Used Railroad Tie-Cresote Treated (Common: 7 in. x 9 in. x 8 ft.; Actual: 96 in.)

The product is very hardy - if you plan to cut them and or drill through them be sure that you have extra chainsaw chains and or drill bits. They are TOUGH!!!

I set these down into the ground and use them to line the border of the yard so as to keep street water runoff in the street. Two of the ties had become hollow shells over time and needed replacing. I had put this off as my last experience with cross ties several years ago when I was in my 50's yielded a double hernia. Nevertheless, I bought three as another one is starting to split. The guys at the store were most helpful in loading them onto my trailer, even as an electrical storm was starting to overtake us. I was given the chance to reject any I didn't like but all appeared to be very solid. Back home I worked smart by sliding each off the trailer adjacent to the one that was being replaced, and the third was left alongside the drive. All 3 were as solid as they appeared and I have no doubt they will not have to be replaced again in my lifetime. I similarly use old 6x6 sign posts to line the drive and based on the quality of these ties, I will use them along the drive when those timbers need replacing.

The railroad ties are very solid, heavy and the soaked heavily in creosote. Very handy for dirt/rock retainer walls,,fencing and flower beds. I have used then in both fencing and flower beds and they have lasted about 25 years before finally showing signs of rot... Much better then even PT wood posts. It does take two people to move these ties as they are very heavy but that makes them last a long time. I am using these new ones as replacements in flower beds.

Railroad ties vary in condition. What I have learned so far is that they are graded according to condition. Relay is good enough to go back onto a railroad track. Premium is the next best, with 3-4 good sides. #1 Landscape has 3-4 good sides and some splitting. #2 Landscape has 1-2 good sides and can have some rot. All the RR ties at the store were in similar condition, with one useable side and some splitting or rot. The grade you want depends on your use. If you can go to the store in person and select your ties I recommend that over having them delivered. The employees who helped me at the store were patient and sorted through the stack to find 3 that were passable. Remember these are used! They will all vary. And they are heavy. If you are transporting them you might want to line your vehicle with something to protect your vehicle. I fit 3 ties into a Suburban and I used plastic and cardboard to protect the seats. It was after my purchase that I learned about the different grades, and it looks like Home Depot charges about twice as much as a smaller supplier for the grade they had in stock. But for my use these will work and Home Depot was a lot closer to me than the other supplier.

Excellent product to line out my driveway and can be easily stacked together. Lock them together with rebar drilled through the top to hold and you will have a solid retaining wall.

The ties were not of uniform size. I had to painstakingly sort them into two piles based on size. And 3 of the ties were badly damaged and should never have been offered for sale. Out of 40 ties, 9 were not as advertised.

They picked out 4 for me. They should have said that no decent ones were left. Unfortunately, I didn't look closely before loading on my car. Two broke when I dropped them off the car at home - rotten inside and on the bottom where I did not look. I tried to get a refund without having to reload them and drive them all the way back, but no. The one in the picture was the best of the 4. Notice the bottom where it is only half thick. The other was only useful as edging. Railroad ties are getting to be hard to find, but don't find them here! I wish some other supplier was open the day I needed these.
