Hiya Reddit, some of you may have seen me floating in and out of here talking occasional nonsense, but this is about BOOKS not nonsense (some nonsense may be unavoidable. Also, probably a lot of digressing, but I digress…). I’m the author of THE WOUNDED KINGDOM books; which are basically fantasy murder-mysteries that tell the over-arching story of the assassin Girton Club-Foot (except he doesn’t do much assassining, he’s more of a detective. Though TBH, he’s a very bad one) and his master Merela Karn over a period of about twenty years, and if readers are to be believed it will leave you a sobbing mess on the bus.
Job done.
But... I’m not here because of that I’m here because of my new novel, THE BONE SHIPS. There is a clue in the title as to what it’s about. SHIPS! BONES! WEIRD BIRD CREATURE THINGS! DRAGONS THE SIZE OF CITIES! SWASHBUCKLING! FOUND FAMILIES! BETRAYAL!
In THE BONE SHIPS we follow Joron Twiner as he comes under the wing of ‘Lucky’ Meas Gilbryn, the fiercest and best commander in the Hundred Isles. It is, in many ways, a more ambitious book than the Wounded Kingdom ones which were set in a more familiar medieval fantasy world. The Bone Ships is set in a world built from the ground up, full of new things and terms and language and it’s told in a bit of a lyrical style; maybe it asks the reader to commit a bit more that my previous books. But you’re all cool with that, right?
Right?
I really hope so.
But when it boils down to it, The Bone Ships is about what I love most, it’s about people and about second chances and as the three books go on it will grow and grow into something I hope people will love reading as much as I am loving writing it. Robin Hobb, an actual fantasy god, called The Bone Ships “brilliant,” so you should take advantage of this AMA as obviously these books will be the last things I ever write, cos what’s the point now? It doesn’t get much better than that, does it?
What else can I tell you about me? I have really long hair. I’m a very silly person who, for some bizarre reason, writes quite serious books (which may cause a bit of cognitive dissonance). I live in Yorkshire, the UK, in a really old house full of dead things. Well, taxidermy, we’ve not just got corpses lying around as that would be unhygenic and we have a child. There’s also a lot of odd art here, and very noisy music, and country music, which surprises people. I AM THE KNIG OF TYPOS.
So, fantasy Redditors, ASK ME ANYTHING, doesn’t matter if you know my work or not, I just like to chat, and if I don’t know the answer I’ll make something up and at least attempt to be entertaining.
Have at it.
(P.S. Everyone calls me RJ, so just go with that.)
