The Shores of Indiana’s Lakes Indiana may not be the Land of 10,000 lakes like Minnesota, but large or small, natural or manmade, the state has its share of aquatic allure.

The largest of Indiana natural lakes, of course, is Lake Michigan, the only Great Lake completely within the U.S. and

shared with Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin. Lake Michigan’s nature can be as variable as Indiana weather— if you don’t like it, just wait a minute and it’ll change, as the saying goes. Depending on how the wind blows, the lake can be calm and gentle, rolling and nervous, or wild and raging and full of ominous power. It’s all part of what makes the largest natural lake along the state’s northwest border so enticing and attractive for visitors. Nature lovers can find miles of dune trails to hike, beaches to swim, bogs to explore, and wildlife to spot, while anglers have ample opportunity to catch salmon, trout, perch and other game fish. According to the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, between Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Indiana Dunes State Park, there are 60 miles of trails, 350 different bird species, 15 miles of beach, and 1,100 flowering plants and ferns. Both the park—one of twenty state parks nationally to be nominated for the USA Today Best State Parks list this year—and national lakeshore offer plenty of camping opportunities from full electric sites, to more primitive wooded campgrounds. Indiana Dunes State Park boasts three miles of lakeshore beaches and 200-foot high sand dunes along with wooded nature trails amongst and behind the dunes. The Southern tip of Lake Michigan traverses a crescent-shaped shoreline from where Chicago blends into Indiana east into Michigan City. It’s a beautiful journey of beaches, dunes, forests, and charming towns, both big and small.

WhoaZone, touted as one of the largest water playgrounds in the Midwest, is an important component of the remarkable remaking of Whiting, nestled on the Indiana state line just one soaring bridge across the Calumet River and Harbor from Chicago. Once known for its tough industrial grittiness, oil refineries and the huge Unilever Brothers building capped with a largerthan-life box of one of the laundry soaps they produced, Whiting has morphed into an uber cool city, attracting visitors from around the country. Noting that WhoaZone at Whihala Beach in Whiting, is a naturebased, active summer destination for families to enjoy, Amy Frets, Director of Communications for the City of Whiting, describes this popular attraction as a floating waterpark made up of slides, trampolines, towers, wiggle bridges, monkey bars, and numerous other play features which combined create a large obstacle course on the lake. “It’s the first of its kind for Lake Michigan,” says Frets, adding that WhoaZone at Whihala offers rentals for stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, beach cabanas, merchandise, and more. “The City of Whiting has benefited greatly from this addition to the lakefront by attracting more visitors from out of town. In 2017, the WhoaZone attracted nearly 21,000 visitors representing 34 different states and multiple countries.” Just a short walk from the beach, Whiting’s historic downtown offers a plethora of boutiques and eateries as well as the Hoosier Theatre, with its ornate terra-cotta façade and first run movies, built in 1931. The city’s famed Pierogi Fest alone draws more than 300,000 people for the three-day event. “The goal is to bring people to our city and provide them with a family-fun and unique experience,” explains Mayor Joseph M. Stahura. “Visitors can enjoy our parks, beach, stadium district, special events and attractions, as well as

Marquette Park Pavilion, with its twin towers and grand two-story entryway above the lagoon in the Grand Calumet River, has been a focal point since first opening in 1923. Winner of the 2014 Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration, the pavilion is unique in that architect George W. Lakes Shafer and Freeman, the twin lakes of White and Carroll

Counties in northwest central Indiana, are a pair of reservoir lakes built on the Tippecanoe River in the 1920s to generate electricity. Shafer is the more well-known of the two lakes with Indiana Beach Amusement Resort, a 90-year-old landmark, just north of the city of Monticello.

A main attraction of Lake Freeman, besides fishing and boating, is

the lake’s boat Madam Carroll. The boat offers regular evening tours of the lake and includes snacks, drinks, and live entertainment on two decks.

