1913- death of George I of Greece. I know Greek royal, but he was born Prince William of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glcksburg. His first name was Christian but he went by William, which was in honor of both of his grandfathers. He was the second son of Christian IX and Louise of Hesse-Kassel. They were a relatively obscure branch of the royal family when he was born. His father was made the heir of Frederick VII in 1852. One of the main reasons seemed to be Louise. Louise's mother was Princess Charlotte of Denmark, a niece of Christian VII (Charlotte's father was Frederick, hereditary prince of Denmark was Christian's half brother and served as his regent until a coup put Frederick V as regent). Christian's own claim was weaker then his wife. The closest claim was his maternal grandmother was Louise of Denmark, a daughter of Frederick V.

William/George was the 3 of 6 children of his parents. His father becoming known as the father in law of Europe.

His siblings included:
-Christian: who became Frederick VIII and married Louise of Sweden. He was the great-grandfather of Queen Margrethe, King Harald and King Albert of Belgium, and great great grandfather of GD Henri of Luxembourg.
-Alexandra: married future Edward VII of UK. Great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II and King Harald of Norway.
-Dagmar: she married Alexander III of Russia and was mother of Nicholas II. She had living descendants from her younger children.
-Thyra-married prince Ernst August of Hannover. Great grandmother of the current Prince Ernst August of Hannover.
-Valdemar- married Marie D'Orleans, a niece of the Count of Paris. Their sons were raised in his faith, and their one daughter a Catholic. Three of his sons renounced their titles and became Counts of Rosenberg. His only son who didn't was Prince Axel who married Princess Margarethe of Sweden (Margarethe's mother was Valdemar's niece). Their son George married a niece of the Queen Mum. The couple's only daughter Margaret married Prince Rene of Bourbon-Parma. She was the mother of Queen Anne of Romania.

Following the overthrow of Otto of Greece, and refusal to allow his brother Lutipold to succeed, the Greeks were looking for a new monarch. Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh was their top choice and won the election. Victoria though was opposed to her son taking the throne. The queen's brother in law and nephew were both considered. William received 6 votes and at the age of 17 he was elected as the new king of Greece. He took the throne before his father did.

He met Grand Duchess Olga at first when she was 12, and later when he was visiting his sister Dagmar. Olga was a cousin of Dagmar's husband Alexander. Olga's father was the younger brother of Tsar Alexander II. They married in 1867 in Russia when she was 16. Marriage to an Orthodox princess was meant to assure the people of Greece that the royal children would be raised Orthodox which was the main religion in Greece.

The couple had eight children:
-Constantine: Became Constantine I of Greece and married Sophie of Prussia. He was the grandfather of King Constantine II and Queen Sofia of Spain.
-George: who married Princess Marie Bonaparte. Marie's great-grandfather was Lucien Bonaparte, a younger brother of Napoleon.
-Alexandra: married Grand Duke Paul of Russia. Paul was a brother in law to George's sister Dagmar as he was younger brother of Alexander III.
-Nicholas: married Grand Duchess Elena. Her father was a younger brother of Alexander III. Their children included Princess Marina, the late Duchess of Kent, mother of the current Duke of Kent.
-Maria- married Grand Duke George, a grandson of Tsar Nicholas. Her first husband was killed by firing squad during the Russian revolution.
-Olga-died in infancy
-Andrew-married to Prince Alice of Battenberg. Father of Prince Philip.
-Christopher- his first marriage to Anastasia Worthington Leeds was childless. His stepson though William married one of his nieces, Princess Xenia (daughter of Marie). His second marriage was to Princess Francois of Orleans and they had one son Michael born shortly before his death. Michael had two daughters, one of whom is Princess Olga, Duchess of Apulia.

He was assassinated in 1913. He had planned to abdicate in favor of his son after his jubilee. His assassin was arrested and tortured before falling out a police window six weeks later to his death.

George I's coffin was draped in the flags of both Denmark and Greece. He was buried in a tomb at his palace Tatoi.

March 24, 1628 birth of Sophie Amalie of Brunswick-Luneburg. Sophie was the consort of Frederick III of Denmark.

She was the daughter of George, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg. Her paternal grandmother was Dorothea of Denmark. Sophie and her husband's fathers were first cousins, her husband's paternal grandfather being Frederick II. Frederick and Dorothea were the children of Christian III. Her mother was Anne Eleonore of Hesse-Darmstadt. She was the fifth of their 8 children.

Her siblings:
-Magdalene died the same year she was born
-Christian married Dorothea of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glcksburg but he died childless and was succeeded by a brother
-George William succeeded Christian. He married Eleonore d'Esmier d'Olbreuse. They only had a daughter Sophie Dorothea who married her first cousin George Louis who became George I of Great Britain. She was later divorced, and exiled to Celle, but her son was George II.
-John Frederick, Duke of Brunswick-Calenberg. He married Benedicta Henrietta of the Palatinate. They had 2 daughters reach adulthood. One married Rinaldo III, Duke of Modena. And the other married Joseph I, Holy Roman emperor.
-Dorothea Magdalene of Brunswick-Luneburg (her first younger sibling) died at the age of one
-Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hanover married of Sophia of the Palatinate, a maternal granddaughter of James VI through his daughter Elizabeth. Through Sophia, his eldest son would become George I.
-Anna Marie Eleonore of Brunswick-Luneburg lived to be 36 but doesn't seem to have been married.

