we could spend a few hours.

Yes, there is a RR station in the Frankfurt air terminal on the lower level. Follow the signs. No need to go outside.

When planning a day trip, I always start by looking at a map to see which towns are within a day's travel time. Then I google the town name and "Sights" to determine what is there of interest. Then I decide if I want to spend the time to go.

Then I go to the RR station and by a return ticket and ask for a computer print of my itinerary so I know the train numbers and what time the trains leave and when they arrive. Having something in my hand to refer to always brings comfort to me.
