After 2 years in development, my map just got released today! It's an epic adventure map with puzzles, combat, parkour, and a boss fight. Welcome to The Curse of Starry Isle! (Links in the comments)
Download link to the map. (1.12)
It's also available on realms! It just got released on there today. Here's a blog post about it.
This map has been a passion project of mine for the last couple of years. I'm going to keep this short and sweet, so if you guys have any questions just ask.
The Curse of Starry Isle is essentially a classic CTM map, but it has some unique mechanics for you to discover. It features a huge map to lose yourself in, and many challenges await if you are to lift the curse. I don't want to spoil too much, so good luck in your adventure!
Hey, is it single-player only or can I play it with friends?
What is the suggested resource pack to run to best enjoy the aesthetics? ( Ex. I use black concrete to make hidden doorways that are actually really bright -no mobs- this illusion disappears if I use anything other than default or Faithful 32x)
I personally use vanilla textures when playing the map, since that's what I built it in. I'm not well versed in resource packs, and I haven't really explored enough options to give you a satisfying answer. All I can say for sure though, is that I like the look it gives in vanilla :)
It's kind of fun to think about what the most ascetic resource pack would be, but I'm pretty sure you meant "aesthetics". Something that's ascetic is very simple and plain, and an ascetic is someone who's sworn off any luxury.
don´t now if my toaster of computer can handle it :/ but will try anyway
It's a 21mb download, but the commands aren't too intense. Most computers should be able to handle it. Nevertheless, enjoy!
any recomended texture pack?
I built the map with vanilla textures in mind, but feel free to try whatever texture pack you like :)
You just sold me. Too many people rely on texture packs. So by being available in realms that means it’s available in bedrock across all systems??? O_O
Unfortunately not, since the coding is completely different on Bedrock, none of the commands would work. So as of now, it's just on Java Edition.
But yeah, I completely agree on your point about texture packs. It was a pretty unique challenge to overcome, but I'm glad I stuck with vanilla in the end.

I bought Minecraft 3 days ago. Of course I know everything since I watched a lot of youtubers for 3 years.
Gulp. I don't know if I can finish the purple parkour dungeon the other guy talked about.
Well. I downloaded it, the details are awesome! Only it gives me an Fps of 3 at times, maxing out at 7.
My computer IS a toaster. Maybe I will complete it.
If you're new to Minecraft I would definitely recommend downloading a mod called Optifine. It essentially boosts your FPS and it doesn't cause conflicts with anything else. Now, I doubt it would increase your performance enough to play the map smoothly, but it's definitely something you should look into for the future.
The map can also be quite tricky at some parts, especially the parkour. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, but if you manage to boost your FPS enough to play, you're more than welcome to beat the map and prove me wrong :)
Is this map recommended for solo play or is it co-op compatible?
I would recommend any number of players from 1-6. However, with more than 6 players the loot tends to be too sparse and divided. But it's technically playable with any number of players.
Awesome, thank you.
Does it work on bukkit-like servers?
I'm really not sure. As long as there aren't any plugins/mods on the server, and command blocks are enabled, I think it should work. But I can't promise anything, especially if there are conflicts/bugs because of it.
Ok, thank you
[removed]
Nope, it's in adventure mode. The map can't be fully reset, but it can be explored after completion. No plugins needed :)
Aaaaaaaaand bookmarked
[removed]
I just finished playing it, and I really, really enjoy it!
Pros -such a pretty map -good gameplay -really cool final boss
Cons -maybe a lack of food sources? -i think it was the purple dungeon where there was a parkour course where the floor would tp you back to the start. some of the skeletons fell on the ground and my bow broke so I had to pull some fishing rods shenanigans to stop them from annoying me.
10/10 map, thanks for making this! :)
Great to hear! Thanks for playing. Yeah that purple dungeon can be irritating with the amount of parkour and archery required, especially depending on the order you complete the dungeons in. Appreciate the feedback :)
I recommend lowering your FOV while. Taking screenshots. Looks normal to you but many aren't adjusted to it. I too play as a quake pro.
