Portrait of an Unknown Woman: A Novel (Gabriel Allon, 22) Hardcover – July 19, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
In a spellbinding new masterpiece by #1 New York Times bestselling author Daniel Silva, Gabriel Allon undertakes a high-stakes search for the greatest art forger who ever lived
Legendary spy and art restorer Gabriel Allon has at long last severed ties with Israeli intelligence and settled quietly in Venice, the only place where he has ever truly known peace. His beautiful wife, Chiara, has taken over the day-to-day management of the Tiepolo Restoration Company, and their two young children are discreetly enrolled in a neighborhood scuola elementare. For his part, Gabriel spends his days wandering the streets and canals of the watery city, bidding farewell to the demons of his tragic, violent past.
But when the eccentric London art dealer Julian Isherwood asks Gabriel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the rediscovery and lucrative sale of a centuries-old painting, he is drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse where nothing is as it seems.
Gabriel soon discovers that the work in question, a portrait of an unidentified woman attributed to Sir Anthony van Dyck, is almost certainly a fiendishly clever fake. To find the mysterious figure who painted it—and uncover a multibillion-dollar fraud at the pinnacle of the art world—Gabriel conceives one of the most elaborate deceptions of his career. If it is to succeed, he must become the very mirror image of the man he seeks: the greatest art forger the world has ever known.
Stylish, sophisticated, and ingeniously plotted, Portrait of an Unknown Woman is a wildly entertaining journey through the dark side of the art world—a place where unscrupulous dealers routinely deceive their customers and deep-pocketed investors treat great paintings as though they were just another asset class to be bought and sold at a profit. From its elegant opening to the shocking twists of its climax, the novel is a tour de force of storytelling and one of the finest pieces of heist fiction ever written. And it is still more proof that, when it comes to international intrigue and suspense, Daniel Silva has no equal.

Master spy Gabriel Allon has retired from The Office and moved to Venice with his wife Chiara, intending to spend time with family and resume his career as one of the world’s finest restorers of works of fine art. But then his longtime friend, art dealer Julian Isherwood, discovers that a $6.5 million painting he sold may just be a fake. Asking for Allon's help, he sends the former Israeli agent of many identities from Venice to Paris, to Bordeaux, to London, to New York (to name just a few) in pursuit of those threatening to completely undermine the credibility and trustworthiness of the world of fine art in pursuit of vast riches; and who engage in murder, mayhem, and the occasional bombing to accomplish their objectives.
It's a solidly written work featuring a wry sense of humor as well as deep dives into art history, art forgery, and the science of detecting what’s genuine and what’s not. It also takes readers on a first-class journey to some of the world’s finest museums, hotels, and restaurants; and features foods and wines to make the mouth water and references to music and architecture that nourish the soul.
A truly enjoyable mystery and thriller that should educate as well as amuse.
A London Old Master's art dealer, receives a letter from a French woman who claims a painting about to be sold, is a forgery because she owns the original Van Dyck. Before the dealer can have a tete a tete with the woman, she is murdered. The plot thickens as Allon investigates the murder and becomes embroiled in an effort to identify fake from real Old Masters and the high stakes Ponzi scheme involved in art forgery. This is one of the most cerebral of Silva's novels with the assumption that the reader is acquainted with the many artist names "dropped" by the author and the unique styles and characteristics of their works.
Throughout the novel, Allon relies upon former Mossad colleagues to share sophisticated spy technology with him. This seemed an unlikely plot event. Another point, which bears on the research underlining the book, is that Allon's wife, Chiara Zolli, would have to be the granddaughter not the daughter of the chief rabbi of Rome not Venice, whose name was Israel not Jacob as the author relates in his author's notes . If a reader is new to Silva's works, it would be tough for them to figure out how Allon knows these ancillary characters like the Corsican assassin Christopher Keller, his wife Sarah Bancroft, ex CIA operative, and Julian Isherwood, the London art dealer. Devoted readers know their pasts, but not a new reader. If may be time for Silva to take a new tack with his cast of characters.

I am so glad that Daniel Silva has returned Gabriel Allon to his other skill of art restoration. It's so much more appropriate for a man of his age but just as exciting as his previous job.
I truly enjoyed the wait and being reunited with mr Allon, Chiara and the cast of this book.
Nowi will have to wait until Mr Silva finish his next book (or reread some of the previously read books).
Please hurry, Mr Silva.
But this novel is really like the best Gabriel Allon novels. Now Allon is a newly defined figure, and a very interesting one. Now he is even ironic and seems more empatic. And the descriptions of the world of art dealers/smugglers/experts ist very well described. A really good read!
