Long layover in Frankfurt. What to do?
Save

Hi all. Just booked and we have a 17 hour layover in Frankfurt.

We arrive 3:30 pm on a Saturday and don't connect until 8 am the next morning. I have no idea how long clearing immigration and customs will take as well as checking in but I hope that still leaves us enough time to see a part of the city. Maybe it's best to get back to the airport by 2-3 am but not sure if it's wise.

Never been to Frankfurt, or Germany for that matter so any advice on what to do, things to see, managing our time would be greatly appreciated.

After arrival, you should be emerging into the airport with-in 30 min. Then you can make your way into the city. It is pretty quick and efficient.

Stay at a hotel in the city, near the train station, as it is only 11 min. away, unless you want to stay the Sheraton, Hilton, or Steigenberger. They have the best airport locations but are the priciest. Hotels in the city will be a lot cheaper.

The next morning, ride back to the airport. The trains start running at 04:15.

Thanks a lot! I'll look into it and come back if I have more questions.

Any recommendations on what to do while we are there?

FRA is located between Frankfurt and Mainz, a smaller city on the Rhine river to the west and a pleasant place to stroll for a few hours. It's a 22-minute train ride (3.90€) to the Mainz Römisches Theater (Roman Theater) train station, which lies just south of Mainz's old town center. There's an Ibis hotel one block from this station, and from the hotel, you can walk a few blocks north into the heart of town, a compact area with a handsome Romanesque cathedral surrounded by a pedestrians-only zone with nice cafes and attractive pre-war buildings. A more modern shopping zone, also pedestrians only, lies just to the north of this area.

Mainz is also known for the Gutenberg Museum and the Chagall windows at the Stefanskirche (church.)

Trains to FRA run from the Mainz RT station beginning at 4 a.m.

The Mainz Römisches Theater station was once called the Mainz South station but got a new name a few years ago when a Roman Theater that has been buried for centuries near the rear platform of the station began to undergo excavation.

Wow. Thanks for the load of info.

But...is there a possibility to leave the luggage somewhere at the airport? Not too keen on booking a hotel and want to roam light.

If you stay close to the train station, I recommend walking an extra 5-10 minutes north into the Westend. Lots of nice, small hotels in a better, quieter neighborhood. The Bahnhofvertel (area near the train station) has improved but is still sort of raunchy.

The Bahnhof Quarter is only raunchy if you walk down the streets where the Red Light district is located, so over on Taunus Str. / Mosel Str. The rest is no more raunchy than any other place, and is filled with all kinds of ethnic markets, restaurants, small hotels, etc.

If you want a place with a view though, try the Ibis on the Friedensbrucke, which gives you a view of the river, cheap rooms, and it is about a 5-10 min. walk from the station.
