Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly to be the first duo to appear on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs in over 25 years

In the world of light entertainment there's no Ant McPartlin without Dec Donnelly, and the two aren't changing that when it comes to Desert Island Discs.

The Geordie duo will appear on the BBC Radio 4 show's final episode of 2013, making them the first pair to do so in over 25 years.

The last double act to share their castaway records were Peter Fluck and Robert Law, the creators of Spitting Image, who appeared on the show in February 1987.

Viennese comedian, actor and musician, Vic Oliver was the first guest to appear on Desert Island Discs, which was recorded in the BBC’s Maida Vale studio on 27th January 1942.

The premise of the show hasn't changed since, as the well-known person is asked which eight records would they choose to take to a desert island, assuming there is a way to play the music indefinitely.

Ant and Dec will choose two songs individually and four together; but will also get to select a luxury item and a book each for their turn on the show hosted by Kirsty Young.

Kirsty took over the Sunday radio show from Sue Lawley in October 2006, who had been hosting since May 1988 when she replaced Michael Parkinson.

Michael had actually interviewed Sue - a TV reporter and presenter at the time - on the show in 1987, but was only the host for two years, having been brought in after the death of Desert Island Disc creator and first presenter, Roy Plomley, in 1985.

Roy interviewed another famous comedy duo when he invited Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise on the show in August 1966.

Just like Eric and Ernie, Ant and Dec met each other in their teens - while starring in CBBC show Byker Grove - and have been friends and work colleagues ever since.

The duo won the National Television Award for Best Entertainment Presenter(s) for 12 straight years from 2001 to 2013, thanks to their work on SMTV: Live, Pop Idol, Britain's Got Talent, Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

Ant and Dec on Desert Island Discs with Kirsty Young will be broadcast on Sunday 29th December, 11.15am, on BBC Radio 4