Yeah agreed. Point noted for next time!
I'll stick to my Quake Pro!
I tried to get a friend to set this up but he says "nothing happens when he presses the begin button". Are we missing anything? The server's completely vanilla by the way.
Is it possible to play this over LAN?
It should be, yeah. The map should work in singleplayer, LAN, and multiplayer as long as it's vanilla and commands are enabled :)
Cool thanks, I'll try it out with my sister soon
Thanks for the awesome adventure map! I just finished playing the game, and I really enjoyed it. I haven't played adventure maps like this before.
The scenery was breathtaking - I especially liked the blue shard's castle and the purple shard's "nether" palace.
Even though it was fun exploring the map, I kind of have to say that I disliked the parkour part for the blue shard. After trying to pass the two uppermost jumps (green & yellow) without success over ~50 times (even with the jump boost potions), I had to cheat and give myself the levitation effect. I think it could have been made either easier or the checkpoint could have been next to the difficult jump.
Great! It's so satisfying to hear that people enjoy something that I put so much time into. Also, point noted about the parkour difficulty, I'll definitely take that into account for my next map. Thanks for playing!
I'm just curious what this area looks like up close. Like, how is there so much variation in the grass? Is it a mix of concrete and wool or something?
Hopefully this clears things up for you. I used a rendering program called Chunky to take a picture of the entire island there, since normal screenshots can't do that. I think it looks weird in the render because that's just how the program renders tall grass I guess.
I wish the Yogscast would play this.
would this work on MCPE / WIN10?
No, it's for the Java edition of the game. Sorry!
The map looks really cool! And a big congratulations on getting it on Realms and mentioned on the MC blog! I'm sure it's awesome to finish a project like this that you've been working on for so long. I'm going to download and give it a try!
Yeah, it's been a really rewarding experience overall. Thanks for the kind words :)
Looks awesome. Well done dude :)
What editing programs did you use to make this map or was it all by hand in creative?
I used a combination of VoxelSniper and WorldEdit for the terrain, then the structures were obviously all by hand.
I’ll definitely have to check it out, 2 years? Sounds like a with a lot of work put in it.
Hey out of curiosity, do you think it'll work on a server that's been spigotted?
I'm honestly not sure how well command blocks work on a Spigot server. If they are enabled in the server properties folder then I can't see any reason why the map wouldn't work. However, Spigot might cause some conflicts with command blocks that I'm unaware of. Sorry I can't be of any more help.
That's fine. I will know soon enough.
I believe it will, the /kill command never worked correctly (on my server) until I found out it was now /minecraft:kill
Not sure if it was spigot or Essentials, but either might cause problems if you have kill commands in the map.
Where we droppin bois
How large is it?
I don't really remember the exact measurements, but it should be just about 1000x1000 blocks, maybe a little less?
currently have the blue infinity stone- I MEAN SHARD
pretty good map so far

Responses like yours are one of the big reasons I make this stuff, thanks for the kind words. Also, hope you have fun with the map!
REVIEW OF "THE CURSE OF STARRY ISLE"
OVERALL Well worth the download and time!
CONS:
-
MOST of the ornate pathways are void of all half slabs and stairs (lots of jumping)
-
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT is a MUST (there are EXTREMELY few quest items) a chunk of time was spend consolidating chest contents to the horse sable. While the variety of food is entertaining it doesn't add to the game play, just makes inventory management more tedious.
-
RESPAWNING ENEMIES It appears u/AdamDJM took a page out of the old Zelda games, you can take your time and snipe those pesky blazes and ghast, but don't waste your time, they'll jut be back. RESPAWNING ENEMIES makes it difficult to appreciate the IMMENSE amount of work you've put into it! / Exploration in the 'dungeons' isn't fun/feasible when constantly under attack.
