- UngraphicsNapa Valley, California11 contributionsAdd this to you bucket listImagine visiting the Plaza de Espana in Sevilla, Spain during the Festival of Sevilla in April of 2023. The gardens are filled with a variety of plants and trees, with the sweet scent of orange blossoms in the air. Visitors can rent a rowboat and lazily float down a short stream or hire a horse and carriage for a leisurely ride. The highlight of the visit is the stunning building with its many tiled alcoves, each representing a different province of Spain. The street performers doing traditional Spanish Flamenco steal the show with great dancing and guitar performances that rival any paid tourist trap theater in the area. This experience is a must-see for anyone visiting Seville.Visited April 2023Written April 25, 2023
- 23ritaDavie, Florida573 contributionsMAGNIFICENT !!!Architecturally speaking, this site c 1928 is simply magnificent!!!......a real feast for the senses and amazing photo ops!! The site is a mix of Art Deco, Baroque Revival, Moorish Revival and Renaissance Revival design. There are many gorgeous tiled alcoves designed in tribute to cities and regions in Spain. We saw a few Flamenco dancers while visiting and also visitors taking carriage rides. Nearby is Maria Luisa Park and Plaza de America which are also wonderful to visit !Visited April 2023Written April 28, 2023
- Margaret TSt. Andrews, United Kingdom30 contributionsEssential viewing in a first trip to SevilleWhatever time of day you visit Plaza de España, it is truly breathtaking! The sheer size of the plaza makes it feel that it’s never crowded, even if it is the most popular place to visit in Seville. If you’re from Spain, don’t miss finding the section dedicated to each province with tiles dedicated to history. It’s a must see on a trip to Seville, but I wouldn’t recommend you have to stay for hours! There was lots of flamenco dancing going on when I visited on a sunny Sunday April afternoon. Altogether pleasant - but bring water! And look for the shade!Visited April 2023Traveled soloWritten May 2, 2023
- Brandon BLondon, United Kingdom229 contributionsA must-seeWe were treated to a free Flamenco performance by some very talented Spanish dancers on the steps of the central plaza. We very much enjoyed the music and dance and walked around the plaza, however we were mercilessly pursued by swarms of gnats the entire time! Probably breathed in a couple hundred that day! Too many gnats - but amazing place!Visited April 2023Written May 5, 2023

- YY220San Jose, California424 contributionsdon't miss this even if you only have very limited time in SevilleIMHO this is the #1 scene in Seville -- I am not saying the others are not good, but they are not so unique after you have seen so many other churches, cathedrals, squares, towers, and palaces in other parts of Spain, especially after seeing Alhambra. But this is one place you wouldn't find anywhere else that makes Seville worth visiting. So you can skip any other places if you are short on time, but not here.Visited May 2023Written May 18, 2023
- themannfamily1Sutton Bridge, United Kingdom59 contributionsBeautiful place to visit.....the Spanish Venice! We visited in May and was in awe of the beautiful buildings and the rowing lake. It was absolutely stunning. The bridges over the lake were so ornate and had been tiled with love. There were 52 mosaic tiled areas to represent the 52 Spanish provinces. Well worth a visit and a walk through the surrounding park areas.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 31, 2023

Nice enough square made for Hispano-American exhibition in the 1920s. There are murals around the outside depicting Spanish cities with a famous moment in their history and the city’s crest. Most people seem to take a row boat around the little river (€6 for boat of up to four people for 45 minutes, €10 if you end up going over). You can also hire bikes or pedal cars to go around the park - a great place for a picnic. A few stalls selling drinks but not much in the way of eateries

First stop: Plaza de España. In the early morning sun our assembled group passed through the Puerta de Aragon, an impressive tiled entrance to the Plaza de España, a stunning, expansive plaza built in the 1920s when Seville hosted the Ibero-American Exposition World’s Fair. This semicircular architectural style is a beautiful revival of the Mudejar style of Spain as well as Renaissance styles with a few nods to Art Deco. The elliptical shape, flanked by two impressive towers, represents Spain as a mother embracing its ancient colonies. The entrance, bridges and walls are elaborately detailed in colorful mosaic tiles, some that depict regions of Spain and its union with America. While we were there I photographed a bride and her groom as they were embracing the magic of this place.

