Crowds flocked to downtown D.C. Sunday to celebrate DC's Emancipation Day.

As the sun shined down on Freedom Plaza, freedom showed itself in so many ways.

"I’m outdoors, and I can get some fresh air and all that. Feels good," said one young Washingtonian.

From hands waving high in the sky, to kids turning their faces into canvases, and four-legged friends joining all the fun, it was one big party.

"I come here every year. I love it," said Bernard Thomas.

"The vibe of emancipation, the folks, the culture, it’s all really good," said Shaundel Knights.

As thousands celebrated the 3,100 people freed by President Abraham Lincoln's signature 162 years ago, many D.C. taxpayers said there is still more work to be done as they argue for statehood, representation and making their vote count.

"Still thinking about we’re not represented in statehood. We still got a way to go," said Knights.

The fight for statehood continues and will join full voting rights on Monday's agenda during the "Defending Our Vote" conversation hosted by Mayor Muriel Bowser at noon.

It serves as a reminder for some to voice their votes during the upcoming elections.

"You have to turn out and show that you’re a part of the process so that the people, or the powers that be, know 'hey, they’re important,'" said Arth Kparr.

Silence, one voter said, is not an option with the backdrop of Sunday's crowds a clear sign of that.

"We’re at Freedom Plaza. It’s a beautiful day. We’re not running from craziness. There’s so much of the world that’s in chaos. When people are silent, that’s what happens," said Knights.

Some services across D.C. will be closed Tuesday on emancipation day itself.