-
Post game, players are encouraged to explore, they are unable to do so using spectator or creative. I know that I wanted to fly above and around to take in all the sights. (Unless you take out the 2 specific command blocks with MCEdit...got to find those first)
-
Little to no guide as to 'how'/'where' one should progress / EXTREMELY simple goals (there are 4 of them)
-
Some animations weren't witnessed as the players attention wasn't directed to the action.
-
The island has EXTREMELY FEW WAYS TO GET OUT OF THE WATER....DON"T FALL INTO THE 'OCEAN', else you'll have a SSSSSUUUUUPPPPEEEEERRRR long way around to finding somewhere you can jump out.
-
The Island 'ledge' surrounding the perimeter is extensive though void of any purpose...I'd have cut off that ledge to remove the speculation of 'something is around this edge!'
PROS:
-
FLIPPIN' AMAZING WORLD! Beautiful! If you've got shaders, run 'em. If you're on PC, and it can handle it Turn up the render distance to 40 or MORE! The mountains in the distant are beautiful.
-
AMAZING ANIMATIONS It takes a LOT of work to build each frame and have it work as intended.
-
Robust Commands / Streamlined Commands This map has JUST enough commands to make everything work as it does. There's no messy wiring or horrific execution of logic.
-
The 'side treasures' are entertaining and MOST are easy to understand.
-
FLAWLESS EXECUTIONS ... I didn't get trapped anywhere, or get stuck, nor did any NPC behave in an unintended way.
-
CAN NOT EXPRESS ENOUGH How beautiful this world is. Take the time, remove those 2 'set gamemode to adventure' command blocks and EXPLORE THIS BEAUTY!
-
LITTLE TO NO REDSTONE/WATER/ENTITY Mechanics This map will be playable for YEARS.
-
EXPLORATION IS REWARDED ... most of the time. Go off the path, see who or what is roaming out and about, they'll be there to help.
-
NO TRIAL AND ERROR PUZZLES There was NO 'figure it out by dying a bunch of times.' You can look ahead, plan your attack and get through it!
-
PARKOUR wasn't super tedious, spawn points were place almost/just frequent enough.
-
LORE/WRITTEN BOOKS were appropriate, not super lengthy, and straight to the points (easy to follow/added to the experience)
-
FINAL BOSS MECHANICS ARE AWESOME unique and entertaining, they add more to the game-play in a positive way.
Neutral Comments:
-
It would add a LOT to the game, if Minecraft Music was played upon entering areas or locations.
-
It would add a LOT if the weather changed.
-
It would add a LOT if the day/night cycle changed.
-
The portion located in the nether...could have been located in the over world using the /tp command. (unless you REALLY wanted the 'full specturm' of nether travel animations)
-
This world is large enough and picturesque enough to merit the addition of other quests and similar (future updates?)
u/AdamDJM thank you for this contribution to the community! I've enjoyed it greatly, and hope others do as well!
Wow! Excellent review! Glad to hear you loved the builds and gameplay. i agree with the vast majority of your points, especially your criticisms. Honestly, thank you so much for playing, it makes mapmaking so much more rewarding. I'll definitely take your points into account in my next map. Thank you sincerely for playing, and I can't wait for you to enjoy my next one. :)
From one creator to another, keep it up. I love building, and for sure the fuel that is most rewarding is the use of my efforts by others. Feel free to use anything I've created! (My latest is the RSV Goonter!
The farm area reminds me of The Rows on the Wandering Isle in World of Warcraft.
Been too long since I’ve played a CTM map! Definitely gonna try this one! Congratulations on finishing this! Good job sticking it out to the end!
Wish I had a pc so bad to play this looks awesome!
Nice, gettin those cape points ;)
SQUEEEEEEEEEE!
I'm gonna run this on a Rock64 server, see how it goes :)
This looks super awesome! I hope this is the precursor to a new wave of adventure maps like this, I find that they're lacking these days.
Interesting
Thanks man! I was looking for a big adventure map to play with my friends.
