Rice University, located in the heart of Houston’s Museum District, offers a dynamic student life in the nation’s fourth-largest city. The Rice Coffeehouse, Valhalla Pub and Willy’s Pub are all student-run institutions offering on-campus food and drink. Before stepping foot on campus, all students are assigned to one of 11 residential colleges, of which they remain members even if they decide to move off campus. The residential colleges provide housing, dining, and academic and social events. The Rice Owls boast 14 varsity NCAA Division I athletic teams and are well known for their strong baseball program. Students receive free tickets to all varsity athletic events.
Rice is comprised of eight schools, including the School of Social Sciences, School of Humanities and Wiess School of Natural Sciences. Its graduate schools include the highly ranked Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business and George R. Brown School of Engineering. Rice also has a well-regarded School of Architecture and the Shepherd School of Music. Rice is home to the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, a nonpartisan think tank, which offers coursework, internships and lectures. When a private detective found Rice’s stolen owl mascot at rival school Texas A&M in 1917, he sent a coded message back to Rice students letting them know that "Sammy" was OK, thus bestowing a name on the school’s mascot.

From the School
What if your next four years exceeded all expectations? Rice University sits in the heart of Houston on a 300-acre, tree-lined campus next to the Texas Medical Center and the Houston Museum District. As a top-tier research institution, we offer more than 50 majors across seven schools of study where students have the freedom and ability to choose their own path. From your first semester on campus, no matter your major, you'll have the opportunity to conduct research alongside experts. You'll be able to apply your skills, gain valuable professional experience and interact with industry leaders as you address real-world issues. Bright, curious and diverse, our students have a thirst for knowledge and a desire to shape the world around them.
Our student life begins with our residential colleges, where we randomly sort new students and where they stay throughout their time at Rice. Because each student is randomly assigned and stays in the same college throughout their undergraduate years, the diversity of our student body creates a rich tapestry of traditions, culture, and, most importantly, community. And by focusing on a culture of care, students find support from their peers resulting in an environment of collaboration over competition.
And at Rice, we believe that talent deserves opportunity, which is why with generous financial aid policies, more students have access to the aid they need. We strive to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to pursue a Rice education, starting with The Rice Investment, our signature financial aid program. The Rice Investment is an investment in the promise of all students who demonstrate talent, initiative and drive to positively impact the world. Rice is one of a select number of institutions that admits students based on academic merit rather than ability to pay. Rice also meets 100 percent of demonstrated need for admitted students through financial aid, regardless of whether they qualify for The Rice Investment.
This combination of excellence in academics, a vibrant and caring student life and our commitment to access and affordability forms the heart of Rice University.

At Rice, students from diverse academic backgrounds and career interests can take unique cross-disciplinary classes such as the Big Questions courses which examine enduring and not-so-straightforward topics. Students have delved into thought-provoking questions like “What is Love?” and “What is an (Ab)Normal Body?” These courses demonstrate how humanistic and artistic inquiry can help us make sense of our world and the daily dilemmas we face.

THE BEST SCHOOL EVER! Couldn't have asked to be admitted in a better, and more student-friendly school. Top-notch for almost anything one can name, and most certain to make one's careers and future bright. It is the underdog and for me, an IVY PLUS! The campus, the life, the pre-arrival guidance, everything speaks for itself and is a marvel of its own. Let's go OWLS!!