The largest inland lake in Indiana is the man-made reservoir of Lake Monroe with 10,750 acres of water spread over Monroe, Brown, and Jackson counties near Bloomington. The lake boasts nine boat launch sites, more than 200 camp sites, LAKE MONROE cultural arts and interpretive programs, a nature center, volleyball courts, three distinct state recreational areas—Fairfax, Hardin Ridge and Paynetown— beaches, boat rentals, and a full-service marina. Second of the large reservoirs in Indiana is Patoka Lake at 8,800 watered acres inside Hoosier National Forest in Dubois, Crawford, and Orange Counties. Like Monroe, Patoka was designed for flood control, as well as providing a supply of water for 12 counties. Sometimes called Raccoon Lake from the surrounding Raccoon State Recreation Area, Cecil M. Harden Lake sits amongst a nature lover’s paradise near Rockville in Parke County. The 2,110-acre lake has a variety of plant and animal life around it, as well as aquatic life within it. A side attraction is the nearby Historic Mansfield Roller Mill, an 1880s working flour mill open to visitors. Parke county features 31 covered bridges and is known as “The covered bridge capital of the World.” www.coveredbridges.com Starve Hollow Lake near Vallonia in Jackson County is relatively small at 145 acres, but is set in the 280 acre Starve Hollow Recreation Area. The recreation area is in turn surrounded by 18,000 acres of Jackson-Washington State Forest. Fishing, a swimming beach, rowboat and canoe rentals, tent camping, electric hookup campsites, and rent-acamp cabins are all available at the lake. A River Runs Through It—Indiana’s Riverfronts

Make a Splash in the Bend The East Race Waterway in downtown South Bend is the first man-made whitewater rafting course built in North America. Since opening in 1984, over 400,000 residents and visitors have ridden down the East Race with paddles in hand and smiles on their faces. Once a driver of industry producing heat and electricity, the East Race Waterway now produces class 2 rapids and lifelong memories for rafters and kayakers to test their skills and have some summer fun. Every steep drop and every big splash are all a part of the thrill of white water rafting in downtown South Bend. You may even hit one of the rapids and be thrown into the water. You and your fellow rafters will have to work together to keep a steady path as you battle all the twists, turns, and drops along the 1,900-foot-long course. Connected walkways and bridges along the course will allow your family and friends to cheer you on and take photos of your journey down the rapids.

The waters of St. Mary’s, St. Joseph, and Maumee Rivers flow together in northeast Indiana near the Ohio border, which is why General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, the Revolutionary War hero, built a fort here in 1794. Now the rivers of Fort Wayne are more about recreation than winning battles. That’s why the city’s “Riverfront Fort Wayne” development group, led by the city’s Parks and Recreation department, was established and are helping the riverfront evolve and develop into a center of activity and powerful source of regional pride. The history of the Fort Wayne waterways is carried on with the introduction of Sweet Breeze, a 54-foot replica of an authentic 1840’s canal boat. The flat bottom boat takes passengers on either a 45- or 90-minute tour offering scenic views of the three rivers. Fort Wayne Outfitters and Bike Depot, which organizes the cruises, also offers sunset rides leaving from The Deck at Hall’s Gas House. Wine and other beverages are available for purchase at boarding. But that’s not the only way to travel along the rivers. The Gas House also offers airboat rides on weekend nights. Fort Wayne Outfitters not only rents kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards but takes people on a 90-minute land and water tour on Fort Wayne’s duck boat, an amphibious vehicle built for quick land-to-shore and back trips for troops and supplies during World War II. FW Outfitters is also the launching point for Captain Black’s pontoon tours which travel along the St. Mary’s and St. Joseph rivers as they wind through Fort Wayne’s downtown. The tours are private and can host up to 12 passengers. The city has also developed several water trails for paddlers (kayaks and canoes can also be rented from Earth Adventures) and, for joggers, walkers and cyclists, the 25-mile Rivergreenway Trail running along the banks of the three rivers through 15 parks as it connects Fort Wayne and New Haven.

