World Book Day was brought to life for two schools earlier this month, when North Kent College students from its Tonbridge campus adapted popular children’s books into performance pieces.
The Applied Theatre Level 2 and Level 3 students visited Bishops Down Primary School in Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall St Paul’s CE Primary School to put on their own productions of Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam, written by Tracey Corderoy and Steven Lenton, and The Pirates on Holiday, written by Adam and Charlotte Cuillain.
The groups were comprised of both technical and acting students, and they had to manage the entire creation of the pieces, including costumes and backdrops, as well as the logistics of organising and touring the shows.
Faye Fairy, Director of Acting on UAL Applied Theatre, was delighted with how the shows went, saying:
“We were met with fabulous responses from both children and staff. Both schools are really keen to have us back again, and it was just a fantastic experience for both the children and our students!”

This course gives students the opportunity to experience a range of theatre related specialisms including acting, writing, devising, lighting, sound, scenography and design. Students work in a collaborative manner on projects that explore a range of performing contexts within the industry.