She was born at Herzberg castle. She was married to Frederick in 1643. Frederick was the Prince-archbishop of Bremen and not expected to be king. He was the son of Christian IV and his first wife Anne Catherine of Brandenberg. He was the 5th of 6 children of his parents (not including the stillbirth). Elizabeth, Frederik and Sophie had all died young, but his older brother Christian was alive. His younger brother Ulrik died in 1633. He had a number of half-siblings as well. Christian married Magdalene Sibylle of Saxony but they were childless. Christian was a heavy drinker and gambler, heavily in debt when he died. He died in 1647, 4 years after his brother married Sophie. Their father Christian IV would die a year later.

Frederick's election was not a simple one. There were many opposed to him due to his numerous conflicts during his previous posts. He was only named king after he signed an agreement.

Sophie and her husband had lived humbly after he had been driven out of Bremen during the war with Sweden. When he was elected crown prince she moved with him to Denmark.Sophie was the life of the court and introduced balls and masquerades. The Danish opera and ballet were both introduced during her husband's reign because of her. She held great influence politically over her husband, serving as his advisor.

In 1670 she was widowed. She fought with her daughter in law for years, not wanting to give up her power. The new queen wasn't about to back down either from her. They fought over many things including the imprisonment of Leonora Christina Ulfeldt who was Frederick's half sister. She was imprisoned as her husband's power. She had been arrested when she went to England to reclaim money from Charles II (her cousin) her husband loaned him in exile. He repaid her by arresting her and sending her back to Frederick. She spent 22 years in prison, her husband never trying to free her. The new queen took pity, and made her husband swear that if she bore him a son, he would release her. When Frederick was born, Christian would have freed her, but his mother found out. She refused to attend her grandson's baptism if Leonora was freed, so she was not. Leonora was released from her prison cell after Sophie died.

She died in Copenhagen in 1685 and was buried at Roskilde cathedral

Her and her husband had eight children.
-Christian: became Christian V. He married Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel. They had six children.
-Anna Sophia: married John George III, elector of Saxony. 2 sons
-Frederika Amalia: married Christian Albert, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. Her grandson became Adolph Frederick, King of Sweden.
-Princess Wilhelmine Ernestine: married Charles II, Elector of the Palatinate. The marriage was unhappy and produced no children. She was slightly crippled and was too shy for his taste. After she was widowed, she went to live with her widowed sister Anna Sophia in Saxony where she died 21 years later. Her sister was raising her grandson Augustus III of Poland.
-Frederick- died in infancy
-George-husband of Queen Anne of Great Britain. Unlike Anne's brother in law William, George was never made King. He was Duke of Cumberland. Sadly he and Anne had 12 miscarriages/stillbirths. Two daughters died within days of each other at 1 and 2, and another 2 kids died the day they were born. Their son William died at the age of 11.
-Ulrika Eleonora: married Charles XI of Sweden. Her daughter was Ulrika Eleonora, Queen of Sweden. Her daughter gave up her throne in favor of her husband Frederik. Her daughter only suffered miscarriages. When her son in law died, he was succeeded by Ulrika's great-nephew (grandson of her sister Frederika)
-Dorothea died in infancy

May 24, 1935- wedding of Princess Ingrid of Sweden and Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Iceland.

Ingrid was the daughter of the future Gustaf VI of Sweden (he was Crown prince at the time) and Margaret of Connaught (daughter of Victoria's son Prince Arthur). Her father would become king in 1950. Her mother had died in 1923 (when she was 13) and her father had married Lady Louise Mountbatten three years later (Louise was Prince Philip's aunt). She had four brothers, Gustaf Adolph (father of King Carl Gustav), Bertil, Sigvard and Carl Johan.

Frederick was the son of Christian X of Denmark and Queen Alexandra. His father had come to the throne when he was 13. He had one younger brother Knud. His mother Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin was the daughter of Frederick Francis III, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and his wife Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna of Russia (a granddaughter of Nicholas I of Russia).

Before the execution of the Romanovs, one of the daughter of Nicholas II were considered for Frederick. And the future Edward VIII had been considered among others for Ingrid.

The couple were married at Stockholm cathedral.

There was an 11 year age difference between the couple, Ingrid was 25 and Frederick was 36 but they were said to have been a couple for some time.

Ingrid wore the famous daisy broach that her daughter is known for.

She wore the khedive of Egypt tiara which was worn by all her daughters on their wedding day and her granddaughters as well. It now belongs to Anne-Marie.

orderofsplendor.blogspot.com/2017/06/tiara-thursday-khedive-of-egypt-tiara.html

The couple were married for 37 years before Frederick died in 1972. Ingrid survived her husband by 28 years, dying in 2000.

The couple only had 3 daughters. The throne was expected to pass to his brother Knud, but the law was changed in 1953 to male-preference. Frederick was of course succeeded by Queen Margrethe.

