In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

    Fascinating tour
When visiting Vienna with a young baby, the only thing that we were sad we couldn’t do was visit at show at the State Opera. This tour was the next best thing and was a fascinating look round the amazing venue. The tour lasted 40 minutes with our guide Mary who was very good. The operation is an absolute machine though, with tours of multiple languages walking round all over the place - it was rammed. Absolutely essential to book online in advance, which was easy to do, otherwise you risk a long wait and being disappointed, and it’s definitely worth doing.

Book a tour - it's well worth it
A must do in Vienna, sadly we were unable to see a performance but we did the next best thing & did a guided tour (definitely advisable to prebook) which was great. Our guide was knowledgeable & passionate & gave us a real insight into the history of the place. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip

    Wonderful Tosca!
What a stunning building - definitely worth a visit, especially if you are able to get tickets to a performance. We were lucky to get excellent seats to a performance of Tosca, and it was the highlight of the holiday. Get there early to have a drink, enjoy the exquisite decor and take some photos. Nearly on par with the Garnier... and a word of advice: make an effort to dress up and enjoy it. The clothes being worn by patrons were as wonderful as the costumes on stage.

    Classic and modern mix
Amazing interior! On our visit we went for a tour guide and also for a ballet performance Goldberg variation! My boyfriend loves the ballett a lot, I am more of an opera person, but still liked the performance. Modern and entertaining! It's great to seat in the lodge, you have then more intimate experience and don't have to cue at the garderobe)

    Great performances and venue
I visited the Opera House twice during my trip to Vienna, once to see a ballet and the second time to see an opera. Both performances were excellent. The building itself was rebuilt during the last century following a fire but, although some of the facilities were obviously modernised, the original layout and atmosphere were retained. It is an impressive auditorium with great acoustics. Visit if you have the opportunity.

    Opera
The opera is the largest opera house in Austria. The theater was built in 1869 by architect August Sikkard von Sikkardsburg. The interior decoration and interiors were designed by Eduard van der Nüll.

    Tour of the Opera House
This is the closed period for opera but they give tours in many languages. The wise person books on line in good time. If you get there earlier than the 15 minutes suggested, you my be lucky to sit on the steps at the start of the tour. Any later you will be green with envy as you see those sitting while you wait in what was for us just over 30C! The tour in English was very well and comprehensively presented. The young male tour guide was informative and handled questions well and gave a very good understanding of the operational side of the Opera House as well as showing off its regal assets. The blend of contemporary technology with the classical ambience came over in spades. That the public purse keeps 50% of this renowned centre of music going is a great accolade the nation's support for music. If only for the tour, it is worth getting in the building and seeing and feeling it.

    Wow! What an experience!
The Wienerstaatsoper is beautiful and well-appointed. The music, singing and orchester themselves were world-class magnificent. The set was minimalistic and really detracted from the overall experience. The house was very hot, stifling. We loved the monitors at each seat which provided the text of the opera in your choice of languages!

    The Total Viennese Opera Experience
We attended a performance of Die Frau ohne Schatten, which had its premiere a hundred years ago or so in this opera house. My bucket list includes the whim of seeing operas in every major opera house in Europe. The Wiener Staatsoper did not disappoint. Beautiful opera house. Wonderful musical performance. Major Gripe: It was very, very difficult to obtain tickets. This was not my first choice. But the operas for an entire week were sold out. I can't blame this on the Wiener Staatsoper, but if you are traveling to Vienna, plan way, way ahead of your trip.

    A glamorous experience
We go to a lot of plays, musicals and other performances but had never been to the opera. Was never high on the list of things to do but figured Vienna would be a good place to change that. Loved the entire experience. The opera house is beautiful, there are tablets with translation and at intermission you could have a reserved table with your drink & canapés or whatever you ordered ready to save time. We had the loge seats (the boxes) and that was quite special. Personally loved seeing the orchestra in action. I can’t judge the opera itself nor the stage production but even if you’re not an opera buff, it’s an experience if you’re into the arts.

A wonderful evening is to be had at the state opera. The decor and splendour of the building make the whole occasion very special.

Subtitles are available on little tablets in front of seats. Interval drinks and food can also be ordered on the tablet.

The staff were very courteous but very strict about the timings. No one was allowed on to the central staircase to get to their seat until all staff were in place to assist theatre goers.

The dress code varied from black tie in the boxes and stalls to jeans and t-shirts in the standing areas where tickets cost a few euros.

There are plenty of touts so beware! Book your tickets online and pick them up at the opera house for a wonderful musical experience and delightfully glamorous occasion. Fabulous!