Tippecanoe: An Ancient Native American Pathway A designated Canoe Trail and named one of the Top Ten most important freshwater systems in North America by The Nature Conservancy in Rivers of Life: Critical Watersheds for Protecting Biodiversity, the Tippecanoe River flows through the 40-acre Winamac Town Park. “It’s looked at as the gold standard of streams for biological cleanliness by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources,” says Krysten L. Hinkle, Project Coordinator for the Pulaski County Community Development Commission. “It winds through the towns of Monterey and Winamac and has inspired many other designated recreational areas, including the Tippecanoe River State Park and a designated Canoe Trail.” The park, which Hinkle describes as phenomenal, features the Soldier & Sailor Memorial Suspension Bridge—a pedestrian bridge crossing the river. Sandy beaches and peaceful shorelines are a short drive for most Hoosiers are, there’s one not far from you, and certainly a lot closer than Florida. Indiana’s system of state parks has 32 properties, and all of them offer a chance to relax by the water, from small ponds and creeks to glacial kettle lakes to the nearly mile-wide Ohio River. And each boasts some form of water recreation, from fishing to water skiing. But if you are looking for big water with an array of aquatic opportunities, three categories stand out. The first, summarized already, is Indiana Dunes and Lake Michigan, occupying an entire category on its own. The second is Indiana’s eight large man-made lakes managed by the DNR Division of State Parks for recreation. And the third category consists of Indiana State Park properties along the Ohio and Wabash rivers. They are Clifty Falls, Charlestown, Falls of the Ohio, and O’Bannon Woods state parks on the Ohio, and Harmonie State Park on the Wabash River. Regardless of category, all properties except Falls of the Ohio offer overnight accommodations in the form of modern campgrounds. And Clifty Falls State Park, overlooking the

Kelly Cochrane had been to Lake Michigan once. She was a kid with her parents, passing through northern Indiana. It was nighttime. The experience didn’t leave much of an impression. So when she visited the lake with her own kids last summer, it was like seeing it for the first time. “It was really beautiful,” she said. Kelly, her fiancé, Jeremy, and their three children, Andrew, 13, Emily, 12, and Aubrey, 11, vacationed in northwest Indiana for four days in July, spending much of their time at Indiana Dunes State Park. The Terre Haute family swam, buried each other in the sand, hiked the trails, and climbed the dunes. “I wanted to go to the beach and didn’t want to go to Florida,” Kelly said. “I just thought it would be a good place to show the kids.” Her instinct was right. When it comes to waterfront destinations in Indiana, the Dunes region is among the most obvious, renowned for its wide, sandy beaches, turquoise water, forested sand hills and fishing opportunities. The state park alone attracts one million visitors annually.

Indiana’s eight DNR-managed lakes are Brookville, Cagles Mill (aka Lieber), C.M. Harden (aka Raccoon), Hardy, Mississinewa, Monroe, Patoka and Salamonie. The largest is Monroe with nearly 11,000 acres of water. The smallest is Hardy with about 800. Each lake provides at least one swimming beach, boat ramps, and are open to water skiing and other motorized boating. Most have boat rentals through private operators. And, if you ever tire of being on the water, hundreds of acres of natural land surrounds each lake for hiking, camping, bicycling, and more.

“I think my mom gave us the idea of Patoka.” While the family lives among the dramatic landscapes of the mountainous West, Patoka, with its forested shorelines and craggy hillsides, inspired. The family stayed at a private lodge nearby, but visited the lake’s Newton-Stewart State Recreation Area regularly to see the nature center, picnic, hike, swim, and fish. They also rented a pontoon for a day with a slide from the top deck to the water. “The kids loved the pontoon boat,” Emily said. “We went to a quiet cove and swam for hours and hours and hours.”

The relocated bridge opened Rose Island to widespread exploration for the first time in decades and new wayside interpretive panels tell Rose Island’s story. A few miles west of Charlestown is Falls of the Ohio State Park, known for its nearly 300-million-year-old fossil bed, which is sometimes exposed and sometimes underwater. The months of August thru October provide the best accessibility to the 220 acres of fossil beds, as the river is at its lowest level during this period. The park also offers fishing and a boat launch, but no overnight lodging. A fourth park borders the Ohio River, O’Bannon Woods State Park, but its frontage is small and undeveloped, and most recreation is land-based. Harmonie along the Wabash is similar to Charlestown with plenty of woods and hills, but also river frontage and a boat ramp. So, this spring as you plan your summer vacation, resist the urge to travel to some saltwater destination. The time you save traveling can be spent relaxing along the thousands of miles of shoreline throughout Indiana.

