Geopolitics is focused on the relationship between politics and territory. Through geopolitics we attempt to analyze and predict the actions and decisions of nations, or other forms of political power, by means of their geographical characteristics and location in the world. In a broader sense, geopolitics studies the general relations between countries on a global scale. Here we analyze local events in terms of the bigger, global picture.

How reliable/correct is the YouTube channel VisualPolitik EN?

Question

They make interesting videos regularly but I am not sure if they are entirely factually correct. Do you have any recommendations for other YouTube channels concerned with geopolitical issues?

Honestly, It's a pretty good channel, but don't expect it to be unbiased. It's pretty much the world from a western perspective, and it's pretty apparent when he talks about foreign relations and countries like China, Russia, Iran etc. etc.

Personally i prefer Caspian Report, i think it's less biased towards the west.

It's not factually incorrect as such. But it's little else to say other than the usual Western propaganda you get from MSM. You aren't actually gonna learn much.

I agree that the videos are 'interesting' that is well made, engrossing, something that will keep the average user interested in a dry subject like this (and give them an entirely distorted picture in the process). But if you actually want to learn something I will suggest not to take this channel too seriously.

To give you an example take this video about China. The headline is taken from a recently published schizophrenic article in The Economist (it was covered here). It's about as shallow as it gets although granted, you can't cover much in a 13 min clip. But when talking about the recently held CPC congress this October, the host decided it was necessary to tell the viewers that this time China spent less on the Congress. Like there was no grand buffet and such. Yes, because when covering this immense event, where the Chinese government's policies for next two decades were outlined, the thing that the viewers needed to know the most, is whether the Congress had hairdressers or not. See the problem?

Then the entire Congress was summarized in three bullet points - Chinese government will focus on Economy and poverty reduction, Foreign policy and the environment. I guess you could do better?

a recently published schizophrenic article

I love you.

Also, they're using degenerate rock music as a background when talking, so I could never watch their videos.

Contrary to some advice, do not look for unbiased material so much as try to find multiple biases on any given topic. And try researching stuff in detail using channels and subs like this as a news ticker.

This is actually a sound advice. Everyone searches and thinks has found the unbiased source. Don't trust yourself when you'll think that.

Yeah, just call each side by every glorious and disparaging moniker they've ever got, i.e., "in 1940, the degenerate Judaized capitalist France was liberated by the enemies of mankind and Holocaust deniers."

I honestly can't stand the shitty music he forces into his videos.

thank god I'm not the only one. Good channel otherwise.

Caspian Report is much better, and if you willing to watch long panels or talks many think tanks (like the Carnegie Endowment) put out videos.

I'm pretty sure that VisualPolitik EN is the English-language edition of what is essentially a Spanish-language Vox clone.

Their website

I like CaspianReport more, it has a lot less content but much higher quantity. Some of the videos are alright but the music and format are very annoying and the analysis is shallow. It's alright if you want to learn something quickly about a topic but beware of the bias as others have pointed out.

VisualPolitik EN is a great starter channel for anyone interested in foriegn policy and geopolitics.

Caspian Report is good too. I'm not as big of a fan as others in this sub, but it's still in my sub box.

maybe it's factual but it's biased to american libertrianism, the solution they push are always deregulation and taking away political control from currency. They tend to show just datas that support that point of view and ignore others.

I'm very late but I'd like to add something: although as far as I know the main points he makes are true, sometimes he gets small details wrong like mixing up the Pakistani Prime Minister and President.

Edited

They bring up some good points, but through time I have noticed that they are leaning to the left of political spectrum quite a bit, have pro EU and pro Globalistic views, often omit inconvenient statistics that go against their analysis. Also, they often mock conservative policies without reason and out of context, add points that have no connections to the topics, just to point out something they think is "bad"

u/Adunaiii avatar

Sometimes, they find things too low to mock, they think it goes without saying some things are terrible, so the video then goes accordingly.

I guess you are from the US? Because from my european point of view they are centric-right. Then again, your comment is 4yr. old so it might have changed since then.

where are they left? they have strong neoliberal views that don't mix well with left politics

Just flat out propaganda. Among their sources they cite is the Heritage Foundation, that should tell you all.

That isn't a good look. I stumbled on this thread after looking for their take on the tensions between Nato and Russia in Ukraine. I was suprised that they hadn't released anything lately. An older clip on the baltic states talked about "the success of the russian intervention in Ukraine" (@ ~2:30)

It seems like an odd way to describe the Annexation of Crimea. But neither does it seem like the way the heritage foundations wording.

I wonder if there are any other tendencies visual politik would have of learning pro-russia?

The first video I watched was about Afghanistan & Trump's new policy. Visual Politik discussed some real life issues and Trump's motives. I loved it.

ever since that, I love Visual Politiks, and also find it reliable.

The two other sources I recommend are

*Vox *Vice

Vox's political videos (US and international) are incredibly biased. Other than something like huffington post there's no worse offender on the left. Even their very neoliberal viewership are sometimes disgusted by just how blatant it is.

The intro of each video tells it all.
