As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, December is shaping up to be a month filled with movies and TV shows. While movie theaters continue to showcase new releases, most blockbusters and Oscar hopefuls are moving to streaming platforms or waiting until 2021.

Thankfully, January looks like another great month for streaming, as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime will bring plenty of new releases, including plenty of holiday movies and specials.

Here’s the full list of new movies and TV shows arriving on the three platforms in January, as well as our must-watch picks from each company.

Top Pick: “Young Adult”

One of the more underrated films of the 2010s, “Young Adult” stars Charlize Theron (“Monster”) as an writer with alcoholism who decides to return to her hometown in an attempt to seduce her now-married high school flame (Patrick Wilson, “Insidious”). Back in town, she bonds with a high school outcast (Patton Oswalt, “The King of Queens”) who attempts to dissuade her from her home-wrecking mission. With a screenplay written by Diablo Cody (“Juno”), every line Theron delivers is pure acid, but even as you grow to hate the “psychotic prom queen,” as one former classmate dubs her, you can’t look away.

Movies

Top pick: “The Naked Gun”

Plenty of great films arrive on Netflix this month, including Martin Scorsese’s crime epoch “Goodfellas” and Harmony Korine’s deranged morality tale “Spring Breakers.” But if you’re like many of us and prefer some lighter fare right now, there’s no funnier option than 1988’s “The Naked Gun,” which features an all-time performance from comic maestro Leslie Nielsen (“Airplane!”) as bumbling detective Frank Drebin. As he prepares for the arrival of the Queen of England to Los Angeles and attempts to unravel a waterfront shooting, the ratio of gags per minute Drebin provides is second to none.

Top pick: “Cobra Kai”: Season 3

More than 30 years after the events of 1984’s “The Karate Kid,” the main characters from the film are at markedly different points in their lives in “Cobra Kai,” originally created for subscription service YouTube Red. Netflix acquired the first two seasons of the series earlier this year, which follows “Karate Kid” bad guy Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) as he gets his life back together by reopening the Cobra Kai karate dojo. Season three, which brings together friends and foes both old and new, arrives Jan. 1 on Netflix.

Top Pick: “One Night in Miami”

Based on the 2013 play by the same name, “One Night in Miami” is a fictionalized account of a real-life meeting in a Miami hotel room between four Black American icons: Boxer Cassius Clay (Eli Goree, “Race”), civil rights leader Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir, “The OA”), NFL running back Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge, “City on a Hill”), and singer-songwriter Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr., “Hamilton”). The film already made history earlier this year when it became the first movie to premiere at the Venice Film Festival directed by a Black woman (Regina King, “Watchmen”), and early reviews are almost universally positive, with many tapping it as an early Academy Awards contender. Currently playing in a limited number of theaters, “One Night in Miami” lands Jan. 15 on Prime Video.

Top pick: “Dexter”: Seasons 1-8

“Dexter” ended on a sour note after eight seasons back in 2013, which makes the news that Showtime is reviving the crime drama for a ninth season welcome news. Despite the thoroughly mediocre eighth season, there’s plenty to be enjoyed before then, with highlights including the first season, which  introduces viewers to Miami PD forensics analyst and secret vigilante killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall, “Six Feet Under”), and the fourth season, which gives him a formidable nemesis in the form of the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow, “3rd Rock From the Sun”).