The scale and well preserved nature of this elaborate building really have to been seen to be believed.
It looks to be a very well looked after building ie very well maintained with no real sense of faded glory.
In a way, at least in one regard, coronavirus did us a favour - we saw it a few years ago when it was moderately busy. However, in the early evening of 10th July 2020 it was incredibly quiet - and thereby all the more impressive.
For anyone who has seen the film Lawrence of Arabia, there will be the added interest of the fact that this building and the surrounding area were used, rather convincingly, to represent British Army HQ in Cairo in around 1916.
On both visits we only saw it from the outside - but didn’t feel that we had missed out!

I'd obviously seen the photos and in real life it doesn't disappoint and I took lots of photographs of this beautiful building against the bright blue sky of a perfect Sevilla winter's day.
The areas around the plaza are just as interesting and photogenic and we spent hours strolling round.
It was heaving though, I could appreciate what a guide had said about tourism being a big deal to the local economy

A real pleasure to walk around and if you're lucky watch some flamenco dancing. The lady at tourist information said that the best time to visit is at sunset as the red brickwork takes on a magnificent hue. We'll have to take her word for it!

During our time in Seville, my wife and I visited this huge complex which is a hub of so much activity. Visitors can enter through one of the four gates—we entered through Puerta De Aragon. Once inside there is a site map that describes this site which was completed in 1928. The combination of vintage Spanish style and art deco is evident throughout the complex. There were lots of detailed tile work along the walls as well as bridges over a moat. As I walked around, I noted that there were alcoves dedicated to all of Spain’s provinces.
Though most of the buildings which comprise the semi-circle structure are used by the government there is much to see outside for the large number of visitors. There are boat rides available as well as horse driven carriages for hire. Visitors can also just enjoy walking around the complex and looking at the detailed tile work. With so much so see outside, this is a place best enjoyed in good weather. However, part of the buildings have been converted to museums, so they are a good option in case of bad weather.
We were able to visit in the morning before it got too busy. Because of its size, even if there are a lot of visitors, it won’t detract from enjoying the site.

The most beautiful place in Seville. It’s absolutely stunning and such a peaceful place to be (despite it usually being busy). It’s also very clean and the gardens are lovely,
The architecture is incredible, absolutely stunning - both the brickwork and the tiling.
Very often there will be flamenco and live music so make sure you have coins/notes to put into the hat - they are amazing and deserve to be paid for their skill and performance.

In a city with so many "must-see" places, it's hard to rate one above the other. Plaza de España is probably the most photographed location in Sevilla, and deservedly so; it's beautiful. Plaza de España certainly lived up to my expectations, and even exceeded it; which is difficult to do with extremely popular places.
So much has been said about this place, which many may recognize from the films Lawrence of Arabia and The Phantom Menace, that I'll save you from more descriptions. It's a wonderful place to visit, to wander, to relax, and to contemplate.
You may be lucky enough to happen across some Flamenco while you are there; we were, and while it may seem a touristy thing to do, rowing a boat through the water feature (6 euro) was a fun part of our experience, and gave us a different perspective of Plaza de España.
It's especially magical when the sun is low in the sky and the reds and oranges of building really glow.

Having visited Seville many times, the Plaza de Espana is always a great place to come back to. Spain's history is fascinating and the colourful tiled pictorials below the arcades tell wonderful stories of battles and conquests.
There are small rowing boats on the surrounding canal!
While we were there, Street Musicians entertained the crowd with fabulous authentic Flamenco dancing and guitars.
An impressive plaza well worth visiting.

If you are in Sevilla, do not miss Plaza de Espana! It is as beautiful as any place in any European city. Don't be surprised if you see some impromptu Flamenco dancing while you're there. A good time to visit is in the late afternoon, when the light is magical.

It is not really an area for picnics or ball games but there are numerous parklands and public spaces in Seville that are conducive to this
Is there flamenco dancing often? At what time? 🤔

No need to book with any one. It is free and easy to get to. You may try searching for free tours. Something they do here in Europe there is no initial cost but you are compelled to provide a tip as the quality of these tours is excellent.
