Maria Shriver, 64, looks impressively youthful with new highlights as she hosts the Women's Alzheimer's Movement luncheon

Maria Shriver has become heavily involved with charity since stepping back from her job as a TV news journalist in 2004.

And the estranged wife of Terminator actor Arnold Schwarzenegger has made some smart moves when it comes to helping those in need.

On Tuesday the 64-year-old beauty looked stylish in black with some pretty highlights to her usually dark mane as she hosted The Women's Alzheimer's Movement luncheon in New York City.

Grants were awarded to researchers who are on the cutting edge of brain science and are committed to developing treatments or the means of prevention to eradicate Alzheimer's Disease. 

The star is mother to four children: Katherine, who is wed to Chris Pratt, Patrick, an actor, Christina, who graduated from Georgetown University, and Christopher who went to University of Michigan.

Shriver started researching Alzheimer's disease after her father Sargent's diagnosis.

He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2003.

He had quite the resume: he was the founding director of the Peace Corps, part of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, director of various War on Poverty programs, head of the Special Olympics, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

After Alzeheimer's hit, she had to introduce herself to him as he could not remember who she was.

'I didn't know that much about Alzheimer's,' she has said.

'No one could answer my questions, like "Why is this happening?" and "What can be done to address the changes Alzheimer's brings?"'

So she started asking questions and did a ton of research.

She wrote the children's book What's Happening to Grandpa? in 2004 that explained Alzheimer's disease to kids.

Shriver also took her cause public when she testified in front of the US Senate Special Committee on Aging. 

She urged Congress to invest more money in finding drugs to treat or prevent Alzheimer's disease. 

She then produced an HBO docu special called The Alzheimer's Project.  

In May 2016, Shriver organized the Move for Minds Challenge at Equinox Sports Clubs. 'I wanted to illustrate that Alzheimer's can impact young, vital people who are active and still have a lot of life to live,' Shriver said, 'so I brought people together to focus on the disease in a space they wouldn't ordinarily expect.'
