Hallmark Christmas movie season is in full swing, and the latest film from the holiday powerhouse this weekend is Christmas in Vienna, a festive love story about concert violinist Jess (Sarah Drew) and American diplomat Mark (Brennan Elliott). After Jess is invited to perform at the Vienna Music Hall’s prestigious Christmas Eve concert, she travels to Vienna two weeks early to visit her friend Tori, who is cousins with Mark and is a nanny to his children. Jess forms a special bond with Mark’s children when she agrees to watch them so Tori can sell crafts at the Christmas market, but she also forms a lasting connection with Mark.
We know the film takes place in the Austrian city, but where was Christmas in Vienna filmed? Turns out, Hallmark stayed true to the title and filmed right on location in Vienna. Drew told Hallmark’s Home & Family in September, “It was one of those once in a lifetime experiences I think. We were shooting in December, leading up to Christmas, walking down the actual Christmas marketplaces.”
And it sounds like the production team had their work cut out for them in the festive city. “That’s not set decorations, that’s what it looked like,” Drew explained. “The only thing we had to add was snow sometimes.” Christmas in Vienna also filmed at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, where they climbed to the top of bell tower, and in Vienna’s famous Riesenrad ferris wheel, as well as the city’s bustling marketplaces. “We literally didn’t have to decorate because everything was decorated for the holidays,” Drew said. “We were working in the middle of actual shoppers from all over the world. So it was incredible.”
The festive film’s final scene takes place at the Mayor’s Office, which has a large ice skating rink outside. Elliott told Hallmark skating there was like “going through a labyrinth” with all of the twisting ice paths and trails. “We had people skating who were just regular people out skating and it was part of the scene,” he added. In a behind-the-scenes video, he tells the camera, “We’re in Vienna ice skating. How could you not love this?”
