Despite the success of My Best Friend's Wedding, Aussie director P.J. Hogan certainly hasn't gone Hollywood. Unconditional Love, co-written with his wife and fellow filmmaker Jocelyn Moorhouse, is a deeply eccentric concoction that ranges from campy comedy to murder mystery. If the whole thing doesn't really come off, it does have much that is funny, giddy, or simply weirder than all-get-out. Kathy Bates enjoys herself as a discarded wife who impulsively flies to England to attend the funeral of her idol, a beloved singer--Jonathan Pryce, in glorious sequined form. Meeting his "valet" (read: secret gay lover), Rupert Everett, she determines to find the dead man's murderer. It's hard to get the tone right on this kind of movie, but it's also easy to like a film that finds time for tributes to Barry Manilow (hey, Hogan rehabilitated ABBA in Muriel's Wedding) and the reassuring spirit of Julie Andrews. --Robert Horton

Kathy Bates is such a phenomenal actor; she embodies whatever she plays and you forget you're watching an actress and believing you're witnessing a real person living their life instead of a performance. Of course, the supporting cast is absolutely stellar as well.
The plotline plays out a little slow in some parts, but it is so fun to lose yourself in this adventure, it doesn't matter. After streaming the film at least once a year, I just went ahead and bought it so I could have access to it whenever I get a fix.
It is one of those movies I like to revisit, because I love the characters and their dynamics with one another. I find myself missing them if too much time as passed.
Grace begins to explore what unconditional love means as she realizes she can make her own way in iife. It's a movie about the courage to move forward, and about being one's authentic self, about caring and about helping friends, about grieving, and about having a few laughs too. It's also about change, believing in oneself, and taking chances. It is a very enjoyable film. Several guest stars appear in this film, including Julie Andrews, Sally Jessy Raphael, Lynn Redgrave, and.........BARRY MANILOW! Has a cute "feel-good" ending, too.

I loved this film from beginning to end, and it will help me to keep in my heart my dream of singing with Barry Manilow one day.
If Grace can do it, so can I.
The story revolves around Grace, middle aged American housewife and fan of the crooner Victor Fox. When Fox is murdered, she travels to his funeral in England, meets his gay lover Dirk, and the two set out together to hunt down his killer.
Kathy Bates is wonderful as the frumpy middle aged American "home maker" Grace whose whole life revolves around pop idol Victor Fox, played by a glitter-suited Jonathan Pryce, who is only surpassed in the department of pop star parody by the utterly un-besuited Bill Nighy in Love Actually. Priceless. Or should that be pryceless? Meredith Eaton is absolutely gorgeous as Maudey and plays the 'dwarf with an attitude' with panache, standing beside and up to eight foot tall Rupert Everett. Hilarious! Everett, rather unkempt for once, and not the snooty member of the English upper class he plays so often, has a few good moments early on in the film, but seems a little embarrassed towards the end. I can't blame him, his character (and he as an actor) deserves better. Dan Aykroyd turns in a solid performance as Grace's long suffering husband, Lynn Redgrave had me in stitches as the uptight English sister of the Pryce character, and Julie Andrews gleefully parodies herself in a couple of cameos, breaking into song at every opportunity.
Watch this for a bit of a laugh, smile at the end, and don't start looking for fault with it (because you will find it if you do). Not the greatest film ever made, but quite enjoyable. It was cheap and cheerful, and provided light entertainment and a bit of escapism for an evening.
