A heat wave that was supposed to end Thursday will last through Sunday, forecasters said. And instead of heat breaking, hail fell.

NEW YORK CITY — The heat wave isn't ending soon, but before it does, the city was hit by one-inch chunks of ice, according to forecasts and reports.

A heat advisory originally slated to end Thursday has been extended until Sunday at 8 p.m. and the city faced a 50 percent chance of potentially severe storms with damaging winds and hail, according to the National Weather Service.

The entire city was also under a severe thunderstorm watch until Thursday at 8 p.m. A previous thunderstorm warning for Manhattan and The Bronx listed a "possible" tornado, 60-mph wind gusts and 1-inch hail as hazards, according to the National Weather Service.

But all the rain likely won't cool things down.

"Heat indices could be in the lower 100s today and then again on Sunday," the advisory stated Thursday.

The heat wave has already prompted Gov. Kathy Hochul to warn of "dangerous" temperatures, the city to open cooling centers and Mayor Eric Adams and Consolidated Edison to take steps to conserve power in hopes of avoiding blackouts.

Thursday's heat index is expected to hit as high as 104 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Very warm and humid air is expected to linger ahead of a storm front bearing down on New York City and much of the East Coast, a National Weather Service short range forecast states.

"From eastern New York into New England and from the lower Mississippi Valley to the Carolinas, conditions are expected to become favorable for storms producing damaging winds across those areas today," the forecast states.

The thunderstorms most likely will be isolated and scattered, according to the forecast, although it notes a few could be strong to severe.

Numerous videos show hail falling in The Bronx during a Thursday afternoon thunderstorm.
