There are few films that are done about Lebanon, and those that exist are usually biased or stereotypical accounts produced by people unfamiliar with the country or its rich and complex background. However, West Beirut sets itself apart from the pact, creating an incredibly poignant, humorous, witty, and insightful film about life for three teenagers during the Lebanese civil war.

It presents the conflict in a straight-forward and honest manner. The dialogue and acting (most of the actors are non-professionals) were wonderful, evoking much emotion, both happy and sad. Being Lebanese myself, I highly enjoyed the film and am very proud of it. A definite "must-see" for all, especially those of Lebanese heritage!

Intriguing coming-of-age tale set against the back-drop of war-torn Lebanon in 1975. Deliberately photographed to make the images look faded as if the film-stock has been badly stored since the mid 1970's , the narrative turns on the inability of the young heroes to have their Super-8 film footage processed due to war shortages. (they could have tried sending it to Hemel Hempstead.) Plays well until a freeze-frame finale that might be trying to evoke "The 400 Blows".

This is a truly remarkable film, with a real affection for it's characters. Excellent performances from the two main characters. Richly comic, poignant and tragic - this film reduced me to tears (both of joy and of laughter). There are some classic lines, particularly the one about Nescafe when Tarek was describing his inadvertent visit to a brothel in Beirut. Highly recommended!