with, even away from boating.” At Clifty Falls, the southern property boundary lies just short of the Ohio River. Is the park waterfront? Maybe not, at least technically speaking. But its proximity to water and sweeping hilltop views of the Ohio qualify it, even if you can’t launch a boat or lounge at the beach there. In addition to its view, the park is known for its rugged landscape with cliffs and canyons and waterfalls, and its inn. Visiting historic Madison on a moment’s notice is another park perk. “You really are still in the middle of nowhere if you are in the park,” said Gary Brown of Indianapolis, who lists the park as a favorite. “Madison is a cool town but the park is its own experience, too. You can have multiple enjoyable experiences in a short time.” Charlestown occupies about 5,100 acres on the river, with overlooks and a public boat ramp. Much of the river frontage is along mysterious Rose Island. The “island” is actually a narrow limestone peninsula at the confluence of the river and Fourteenmile Creek. It’s named

after a resort that operated from 1923 until 1937, when the Ohio River swept much of it downstream. Left behind were the concrete foundations and scattered remains of a hotel, dance hall, zoo, cottages and other buildings, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Manicured green spaces eventually surrendered to nature and became home to bobcats, deer, turkeys and bald eagles. According to some, Rose Island’s location made it a great place to drink and gamble. Stories tell of smoke-filled backrooms, lookouts, FBI raids, and illegal slot machines tossed into Fourteenmile Creek. Access was difficult until 2012, when the park moved in a historic bridge from Portersville to cross the creek.

sold their Ellettsville home for a condo on the west shore of Monroe Lake. They also bought a 27-foot powercruiser with a cabin. They keep it in a slip at Lake Monroe Marina in Cutright State Recreation Area. On calm, cool nights in the summer, they often find a quiet cove and spend the night on Monroe with their Australian shepherd-mix, Gus. Because their boat is too big to trailer easily, the couple stays on Monroe. But boating on the same lake every weekend hasn’t bothered them. “It’s such a big lake,” Andrea said. “But it’s really about the people you are with that make it so much fun.” Andrea and Matt have met some of their closest friends through boating. Pokagon State Park, nestled on the shores of Lake James, is a picturesque 1,260-acre park in extreme northeast Indiana complete with beaches, an interpretive nature center, cross country skiing, boat rental and guided horse rides plus the state’s only refrigerated toboggan. Potawatomi Inn offers two restaurants, library, cabin suites, gift shop and indoor pool. The Trine State Recreation Area is also a part of Pokagon State Park. Fort Ouiatenon (wee-ah-tehnon), named for the Wea tribes in the area, was established by the French in 1717 as a fur trading post. This park is home to a replica blockhouse, built in 1930 and was one of the earliest settlements in what was to become the state of Indiana. did not grow up in Indiana, but one of the things I love about living here is finding the unexpected. Never was that truer, for this Rocky Mountain native and former ski bum, than when I learned of Paoli Peaks and Perfect North Slopes. Yes, Indiana—the state presumably flat—has two of the Midwest’s best ski resorts right under our nose. Scientists say the hills of Southern Indiana were formed thousands of years ago when glaciers pushed down from the Great Lakes, flattening northern and central Indiana, creating hilly terrain in the Ohio River Valley. And with it, perfect slopes for skiing.

Paoli Peaks was first to emerge. Inspired by the tough winters of the late 1970s, Paoli physician, Dr. Richard Graber, thought a ski area was needed. Along with other professionals, he launched an investment option to finance building one. Shares were offered to anyone willing to buy. With roughly 300-400 original stockholders, land was purchased from several farmers in the hills between Paoli and French Lick. Included in it was 60 acres leased from Charles Marvin Weeks, who raised hogs, where the lodge sits today. Swiss-born Felix and Margrit Kagi were hired to manage the resort and build the actual slopes and lifts. When opening day

