About the Author

Growing up, JOAN DiCICCO loved reading biographies and was inspired by other people's stories. She was drawn to Garrett Morgan's story after seeing him described in an anthology of African-American inventors as the only "hero-inventor" among them. This is her first picture book. Joan and her husband live in Portland, Oregon.

EBONY GLENN is a children's book illustrator who enjoys bringing stories to life with whimsical and expressive imagery. A passion for the arts, great storytelling, and advocating for more diverse narratives in children's books, she aims to create art that will foster a love of reading in young readers.

Joan D. uses descriptive, action-packed language detailing momentous events in Morgan’s life that shaped his character and inspired him to create innovative solutions to everyday problems in the poor, rural environment in which he was born. He could just as easily have fostered a resentful attitude towards life. Ebony Glenn’s illustrations bring the story to life.
Explaining topics such as sharecropping as well as details of mass production in the early years of clothing manufacturing, DiCicco reveals Morgan as resilient, persistent, curious, and determined, qualities that instill inspiration to follow dreams, no matter one’s background. Still a relevant topic for children in all communities.

DiCicco covers many of this great inventor’s accomplishments, such as becoming the first black machinist, opening his own business manufacturing affordable clothing for the local community, the gas mask (which won the Grand Prize Gold Medal at the 1914 International Exposition of Safety and Sanitation in NYC) and a much improved traffic light. He also started his own newspaper for the black community in order to overcome discrimination in advertising.
He risked his life out of concern for the safety of others, not as a promotional stunt and became a true hero in the most difficult circumstances, ignoring racist attitudes and proving his grit and integrity.

DiCicco graciously focuses on Morgan’s positive, generous, inventive spirit throughout, weaving the story around his inspiring quote: “If a man puts something to block your way, the first time you go around it, the second time you go over it, and the third time you go through it”.
Also included: a timeline of Morgan’s life of inventions, a bibliography for further study, and a detailed teacher’s guide for inspirational classroom assignments.

This is a powerful addition to every school and public library’s collection. I can’t wait for more from Joan DiCicco.

As a Black son of freed slaves born in the late 1800s, Garrett Morgan's life began full of obstacles. His immense creativity, tenacity, and fearlessness catapulted him to overcome so many obstacles throughout his life. DiCicco's lively language and pertinent details create an engaging and inspiring character for children (and adults) to get to know. DiCicco handles the delicate social and political hurdles with aplomb and her careful research shows. Morgan was unstoppable; I was rooting for him throughout the book. His forward thinking and extreme dedication to improving his own life and those around him is exciting to see jump off the page. The author's clever use of Morgan's own motto of overcoming obstacles throughout his life is effective and universal. Morgan may not have received the level of recognition and success he deserved during his lifetime. But this excellent documentation of his very worthy and impressive journey highlights the work of a tenacious, talented, and innovative man. His story deserves to be known!

I had seen a great Kirkus review so thought I would buy The Unstoppable Garrett Morgan for my 9-year-old grandson, Abe, who is often too active to want to settle down with a book.
When it arrived yesterday, I was delighted to discover how quickly I turned the pages to read about the dangers Mr. Morgan overcame to save the lives of thousands though his inventions. I was hopeful that the story may capture Abe's attention as well.
Today after school, even before I told Abe about the book, I discovered him on the couch, completely engrossed in the story. He read it cover to cover. When I asked what he thought, he said "It was really good!" Then we spent time talking about Mr. Morgan's inventions. Abe was especially impressed that the safety hood became the gas mask.
I believe this book will appeal to other children who can't always concentrate on a book. The story moves along at an exciting pace and the artwork does a lot to enhance the storyline. I am extremely pleased with this purchase.

I was moved by the combined words and illustrations, seeing a man who lived through a dark part of our history whose imagination and passion for knowledge spurred him to problem-solve and find answers with many of his inventions. I appreciated his determination in all facets of his life. The author's words are powerful and convey his persistence amid much adversity. The illustrator seemed to capture the mood of the era. I loved this book and plan to give copies to grandkids and others. In this age of polarity, this book of diversity, persistence and yes, patience, is important for kids and adults to read.
