Latin America

As part of the exchange programs at the University of Stuttgart, you have the opportunity to study at a partner university in Latin America for one or two semesters.

Planning and Preparation
Have a look at our website Planning and preparing your stay abroad. We provide you with all the important general information.

We are happy that you are interested in our exchange program to Latin America!

At the host institution, you are enrolled as a “full-time student without a degree” and are exempt from paying any tuition fees.
Most Latin American countries have not reorganized their higher education system in terms of Bachelor´s and Master´s programs. Instead, there is a 4-7-year 1st study cycle (pregrado/grado), which leads to the Licenciatura, and, based on that, a 2nd study cycle (posgrado), which usually takes two years and leads to the Maestría.
Exchange students are usually admitted to the 1st study cycle and may only take courses at this level.

Academic Calendars can differ significantly between the Latin American countries. For the exact semester dates, please refer to the academic calendar of your host institution.

Most Latin American countries have the following semester dates:

1st semester of the academic year: January/March – May/July
2nd semester of the academic year: July/August – December

In Mexico:
1st semester of the academic year: August – December
2nd semester of the academic year: January – June

Application deadlines:

  • 1st of February for a stay starting in July or August of the same year
  • 1st of July for a stay starting between January and March of the following year

In order to give you an overview of courses at host universities that have been recognized at the University of Stuttgart, we have compiled a list for you: Overview of previously recognized courses from abroad

Please note the following:

  1. You can find information about the recognition procedure at the University of Stuttgart at the Examination Office.
  2. The list is an indication of possible recognition of courses taken abroad. The final decision lies with the respective chairmen of the examination board.
  3. The information on the modules is based on the feedback of former exchange students. Only the information that we receive from the students is listed, which is why the module name or course title is sometimes missing.
  4. This list is not final, but will be updated and extended every semester.
  5. If partner universities do not appear in this list, it does not mean that courses cannot be recognized. Either the university has only recently become a partner university of the University of Stuttgart or we have not received any feedback from students yet. Another possibility is that students do not receive credit for their studies at the University of Stuttgart from abroad.
  6. You can filter the list by clicking on the corresponding arrow symbol.

Partner universities

Each of our partner universities offers exchange programs. The specifics of the partner universities are highlighted below (sorted by country)

Argentina is the third largest country in South America with a population of 45.2 million. The capital Buenos Aires, with its cosmopolitan flair, is considered the cultural center. If the hustle of the big city is too much for you, you can head out into the diverse natural surroundings. Whether it's the Atlantic coast, the mountain ranges of the Andes, tropical rainforests or desert landscapes, you'll find it all.

People in Argentina like to get together and are generally very open and interested in new things. So it is not uncommon for a short conversation to lead to an invitation to share an "Asado" or "Mate".

The national language is Spanish with the typical accent of Río-de-la-Plata. However, since people in Argentina like to talk a lot, you‘ll quickly get used to it.

Brazil is the country of superlatives, at least when it comes to size. It is the largest and with about 212 million inhabitants the most populous country on the continent. It is also the only Latin American country where Portuguese is spoken.

In addition to the largest economy in Latin America, Brazil has a diverse flora and fauna. This makes it one of the most biodiverse countries with the largest tropical rainforest in the world.

The Brazilians enjoy life a lot. This comes out above all in the popular sport of football or the samba rhythms of the famous carnival. They are very open, sociable and appreciate the beauty of life. This is especially evident in the term "Beleza", which translates as beauty. They use it the way the term "Ok" is used in Germany. Brazilians see an all-encompassing beauty everywhere, even in everyday life.

Chile is the longest country in the world with a length of about 4,300 kilometers and a width of about 180 kilometers. Most people live in the center of the country, where the capital Santiago de Chile is located. It is the political and spiritual center of the country. The city of Valparaíso is home to the country's most important port. It is best described as a colorful university city that serves as an inspiration for many arts.

Chile is a country of contrasts. The north, the Atacama Desert, is the driest area on earth, while the south is dominated by rainforests, lakes and glaciers.

Chileans are masters of fast speech, which means that words are often swallowed. This even goes so far that some claim it is no longer an accent, but a language of its own: "Chilean".

With about 51 million people, Colombia is the most populous country in Latin America after Brazil and Mexico. In the center of the country, at an altitude of about 2,640 meters, is the third highest capital city in the world: Bogotá. The metropolitan area is also very popular among cyclists because it has the largest network of cycle paths in South America.

The rainforest covers large parts of the country, resulting in a diverse flora and fauna. If you climb to the heights of the jungle, you will find the heart of Colombia: coffee cultivation. Centuries of tradition and a unique geographical location have brought the country worldwide fame for its coffee.

Colombians are very open-minded and sociable. The good humor mixed with temperament can be observed at the numerous festivals. You should not miss out on a chat with "Colombianos". In South America, they are known for speaking an accent-free and, above all, beautiful Spanish.

Mexico is the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world with about 127.6 million people. The so-called bridge to Central America is loud, colorful and cheerful. Besides Caribbean beaches and tropical jungle, Mexico has a rich cultural heritage.

It is the land of ancient advanced civilizations such as those of the Maya and Aztecs. Even today, the influence of indigenous elements is still strong and is often incorporated into literature, music and art. The importance of cultural tradition is also evident in the language. In addition to the official language Spanish, there are 62 indigenous national languages that are still spoken by about 7% of the population.

In Mexico City as well as in Guadalajara, people like to dance and eat a lot. Whether in the family circle or at the many atmospheric street festivals, it never gets boring.

"Oh how beautiful is Panama...". This phrase still applies to the small country in Central America. Here it is possible to see the sunrise while enjoying the view of two oceans at the same time.

It captivates with its pure natural beauty and diverse wildlife. The numerous national parks with their cloud forests hold an unknown world full of exotic animals and plants.

Panama City is a lively capital that manages to combine old and new like no other. In addition to tropical rainforests and glass skyscrapers, you will also find one of the most spectacular structures of our time: the Panama Canal. This is one of the most important waterways in the world and an important source of income for the country.

Whoever comes to Panama not only notices the warmth of the "Panameños" but also their love for their country. Anyone who lives in the "here and now" and likes it more relaxed will certainly feel very comfortable in Panama.

Peru is the third largest country in South America in terms of area and can be divided into three major landscapes. The Amazon lowlands in the east, the central Andes region and the narrow coastal strip on the Pacific.

The Andean country is home to many natural but also cultural treasures. The most famous example are the buildings of the ancient Incas. Especially the so-called City in the Clouds, better known as Machu Picchu which attracts countless visitors from all over the world each year. The way through the Andes leads past small hillside terraces and high mountain pastures occupied by grazing llamas and alpacas.

Peru has a large indigenous population of about 50% of the total population. Just under a third of the total population lives in the capital Lima. Peruvians themselves are cheerful and enjoy life to the fullest. This is illustrated by the colorfulness of traditional Peruvian dresses and markets.
