LOS ANGELES, CA — After nearly a year of closure, AMC Theaters will reopen 25 locations in Los Angeles this week. The news comes as the county prepares to exit the state's toughest coronavirus restrictions. Its flagship locations in Burbank and Santa Monica will open Monday afternoon.

The county has long been regarded an epicenter for COVID-19 cases in California. After a recent plunge in cases and a rise in vaccinations — despite a dosage supply decifit — the county will finally be able to move into the substantial, red tier on the state's reopening blueprint.

The county was expected to ease restrictions on Monday, paving the way for movie theaters and museums to reopen and allow indoor dining for the first time in nearly a year.

AMC Theaters, one of the largest cinema chains in the state, will reopen flagship locations in Los Angeles — AMC Burbank 16 and AMC Century City 15 on Monday afternoon. The company will reopen the rest of its 23 movie theaters in LA County beginning March 19.

Under the red tier, indoor movie theaters can open at 25 percent of the facility's capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer.

"The reopening of movie theatres in Los Angeles County and throughout California is a momentous occasion for AMC Theatres, for our guests, for our associates, for our studio partners, and for the entire theatrical exhibition industry," said Adam Aron, CEO and President of AMC.

The company has more than 525 locations across the country.

"AMC will reopen with the highest devotion to the health and safety of our guests and associates through our AMC Safe & Clean policies and protocols, which were developed in consultation with Clorox and with current and former faculty at the prestigious Harvard University School of Public Health," Aron said.

AMC's Safe & Clean plan can be found here and a list of all Los Angeles cinemas can be found here.

Theaters will begin showing some of the following movies:

  • "Raya And The Last Dragon"
  • "Tom & Jerry"
  • "Chaos Walking"
  • "Boogie"
  • "The Father"
  • "The Little Things"
  • "Judas And The Black Messiah"
  • "The Croods"
  • "Wonder Woman 1984"
  • "Nomadland"

Thirteen counties — including Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino — moved into the red tier on the state's COVID-19 accessing blueprint on Sunday. On Wednesday, another 13 counties, including Riverside County, will be able to advance into the red tier as well.

As more counties turn red this week, AMC plans to open more than 56 California AMC theaters once it is given the green light in each county.
