Product Description
James Stewart gives one of his finest performances in the lighthearted film Harvey, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Stewart stars as the good-natured Elwood P. Dowd, whose constant companion is Harvey, a six-foot tall rabbit that only he can see. To his sister, Veta Louise (Academy Award® winner Josephine Hull), Elwood's obsession with Harvey has been a thorn in the side of her plans to marry off her daughter. When Veta Louise decides to put Elwood in a mental hospital, a hilarious mix-up occurs and she finds herself committed instead. It's up to Elwood to straighten out the mess with his kindly philosophy, and his "imaginary" friend, in this popular classic.

It's also remarkably universal: when I introduce it to younger friends well removed from its original context, it still works. Unlike so many things from that era, it's aged well, partially because it respects all of its characters--even the joke ones. It's hard to find any other movie made even fifty years later that centers on mental illness without making it a matter of buffoonery, scorn, or pearl-clutching. Sure, Harvey is real in-film but, as the characters almost come out and say at one point, it doesn't really matter if he is or isn't; even as a delusion, he causes no harm.
She was charmed. We liked it too.
James Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd, preferred companion of the titular Harvey? I'm sold. Stewart is soft spoken, philosophic, and charming. Everything else about the movie is just icing on the cake. (And there is a lot, including Josephine Hull as Elwood's sister and Jesse White as an attendant from the asylum. )
I always feel like part of a privileged group of insiders who understand Elwood isn't out of his head. He affects everyone who talks with him. And, as I mentioned, Harvey favors time spent with Elwood to that of others of his acquaintance. I can't say that I blame him.
I'm certain I will be very happy I've added this classic film to my collection !
If you own DVDs and are into classics, this should be in your library.