arrived, there were three trails, a quad chairlift, rope tow and 500 pairs of skis to rent. That first season, in 1978-79, no one predicted it would take off as it did. Rental skis sold out with lines forming to rent equipment as fast as it was returned. On the heels of Paoli Peaks record-breaking opening, just east of there, on the Ohio state line near Lawrenceburg, a similar story was unfolding. Clyde and Ella Mae Perfect had moved their family of five children from Ohio, to a farm nestled in the wooded hills outside Lawrenceburg, in 1966. Clyde was a brick contractor and part-time farmer. Little did they know their lives were about to change forever. Kelly Green grew up in Lawrenceburg and in 1979 was a student at Indiana State University, majoring in recreation, when he approached the Perfects with an idea. He had completed a college project citing their farm as the ideal spot for a ski resort. His findings were based on the farm’s location, with its north-facing slope, and proximity to a heavily populated area—Cincinnati. After giving it some thought, the Perfects agreed. And the winter of 198081, Perfect North Slopes saw its first ski season. Forty years later, Paoli Peaks and Perfect North Slopes are going strong, each taking pride in providing family-friendly winter recreation. Both feature the latest in snow-making equipment and offer late-night, lighted skiing for die-hard fans. Their clientele span from Northern Indiana as far south as Alabama and Georgia, who see the Indiana slopes as an affordable alternative, closer than those in Colorado. Proof that each resorts’ humble beginnings and risk-taking paid off. Perfect North Slopes has remained a family business, with eight members of the extended Perfect family on staff. Chip Perfect leads the team as General Manager. With 22 ski trails, from beginner to advanced, five chairlifts, six Magic Carpet conveyor lifts, two rope tows, two terrain parks and 23 tubing lanes, Kelly Green’s prediction has indeed been successful. “We wanted to start small and grow when we could,” says Marketing Director, Ellen Perfect. “In the beginning, we had

To put simply, planning a wedding can be stressful; especially if a bride is taking on the majority of the work on her own. At The Red Barn at Sycamore Farm, co-owners Chef Kris Kraut and his wife, Gretchen, make it their goal to keep the process as easy, and enjoyable as possible for their guests. The team guides brides toward their dream weddings, and provides elegant, elaborate, even eccentric décor and dining. At Sycamore Farm guests can choose to have the ceremony in the barn or gazebo. There is also a bridal suite upstairs in the farmhouse, and a second bedroom, with a connecting bathroom where guests can get ready right there on property. The parking lot also accommodates up to 130 vehicles. Beginning in January, the small family business will offer a pop-up restaurant so their brides and grooms can enjoy a rehearsal dinner on property, rather than seeking out an additional location. “The farmhouse is a perfect modern, rustic location for a rehearsal dinner,” commented Gretchen. “We can host roughly forty guests in the farmhouse. There are three different dining rooms on the main floor. This allows brides the chance to work with fewer vendors and have less stress for their big day.” The house was built in 1860, and the couple has kept the original charm that makes it so cozy. It is both beautiful and intimate; but it isn’t without its updates. “Everything is as original as it can be, just updated,” said Gretchen.

The chainsaws and chisels fire up on January 22, 2018 kicking off Richmond’s 5th annual Meltdown Winter Ice Festival. This event turns downtown Richmond into a wondrous destination where custom ice carvings, impressive ice competitions, lively winter activities, and fun collide—and it’s all FREE. Watch the ice fly as each internationally known, multiaward winning ice artists use their polished skills, imagination

At the Family Fun Zone, festival attendees can interact with various sculptures masterfully crafted entirely from ice, such as corn hole, ping pong, a slide and more. Other activities include a frozen fairy trail, paint and take souvenir, chili cookoff, frosty mug pub crawl, art show, food vendors and more. The main event is the no holds barred “Meltdown Throwdown” sculpting competitions between two ice carvers and 1200 lbs. of ice. These high-octane ice fights will take

Taken in 1932 during the construction of Rockefeller Center, Lunch atop a Skyscraper, the black and white iconic photograph shows 11 ironworkers sitting on a girder 840 feet above the streets of New York. Taking the photo and transforming it into life-size metal figures by world renowned artist Sergio Fernari, these construction workers now perch atop the roofline of Industrial Revolution Eatery & Grill near the campus of Valparaiso University in northern Indiana. It may seem quirky, but this homage to the power of American labor is all part of the upmarket eatery where the cheesecake comes in shades of red, white, and blue. “The concept was to create a place upscale, yet industrial, completely custom and hand-built with only steel and brick clinker materials,” says Mike Leeson, owner of the restaurant and also of Synergy Steel whose East Chicago, Indiana, plant fabricated everything needed to create this foundry-chic look.

