Editorial Reviews
Together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, Deep Purple have been referred to as the unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-Seventies. One of the most influential and important guitar bands in history, they have sold over 100 million albums worldwide.
Made In Japan was recorded live over three nights during August 15 17, 1972 at Festival Hall, Osaka and Budokan, Tokyo. Four of the tracks come from the band s 1972 Machine Head album. It featured what many consider the classic Deep Purple lineup Ian Gillan (Vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (Guitars), Roger Glover (Bass), Jon Lord (Organ) and Ian Paice (Drums). Originally recorded only for the Japanese market, the album has since become seen as one of Deep Purple s seminal albums, and one of the greatest live albums of all time (A Rolling Stone reader s poll in 2012 voted Made In Japan as the sixth greatest live album of all time).
For 2014, the album has been newly remastered and presented in a number of special formats. The format options include previously unseen footage on DVD, bonus material and mixes, memorabilia and a hardback book.
This Limited Edition Deluxe Boxed Set includes remastered audio of all three complete shows across 4CDs, a DVD featuring rare documentary and live footage, a 7" promo single, and a 60+ Page hard bound book filled with rare and previously unseen photos and memorabilia.

After years of anticipation I finally received the LE Deluxe CD Box set of Made in Japan yesterday and having listened to the first two discs for the concerts from the 15th and 16th can only say the new Martin Pullan remix is excellent!
I have read some reviews online complaining that the mix is overly compressed and while it is more in your face, and maybe lacks a little of the warmth of the original Martin Birch mix 1972 release, it is crystal clear with excellent balance and a nice wide soundstage. The instrument imbalance of the 3 disc version has been corrected as now we can hear Roger Glover's bass again and Ritchie's guitar is prominent, in all its glory, in the right channel and Ian Paice's drums are tight and add some real power to the mix. Blackmore lovers are really going to enjoy this mix!
It is finally nice to have all the shows complete and I like having all the encores on a single CD and I did not find this a big deal when navigating to the appropriate concerts songs.
The DVD documentary was interesting but I do wish they offered the option of watching the recently found 8mm footage from the 72 Japan concert as a continuous show instead of breaking this up with side interviews but it was a joy to finally see this none the less and it is an excellent bonus.
The packaging is nice and the CD's/DVD are held in slots in the included book cover which while not ideal did not present any issue when removing them to play. I ended up burning copies for daily play so as not have to keep opening the box and removing the CD's risking scratching them. The book is not essential but did have some interesting commentary on the remix effort by Mr. Pullan but I was left feeling there was an opportunity lost as they could have included more photos from the tour and information on the original tapes and the efforts that went into the remix process. Also would have loved some more in depth interviews with the band and crew about the trip to Japan and the concerts.
The included reproduction of the tour program is a nice touch as an original today commands big money when you can find one and is somewhat rare. The family tree is interesting but not essential.
IMHO this was a no win situation for Mr. Pullan as the no matter how he mixed this effort it would always compared to Martin Birch's brilliant original mix but I can honestly say he did a magnificent job with the remix of the old tapes and this box set is highly recommended to anyone who loved the original Made in Japan release.
1. Highway Star : Superb Version , a great start to the CDs).
2.Child in Time : Great variations; Superb sounds ( crowd reaction, Brill !!)
[Can even hear a mike stand fall what sounds like the reverb on a live mic.]
A bizarre quote that i hope I have right is:
"There is always someone smaller than you...
There is always Somebody Taller than you..." [?]
3.Smoke on the Water;
Gillan gives the intro. The Bass sounds fuller and distorted or at least like it has been boosted by an octaver ( or is the Bass guitar given a D.I treatment or possibly a pedal ? ).
The Keyboard and guitar exchange is great, very superb live treatment.
As an inbetween comment after Gillan asks for more Monitor, someone in the background says something, and
Gillan seems to repeat it : " Everything Louder than Everything else", which is a conundrum like comment typical of Gillan.
4. The Mule. Excellent vehicle for Paice's drum solo. Works very well. Excellent end.
5. Strange Kind of Woman ; Superb Guitar Solo. and Great Vocal Sparring with Keyboard, Guitar et al.
6.Lazy: Amazing Keyboard intro, and the guitars work extra-ordinarily well as well ( Semi-Classical feel for the guitar, and a kind of Jazz-fusion for Jon Lord's Keyboards.)
7.Space Trucking: After the main part of the song, the drums take it down, and Ritchie plays some Volume Control Guitar, which is more likely done with volume knob touch rather than a pedal, and the Keyboard emphasizes the touch behind the tone.
Disc 2.
8. Black Night: Awesome version.
9. Speed King; Keeps the Feeling going, an excellent Thumper.
10. Lucille: What a power song in the hands of expert players !! A brilliant end to the set.
[ I just started listening to DEEP PURPLE live at the BEEB, 1970, and though just in, its great, especially for mono processed to stereo.AUGUST 27 Note: I Listened to DEEP PURPLE IN CONCERT 1970 and 1972( many times), what I call live at the BEEB, and the Double disc set is a perfect match for LIVE IN JAPAN.Fans will enjoy both of these sets.]
P.S. I am somewhat disappointed that the HD downloads were not included as stated on the boxed set cover but such is life. Karma works things out. Hopefully Amazon will contact those of us who did not receive the download codes and set things right. After all, we paid for it so it's a reasonable request to expect them to step up and set things right. Rock on Deep Purple fans.