I can hardly even imagine the effort that goes into making these
What's this ? Is it just a map to play on and manage ressource or is there a story/quests ? Boss drops random or set loot ? Do they respawn or quest-only ?
-
There's a general story to follow, but no characters or anything in depth. Just a general narrative to follow and some background lore to find.
-
Essentially it's a quest to find 4 crystal shards scattered across the island, which you must complete various dungeons/challenges to obtain them. Once all 4 are collected, you must face the final boss.
-
The boss is the final enemy in the map, so once defeated you're sent back to the main world to explore the island as you please. Basically, the boss doesn't drop anything. The reward for defeating the boss is you the fact that you complete the map.
-
Mobs respawn in every dungeon but one, the purple dungeon. Obviously the boss doesn't respawn either.
Hope that answered your questions!
This is beautifull!!!
It looks great! Cant wait to get home and play!
Looks hella cool
Is there any place I should go first after the village? I see a hellscape with a red beacon nearby, but that can't be early game content :/. Not sure where I should go
Edit: Is there a map anywhere? Do I take the crystals back to spawn?
-
There are 4 dungeons to explore once you get geared up from the village and its surroundings. They're all relatively balanced, so it doesn't matter too much which one you do first.
-
There's a floor map in the underground section of the village, just beyond the crystal room where you spawned.
-
You'll need to collect the 4 crystal shards from their associated dungeons, and return them to the spawn room where they can be placed in the hoppers.
Hope that helped!
Thanks!

Thanks for putting this together. Look forward to downloading and playing!
Do you ever get the ability to break/place blocks? I was hoping this would be more like a traditional CTM survival map but it's looks like it's not quite that...
It's not a traditional CTM map, but if you want to play it that way, then you can do so by setting this block to air: 1054 2 -157. The game isn't made for survival mode, but you're free to try it if you'd like.
Just tried it in VR with Vivecraft. Only did a little exploring so far, but really immersive, your map looks beautiful.
Wow, I'd love to see the map in VR, that would be really interesting. Thanks for the compliment by the way :)
It seems so cool. Never played adventure, any rules I need to know? Digging is forbidden I guess?
Yeah, there's no digging, but you'll get loot from chests. Most things will be explained within the map, but if you're confused here's a few pointers:
-
You'll need to gear up in the starting village and its surrounding area before tackling one of the dungeons. Gold nuggets are the currency for traders in the town, but you'll find them later on.

If you have any questions while playing, don't hesitate to ask!
Are you supposed to be able to craft potions? Because I've come across all sorts of water bottles and potion ingredients, but no blaze powder to make potions with.
I believe there is some blaze powder scattered around the place, but I can't remember where. Regardless, blaze powder is only used in strength potions anyway if I'm not mistaken. If you really want strength potions though, you can buy them in Starry Village.
I meant for the ability to brew potions at all. I found some though, so I'm all good.
Hey dude, I'm pretty bored today so I'm going to give it a try... will update.
Brilliantly beautiful map.
Overall: Pretty fun and great. Though I have a very minor gripe about the Blue Crystal section. That part in the Blue Crystal section with the extending bridges made me incredibly frustrated just due to how slow the bridges extended and thus how tedious it was to get back up to the top. Overall though, this was a blast to play and see. I loved doing the Crystal areas and I loved looking for the secret treasures. I thought they had very good hints that were informative but don't give anything away. I took some screenshots with Conquest of the Sun as my shader pack and Better Vanilla by Fisher/PixelNinja521 as my resource pack. C:
Wow, that's really beautiful with those shaders and resource pack, thanks so much for taking screenshots. Glad you enjoyed the map! And I agree with the blue crystal section. It was really difficult to balance. In hindsight I definitely would put another spawn point half ways up to make it less frustrating. Thanks for playing!
This looks so amazing for a long map (and in general)!
REVIEW Cons:
-
First area is probably the most difficult mob wise.