Valparaiso University is a private university located in Valparaiso, Indiana. The university enrolls about 4,500 students from over 50 countries. Valpo consists of five undergraduate colleges, a graduate school, and a law school. It is the largest independent Lutheran university in the United States and is home to the second-largest collegiate chapel in the world, the Chapel of the Resurrection. The university was founded in 1859 as one of the first coeducation colleges in the United States. Offering more than 40 study-abroad programs

ON THE SQUARE Rolling Stonebaker, which started in a 1949 red Studebaker truck outfitted with a woodburning pizza oven capable of reaching almost 900 degrees and turning out thin crust pizzas in just a few minutes, opened its brick and mortar restaurant several years ago. They’re known for their unique combinations, like The Purple Pig, their signature pie, which is a dazzling purple and reddish brown pile of slow-roasted pork shoulder

and barbecue sauce topped with a tangy purple Cole slaw. And there’s The Potatohead —roasted garlic, wood roasted red potatoes, ricotta, mozzarella, provolone and red onion. Business is so good, that owners (and siblings) Andrea and Art Georgion are moving up— opening the roof top for dining. If you’re looking for a place to stay, Pikk’s Tavern, a 1940s themed Chicago steakhouse with an extensive wine list, offers two antique-filled rooms above their restaurants. Stock up on cheeses, wines and other edibles at Old World Market, buy fresh produce and local Saturday at the William E. Urschel Pavilion at Central Park Plaza and check out such boutiques as Lifestyles: The Gallery for a selection of home décor, accessories, jewelry and more. he table is set 24/7. The candle is lit at 6 o’clock every evening. But the guest never comes. He’s still missing, or he’s already gone. And the owners of The Tin Plate restaurant know that. That’s their point. The table honors military personnel who have sacrificed the ultimate: A few are still MIA (missing in action) or POWs (Prisoners of War), and many have died. It’s a way for restaurant owners Pat Rice and his son Patrick Rice to honor them and to encourage their diners to do so also. The Missing Man table has been set for less than three years – the restaurant opened in 2015 – but the Rices’ commitment to honoring the military goes back much further. Pat's Father is a US Army veteran. Pat was an Elwood police officer for 28 years. And Patrick’s service began when he was a youngster. Trumpet lessons in grade school led to his

He hasn’t stopped playing; he’s a member of Bugles Across America and still plays “Taps” at military funerals throughout Madison County. Patrick said, “I voluntarily play for as many military funerals as are called for so the family does not have to endure the military honors ceremony with a recording. It’s done live.” As for the restaurant, it’s something the father/son duo had thought about for a long time. Both had already been in the food industry for years, and they were looking for a location in early 2015 when

the building in Elwood’s American Tin Plate neighborhood came up for sale. There’s been a lot of remodeling – the new kitchen is much bigger than the original, for example – and there are already plans for an expansion to create a new bar and larger dining area. The Tin Plate’s breaded tenderloin rapidly became their signature dish; more than 18,000 were sold in 2017. Also popular are fried and battered cheese curds; ribbon fries loaded with pulled pork BBQ, shredded cheese, sour cream and jalapeños; and a roast beef Manhattan with red gravy. The father/son duo is big on backing Elwood. It started in 1962 when Pat, as a youngster, moved to the Madison County community when his dad was transferred here from their home in Connecticut. It was supposed to be for one year, but the

family never left. Patrick has lived in the community his entire life. In addition to honoring military personnel, the duo helps sponsor youth sports teams, school sports teams, sprint cars at Anderson speedway, the Tin Plate All-American Glass Festival Parade and local parades. Their restaurant is a mini museum of county heritage that includes the story of the American Tin Plate Company, once the world’s largest hot mill tin factory in the world. But always, in the forefront, is that homage to the military. “You’ll see a lot of restaurants set up a (Missing Man) table on Memorial Day or Veterans Day, then take it down,” Pat said. “Ours is there 24/7. Veterans have added items, including coins. “The quarters are very, very numbing,” Patrick said. “You never look at a quarter again the same way. It means you were with a soldier when he died in battle. Look at how many quarters are on the table.” The Rices credit Vietnam veteran Butch Lewis for setting up their Missing Man table. Through Lewis’ work, there’s an annual holiday party at the Veterans Administration hospital in Marion. The Tin Plate helps fund it through sales of its MIA/POW T-shirts. The Tin Plate – feeding souls as well as bodies – was named the 2017 Elwood Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year. It didn’t come from selling tenderloins.