Our trip to Vienna was fairly last minute so no time to pre-book opera tickets before arrival. We're certainly not opera buffs anyway but love the cultural experience of visiting iconic places such as the Mariinsky & Verona Arena & of course the Vienna State Opera.

So the only way to get tickets was to queue for standing ones. We popped into the box office in the morning to get the low down of what to do. A very helpful girl told us where we would need to queue & that the doors opened to purchase at 5,30pm but it was advisable to get there at least an hour before, preferably an hour & a half & to bring something like a scarf to mark place,

Armed with a cloth bag, a tea towel, water & a "traveller" (rum & cokes in cooler cups) we arrived at 4.30pm to find we were 3rd in the queue. In fact the queue didn't grow massively whether that was due to the really hot weather or the opera, Capriccio, I don't know. Anyway the time went quickly & it was a very convivial atmosphere chatting with the other people in the queue who were mostly real opera buffs & told us a bit about the performance we would be seeing & the best options for standing (apparently upstairs for better acoustics or downstairs for better views).

At 5,30 pm doors opened & we were able to buy our tickets. 10 euros each cash only. We were then taken around to some stairs were we had to queue again in pairs, all quite regimented before eventually being allowed into the standing area. We found ourselves right at the front with fabulous views. We tied our teatowel & cloth bag to mark our place & were then free to explore the Opera House, even being allowed to try out the proper seats. The bars were reasonably priced too.

The performance started at 7pm & each seat & standing area has a small screen for subtitles. Any idea of leaving at the interval if we were tired/bored was scuppered as there is no interval in Capriccio. That said we really enjoyed it. The sets & costumes are wonderful the opera itself is actually very funny in places & the final aria very moving. You don't need to look at the subtitles the whole time as it is easy to get the gist of what is going on. We had a fabulous evening & so glad that we"d gone.

Fnal couple of points, there is no strict dress code but they don't allow men in shorts, it is a very long time to stand but we managed it at 65 & 68 & there will be ticket touts while you're queuing who'll try & sell you 14 euro tickets for 30 euros, please don't encourage them.

Even though I knew this was popular, I was amazed at how many people, of all nations, queued up for the guided tour. There were SO Many groups, and it was so crowded and confusing. The guide did have plenty of information, but it was distracting when other groups entered while he was talking. If you enjoy overwrought baroque architecture, this tour is for you. The highlight for me, was seeing the backstage area...but again, it was crowded and hard to hear the guide explain what we were seeing.

We were in Vienna for several days and wanted to take in an opera performance at the Vienna State Opera. Fortunately, there were several options to chose from. I picked Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold. The performance was excellent. The opera house is impressive and beautiful. The music and singing was expert. There were screens behind each chair to translate the opera into your preferred language. I bought my tickets on the Vienna State Opera’s own website several months in advance and we ended up in the seventh row of the orchestra. Great seats. Highly recommended!

We were lucky to get tickets to a premiere during our visit and really enjoyed the drama of the event. The translation screens were a great addition to the experience. As it was our first opera we can’t comment on the opera itself but really enjoyed the whole experience

We bought cheap tickets (10 euros each) but we couldnt see the show from our place which is not reasonable at all. Also, during the 3 hours that we spent there, for 4 times the staff members talked with us in a rude/agressive way, giving orders, point them fingers to us and speaking too loud to us (they yelled at my mother who has 60 years old for more than once.. it was really a very bad experience). If you are not a sadomasochist, I really recommend you to avoid this terrible place.

This is a must in Vienna. We bought two tickets on line before we visited Vienna for the ballet Onegin. We booked a box on the second level seats 2 and 3. The box was amazing. Although there is other people seated behind you you actually do not notice them. There was a great view from our seats and a private cloakroom within the box. We booked drinks and cakes for the intermission and we found this saved any queues during the break. The drinks and cakes were laid out on a reserved table so you could stand a chat before heading back in to your box.
The ballet was stunning, a truly cultured evening.

Fantastic building and worth to book the tour to see inside the Opera.
Our first plan was to book a concert but they inform us that during July and August there are not any performances.
Having no other option we booked the tour that we recommend as we learned about the history of the opera and same time visited all stages.

The building is beautiful but beware of the “partial view” tickets being sold. I bought a partial view ticket for the ballet and completely understand those are not great seats- but you could not see an inch of the stage from my seat. I was on the third floor side box and all I could see was the top of the curtain and the boxes across from us. See photo attached- I am behind 2 rows of people and this was the view from my actual seat: the top of the curtain and the stage was down below (out of sight). Zero sight of dancers or the orchestra.

I am disappointed they even sell tickets for seats like this, there is no partial view- as there is no view at all. Please beware when purchasing as you will not see a thing.
