Located just above Hollywood, the distinctive Observatory building can be seen for miles. Whether you walk, bike, take the bus, grab a shared ride, or drive, a visit to the Observatory should be part of any trip to Los Angeles.

Explore

From daily Samuel Oschin Planetarium shows and public telescope observing to monthly and special events, Griffith Observatory has something for everyone. Whether you're looking at the sky, the exhibits, or the Hollywood Sign, we can help you be an observer.

All Space Considered

The third Thursday of each month, the Observatory presents this free inside look at the most talked-about subjects in astronomy, space science, and space exploration. Observatory curatorial staff and special guests bring visitors up to date on what is going on in space. The presentations are offered free to the public.

Ongoing Events

Telescope demonstrator Katy Haugland uses a laser to point out celestial wonders to Observatory patrons while standing next to a telescope on the lawn.

Star Parties

Once a month, the Observatory partners with local telescope groups to share their telescopes and knowledge with the public. With dozens of telescopes on the lawn, there’s always something to see!

ABOVE

ABOVE the city lights, ABOVE the persistent glow of screens and daily distractions, there is a vast night sky. Meet us there.

Eclipses

People have always paid attention to eclipses. Before they knew what was happening, people feared eclipses because the ever-present Sun or Moon would suddenly disappear. Though we now understand why eclipses occur and can predict them precisely, they are still compelling to observe.

Travel to the farthest reaches of the universe and into the microscopic building blocks of life. Live presentations immerse you in the wonder and meaning of the cosmos.

Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater

Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater

The 190-seat Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon presentation theater dramatically expands the Observatory's programming and education capabilities. The Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon realizes an unfulfilled intention of the Observatory's original architects to have a second theater to complement the planetarium.

Event Archives

Since reopening in 2006 after the renovation and expansion project, the Observatory has hosted hundreds of public events and activities. Whether for eclipses, notable spacecraft anniversaries, or special speakers, the events offered the chance for the public to experience, learn, or be inspired. Sometimes all at the same time!