Meet Three Rivers Distilling Co. in Fort Wayne. It’s northeast Indiana’s first artisan distillery. Fort Wayne’s first legal distillery since Prohibition. “Trail-blazing in this industry can be tough, but we’ve had great support,” co-owner Aaron Pence says. And so the new business, founded in 2016, is in the forefront of changing the face of

up, in school, in other jobs. They’ve put their mechanically-minded heads together to modify equipment and streamline processes. There are financial backgrounds, marketing backgrounds, engineering backgrounds, …. And that can-do attitude. Pence says three important pieces come together to produce quality spirits for this small-batch enterprise. Item No.1: ingredients. Grains are organic non-GMO corn, wheat, barley and rye from a farm in Lebanon, Ind. Three Rivers is committed to staying local as much as possible. The only non-Indiana ingredients are sugar cane and molasses for the rum. Waste grain, after fermentation, goes to a nearby farm to feed livestock. Item No. 2: barrels. “To make a quality bourbon, you have to have quality barrels,” Pence says. Right now there’s a huge shortage of barrels because of the explosive growth of the industry, and because the best barrels are made from oak that has been air seasoned for 42 months. Three Rivers’ barrels are made by a cooper who walked in one day and offered

Huge changes are forecast with the nearby General Electric campus, shuttered now but on its way to revitalizing the area as Electric Works, a re-use mix of retail, restaurant, hospitality, entertainment and residential offerings along with modern business incubation. “We want to be part of the growth of Fort Wayne,” Pence says. Three Rivers welcomes visitors to 224 E. Wallace St., an old bakery building with a new look and a new purpose. Its upscale comfort accompanies its distinctive spirits. Three Rivers is primarily veteran-owned, and it’s primarily veteran-operated. “We’re all very proud of our service,” Pence says. That’s big with these guys, who learned to count on one other when they were in the service. That bond extends to all veterans and actives. Somehow that story seems to find its way into just about every conversation that comes up here. Military training has come into play, along with additional skills learned while growing

his services. He’d just moved to Fort Wayne and wondered if Three Rivers might help him set up a business. The 5-gallon barrels he makes allows the distillers to accelerate the aging process. Item No. 3: equipment. The owners’ tinkering has simplified cleaning, hastened cooling times, encouraged modified recipes. Its new tasting/dining area with both inside and outside seating looks toward the southwest side of the downtown area. In addition to its own spirits, it offers soups, salads, sandwiches – foods that can be made without a deep fryer or oven. And there’s often live music. Despite its youth, Three Rivers has already won national and state awards for its vodka, gin and bourbon. It’s also got a coffee liqueur which Pence says “will shake up the industry.” “We military guys love black coffee,” Pence says. “That’s what we drink – black coffee.” So the liqueur has chocolate, vanilla, and the flavor and aroma of a bold, cold-brew coffee. “I truly believe our guys hit a home run with this.” There are also honors for its labeling that subtly features Fort Wayne’s three rivers and, sometimes, the military. Three Rivers’ products are already

available at more than 230 retail locations in Indiana and 40 in Kentucky. Many are showcased in area restaurants. “They’re big cheerleaders for us,” Pence says. Its first batch of rye whiskey was ready just before Thanksgiving. The facility manager, a Vietnam-era veteran, typically labels the bottles, so they asked him to put the label on that first bottle. That’s when he saw its name: Franklin B. rye whiskey. “Wow!” Franklin Bruce Mevis exclaimed, then added a few other expressions. Despite misty eyes, he affixed the label perfectly, then grabbed a pen and autographed it. It’s the first product Three Rivers has ever named in honor of anyone.