Their daughters:
-Margrethe: married Henri Marie Jean Andr de Laborde de Monpezat (who died in 2018). They had two sons and have eight grandchildren.
-Benedikte: married Richard, 6th Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (who died in 2017). They had three children and four grandchildren. Her daughter Alexandra is married to the owner of Egeskov Castle (the best preserved European Renaissance water castle). Her daughter Nathalie is an Olympic dressage rider.
-Anne-Marie: married Constantine II of Greece. They were sent into exile in 1967 and spent decades in London. They have five children and 9 grandchildren.

May 29, 1259 the death of Christopher I of Denmark.

Christopher was the son of Valdemar II. Valdemar was married twice, and had seven children by his two wives. Christopher was his youngest surviving child. His first wife was Dagmar of Bohemia, the daughter of Ottokar I, Duke of Bohemia. His second wife and Christopher's mother was Berengaria of Portugal. His maternal grandparents were Sancho I of Portugal and Dulce of Aragon. He had one half brother (and a stillbirth), as well as three older full siblings. His mother had a stillbirth after him. His father also had natural kids.

His siblings:
-Valdemar the younger: only surviving child of Dagmar. He served as a junior king from 1218-1231 when he died (his father died in 1241). He was married to Eleanor of Portugal. Eleanor was a niece of Valdemar's stepmother Berengaria (her father Alfonso II of Portugal was Berengaria's older brother). Eleanor died giving birth to their short lived child. Valdemar died at 22 in a shooting accident.
-Eric- eldest son of Berengaria. He became Eric IV in 1241 until his death in 1250 (like his older half brother he served as junior king during his father's life time). Married to Jutta of Saxony, daughter of Albert I of Saxony. Besides two sons who died young, they only had 4 daughters. Sophia married Valdemar of Sweden (ancestress of Christian I of Denmark), Ingeborg married Magnus VI of Norway, Jutta and Agnes were abbesses. He was killed while a guest at his brother Abel's home. Was beheaded and dumped in a lake. Abel claimed to have no role in his death.
-Sophie: married John I, Margrave of Brandenburg. She was his first wife and bore six of his children. He would remarry after her death and have another four.
-Abel: became king after the murder of his brother Eric. Abel would serve for a year and a half before he was killed by a wheelright. His wife Matilda was a daughter of Adolf IV, Count of Holstein. After Abel's death Matilda went to a convent for a short time before leaving it to marry the Swedish regent Birger Jarl until this death. Matilda and Abel had four children.

In 1252 Christopher was 33 years old. When Abel was killed there came the question of who would succeed him. He had three sons. But his eldest son Valdemar was a prisoner of the Archbishop of Cologne at the time. Instead Christopher was elected king and was crowned Christmas day in 1252 at Lund castle. Valdemar would eventually be freed thanks to the aid of his maternal Holstein relatives, and he was granted his father's title of Duke of Schleswig which was later inherited by one of his younger brothers.

On becoming king Christopher worked to ensure his throne. He moved to have Eric canonized. And placed the blame for his murder at the feet of Abel. If he was guilty of regicide, his sons were not entitled to the throne. Christopher wanted to ensure the throne for his own heirs.

Christopher spent his short reign putting down rebelions, and problems with Norway and Sweden. His nephews and their claim to the throne was a thorn, and when Valdemar died, he tried to stop Valdemar's brother from inheriting. Matilda though roused some of the counts of Northern Germany to rebel and Christopher fled to Southern Jutland.

Christopher died taking communion. It was believed the communion wine he was handed at Ryd abbey had been poisoned. The king had been excommunicated for trying to tax the churches among other issues with the bishops. But despite that he was buried before the high altar at Ribe cathedral. He was succeeded by his eldest son.

Christopher had married Margaret Sambiria. Margaret was the daughter of Sambor II, Duke of Pomerania.

The couple had five children, three of whom reached adulthood:

-Eric: succeeded his father as Eric V at the age of 10. He was married to Agnes of Brandenberg (her father John had been married to Christopher's sister Sophie. Agnes though was the daughter of his second wife). They had seven children. Eric VI and Christopher II were his sons. His daughter Martha married King Birger of Sweden
-Niels: died young
-Valdemar: died young
-Matilda: married Albert III, Margrave of Brandenburg-Salzwedel. They had four children.
-Margaret: married John II, Count of Holstein-Kiel. Had two sons

Yes, as is evident from your post, Danish kings and pretenders killed each other all the time during the 1200's! Becoming king = a short life.
But the killings ended abruptly with the assassination of Erik Klipping in 1286.
There was simply so much chaos and bad PR following that murder that Erik Klipping ended up being the last Danish king murdered.

And not least because there was little need for killing the king afterwards. Because in 1282 Erik Klipping was forced to sign the Danish version of Magna Carta. Ensuring the rights of the nobility and ensuring that the law took precedence in disputes with (reasonably) fair trials. The power of the king was no longer absolute.

I have for years been thinking about writing about that assassination, because to this day the historians are still not sure who was really behind the murder and why.
One thing is certain though: It did not work out as planned afterwards!
