‘Outlander’ Season 6 Is Now Filming: Here’s Everything We Know

Outlander is gearing up for Season 6. The hit drama has officially begun production on its latest season in Scotland, Starz announced today, with Sam Claflin and Caitriona Balfe returning and Jamie and Claire. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Outlander had to push production on Season 6, which was originally set to begin in May 2020.

Along with this morning’s announcement, Starz shared some behind the scenes looks at the upcoming season, which sees the continuation of author Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series. In a short clip released today, Starz gave us a gimpse into the preparation for Season 6, including the costumes, props and sets that go into crafting 18th century Scotland.

We know Outlander is returning for Season 6, and we now know it’s finally filming new episodes, but what is Season 6 about? When will it premiere? And is it the final season of Outlander? Here’s everything we know about Outlander Season 6.

WHAT IS OUTLANDER SEASON 6 ABOUT?

When Outlander returns for Season 6, we’ll see the continuation of Jamie and Claire’s story. The next installment in the series, which is based on Gabaldon’s book “A Breath of Snow and Ashes,” follows the couple as they find a new home in colonial America. While attempting to settle down in North Carolina, Claire knows she and Jamie are about to be caught up in the Revolution. While they’ve built their own home a Fraser’s Ridge, they’re now tasked with defending it from both “external forces” and “increasing strife and conflict” rising up around them.

“If Season 4 asked ‘What is home?’ and Season 5 asked, ‘What are you willing to do to protect your home?’ then Season 6 explores what happens when there is disharmony and division among the inhabitants of the home you’ve created: when you become an outsider, or an ‘outlander,’ so to speak, marginalized and rejected in your own home,” Starz shared in a press release today.

HOW MANY EPISODES WILL BE IN OUTLANDER SEASON 6?

Season 6 of Outlander will have 12 episodes, a number consistent with previous seasons of the Starz drama.

WHEN WILL OUTLANDER SEASON 6 PREMIERE ON STARZ?

While Starz has not announced an official premiere date for the next season of Outlander, we can make a guess based on previous seasons. The most recent season, Season 5, began filming in April 2019 and premiered on Starz in February 2020.  Because of production delays caused by the coronavirus, Season 6 will premiere later than planned, but it’s likely we’ll see it sometime later this year or in early 2022.

IS SEASON 6 THE FINAL SEASON OF OUTLANDER?

Starz has not renewed Outlander for Season 7 yet, but that doesn’t mean the show is ending after Season 6. For one, Gabaldon still has two books left in her series: “An Echo in the Bone” and “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.” Plus, executive producer Maril Davis shared on Twitter that “We are not aware that this [Season 6] is the last season … But we don’t have any additional seasons picked up yet.” So, the future of Outlander after Season 6 is still undetermined, but don’t lose hope just yet — Season 7 could very well be coming in the next couple years.