-
Profound sense of loneliness
-
Spent way too long looking around in all the little houses to only ever find nuggets and food
-
Variety of food is nice, but it caused major clogging
-
No personal storage, had to use a nearby house
-
Mobs don't give XP. I know it is probably intended for us to find the bottles of enchanting, but given the enchantment tables and books you give us, we need more XP available
-
Most of your "treasure" rewards are books that I do not have enough XP to use
-
Parkour where you have to jump a 4 block gap or a 3 block, 1 vertical gap is nigh impossible. Makes it very unenjoyable to play.
-
No spectator mode when map is complete
-
The blue shard was problematic. One of the targets stopped respawning the minecart, and I had to cheat to move on. Then, the bridges were very annoying, as the last block disappeared the moment it reached the destination. The parkour sections were difficult because there were a couple jumps that resulted in you having to do the bridge section over again, which takes forever
-
In the middle of the boss fight all of the husks despawned and I just went and killed the evoker, which I don't think was intended
-
No reward for finishing the map, no daylight cycle
-
Respawning mobs
-
The exit of the blue dungeon takes you right to the purple dungeon. I hit both up, but it was a little confusing to get back after.
Pros:
-
Visuals were stunning! Landscape and Builds were detailed, appropriate, and pleasing visually
-
Mechanics involving blocks physically being animated were fantastic and never failed to work (besides once). Really creative choice
-
There was enough food
-
Horses! Thank you!
-
Mobs were correctly balanced
-
Lore was good, there were enough secrets to keep me interested
-
Travel time was decent
-
Checkpoint system worked great
-
Most parkour was pretty cool
-
Villager trades were great, and correctly balanced
In general, I thought it was a very solid map. The visuals are the strongpoint, and the gameplay was creative and well thought out. While there are areas where it could be improved, they were mostly minor annoyances. I found myself wanting to keep playing it. One thing I will stress is that I want to be able to use spectator.
I love your review, thanks for taking the time to do it. It's one thing for someone to play my map, but to get constructive feedback on it is so helpful for the future.
Just thought I'd let you know that the husks dying in the boss fight is intentional, although perhaps I should have made it more obvious. You only need to kill 3 or 4 to remove the protection spell from the boss. If you don't kill the boss in time, another set of husks spawn to protect him.
Also, in hindsight maybe I should've given the option to change gamemodes after completing the map. Nevertheless, if you still want to do it, just set this block to air: 1054 2 -157.
Thanks for playing! :)
AH man I just deleted it! No worries
Given how nobody else seems to have mentioned it, I'm assuming what happened to me was some sort of bug. I'm in what can best be described as a hot/cold floor parkour room, one of the first challenges I've come across. I hit both switches, and found the book that SAYS "hit both switches," but the gate isn't opening as I believed it would.
Am I doing something wrong? Or has something gone awry? If so, how do I fix it?
Hmm, that's really weird. It's definitely a bug that you encountered, which is unfortunate. In hindsight I would've coded the map differently, but as of now there are one or two rare bugs that happen as a result of chunk loading.
There are two things I suggest you do. Firstly, type in this command: /setblock 1054 2 -157 air. This will allow you to enter creative mode and you can bypass the puzzle. Secondly, if your render distance is really low, try to bump it up a little so nothing like this occurs again. It's super unlikely that you'll encounter two bugs, but it might be good just to be on the safe side. If your computer can't handle a higher render distance then don't even worry about it.
Sorry you had to deal with this issue, and I hope you can still enjoy my map! :)
Thank you! ...and yes, I definitely have been! Used a little logic to locate the captain's treasure in the first fifteen minutes of play, which made me super happy. I'm sure I'm gonna have a good time.
Thanks again for helping with my problem!
My pleasure, and congrats on getting that treasure so quickly. Have fun!
So after playing the map and taking notes as I played I have decided to post said notes here. slight spoiler warning I suppose
-
no clear set of rules
-
love the scenery
-
not a ton of parkour but plenty to be fun
-
loved the riddles
-
great how it tells you when you solve a riddle
-
loved the sawmill
-
small puzzle elements included
-
in green area I believe it is the bridge should go down once shard is collected
-
in the area where you shoot the mine carts some of the bridges vanish too fast
-
plenty of loot
-
red area could have a easier way back
-
loved the campfire that is hidden away
-
final boss was great especially because I haven't fought that enemy very much
-
design there was also good
-
when you return to the island it should put you in survival or creative so you can explore the island little restrictions
-
loved the ship
Thanks for playing, and thanks for your great feedback. All points I agree with, and I'm glad you enjoyed the map!
This map looks absolutely beautiful and well done on all the time and effort put it.
Some really great builds.
Love the mechanics of pushing buttons and things actually happening.
However, oh my god the parkour challenges are the worst. I’ve only seen one or two other complaints so maybe my friend and I are just terrible at jumping but we have burned through 2 entire infinity bows trying to get the blue shard. I am ready to smash my entire laptop.
Again, incredible map, you are an amazing builder and I think the story itself is nice and straight forward and that mini map!! Loved it!
But screw the parkour. So infuriating.
Edit: also, found loot to be a little sparse, fine with 2 people, but I think playing with more would be rough.
Yeah that parkour can definitely be annoying, sorry about that. If/when I do another similar map, it'll be one of the many changes I make. Glad you enjoyed the map though, that's really encouraging to hear!
All good man. It’s a genuinely fantastic piece of work. I will probably bash my head against the wall a few more times yet before giving up for good. But you should definitely be proud.
Looking forward to see what else you come up with in the future.
Well, if you get too frustrated you can always type in this command to unlock creative mode: /setblock 1054 2 -157 air. Enjoy ;)
Thanks! Lol
"where we dropping boys?!"
Tilted!
Heya, I can't seem to open any chests or get items from item frames in the starting area. Am I supposed to be getting gear some other way?
You should be able to? If you're playing on a server, do you have op permissions enabled for yourself?
Looks like it was a problem with my mods, nevermind! Playing on vanilla works fine.
Are you supposed to get the red crystal from that red fiery castle? Because I can't find it.
It's right by the skeleton of the dragon. You've gotta deactivate the two electricity towers inside the fortress, and then go down inside to get there. Let me know if you're still stuck and I'll send you a walkthrough video from when I was Beta testing :)
Okay so I just disabled the towers but I still can't find any way to the skeleton.
Here's some of an early walkthrough. The video contains a bug or two since it was a developmental version of the map, but it should answer your question regarding the red dungeon. Any other questions, feel free to ask!
kthanks I just didn't see that button.

wow. you are really good at building, but it does get a bet confusing. maybe i accidentally went the wrong way or something, but i ended up randomly wandering.
Someone needs to make The Witness in Minecraft
You should make it clear that the spawn pot takes away shards. I retrieved the red shard, gave myself the potion to skip parkour, and found that I lost the shard and my wife and my sense of meaning.
It took away your shard? That's really weird, might be a glitch. Was the shard in the last slot of your hotbar and the potion replaced it? Because the potion always replaces the last item in the hotbar like the tooltip says. However, I'm definitely interested in reproducing this problem if that isn't the case.
It could well have been. Maybe I imagined the whole thing, lemme know what you find out
Will do! I'll try reproducing it tomorrow. Thanks for bringing this to my attention :)
It had to have been in the ninth slot. I was unable to reproduce it. Thanks for your help, I'm sorry!
No worries, sorry you had to endure that. I'll definitely take that point in mind for my next map. Really though, I appreciate responses like yours, they help me improve my future maps. Thanks! :)
So are there not rules anywhere or am I just blind?
You'll get a couple tips once you start, but other than that you're all on your own. If you get stuck at any point just PM me though and I'll try my best to help.

Controversial opinion, but any adventure map is automatically 100% if it doesn't have parkour.
How do u waste two years making a subgame
