Good Night, Cinderella
claudio_carvalho20 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
While traveling on vacation through the country of Northeastern of Brazil by bus, the American Alex Trubituan (Josh Duhamel), his sister Bea Tribituan (Olivia Wilde) and their friend Amy Harrington (Beau Garrett) meet the also foreigners Pru Stagler (Melissa George), Finn Davies (Desmond Askew) and Liam Kuller (Max Brown) after an accident with their bus. They follow a track through the woods and find a hidden paradisiacal beach. They decide to stay in the place drinking beer and dancing funk and parting with the locals and they meet the amicable Brazilian teenager Kiko (Agles Steib). They are drugged with "Bom Dia, Cinderela" (translation: Good Morning, Cinderella - a trick used by smalltime crooks to steal naive people) and when they wake up, they are practically naked, with all their belongings, clothes, money, jewels, passports, backpacks etc. stolen. They walk to a small village trying to find a police station, they get into trouble with the dwellers and they are helped by their acquaintance Kiko, who leads them to his uncle's isolated well-equipped cabin in the woods to wait for the next bus two days later. Along the night, Kiko's "uncle" arrives with his friends and the group discloses the sinister intentions of the newcomers.

When "Turistas" was released, there was a huge campaign in Brazil to boycott this movie because it showed a bad, distorted and stereotyped image of Brazil. I have just seen this film on DVD, I am Brazilian, and I totally disagree with this position. First of all, "Turistas" is fictional, based on the urban legend or reality of traffic of human organs, and the story takes place in Brazil the same way this theme is approached in London in Stephen Frears's "Dirty Pretty Things" or the violent "Hostel" is in Slovakia. Second, director John Stockwell seems to be absolutely familiarized with the usual behavior of simple people from the Northeastern of Brazil and the way of thinking of average tourists. They give hospitality to tourists, they are friendly, they like to party and dance, the prices of food and lodging are very low, the bus drivers do not respect the traffic laws, even the use of drug to rob incautious tourists, therefore he discloses the reality in a magnificent landscape. Further, there are many funny lines in Portuguese. The sinister theme has a good and logical approach and the performances are great and realistic, only the conclusion is weak in the plot. Of course the fate of the backpackers is fictional and the possibility of an incident like this happen is practically null. Welcome to Brazil, actually a nice place to be visited. My vote is seven.

Suspenseful Survival In Brazilian Paradise.
drownsoda9027 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I was really shocked when I logged onto IMDb and saw the user rating for this film at a 3.2 out of 10. You've got to be joking me!? This film wasn't even close to being that bad. I'd say that it deserves at least a 5 out of 10 average, but I personally would give it much higher of a rating. "Turistas" follows siblings Alex (Josh Duhamel) and Bea (Olivia Wilde) and Bea's friend Amy (Beau Garrett), who are traveling in the beautiful country of Brazil. After being in a near-deadly bus crash, they meet another traveler, Pru (Melissa George) and two European brothers, and decide to head down to a popular beach spot while waiting for another bus. They end up staying longer and partying all night, but awaken on the beach and realize they were drugged. After getting in trouble with some locals, they go with a man who they met on the beach, Kiko, to a secluded house in the jungle to spend the night. Little do they know, a psychopathic surgeon is awaiting their arrival, and they have been lured there to become unwilling organ donors for other Brazilians who are awaiting transplants through the black market.

I have to say that I was actually really pleased with "Turistas". The ridiculously low user rating is a mystery to me, because as far as I'm concerned this was an above-average horror film that is much better than the most recent entries in the genre. Often compared with "Hostel" (but much more similar to "Wolf Creek" if you ask me), this film is light years better in my opinion, this was a really entertaining film. The plot isn't entirely original - young adults pursued by a psycho in a foreign country. It's been done before, many times, but the tropical setting and the twisting of the plot (mainly the reason the tourists are being killed) really makes this film stand out. Rather than a slasher movie, this is much more of a survival horror film, and a suspenseful one at that. The pacing was nicely plotted as well and I was never uninterested, always a good thing. The tension slowly builds during the first forty minutes or so, and after that all hell breaks loose. Another thing that really made this movie stand out from others though was the setting - the crystal clear waters, misty jungles, and amazing Brazilian beaches were beautiful. While it may not be your typical horror film setting, it's made use of here and is some great eye candy. I also have to mention the underwater cave sequences, which were amazing to look at but also really claustrophobic. I couldn't even imagine being in the petrifying situations these characters endured.

Surprisingly the acting in the film was really good also. Josh Duhamel, an up and coming new star, is the male lead/older brother and plays the part well. Melissa George (of the "Amityville Horror" remake) is an Australian traveler who becomes friends with the group, and she was excellent. Olivia Wilde plays Duhamel's younger sister, and Beau Garrett plays her friend. I thought all of the acting was actually very believable, and while some of the more minor characters were a little underdeveloped, the characters and the actors playing them were all very good. My only real complaint about the film would be a couple editing issues. There were a couple of times that I was confused as to what was going on and the time could have been addressed more clearly, but overall these were very minor problems that had no effect on the film. Unlike other films similar to this, "Turistas" isn't over done in the gore department - there's enough suspense and sufficient shocks to keep the film scary. Granted there are a few gross-out scenes, but nothing as ridiculously violent (and unbelievable) as what you'd find in "Hostel".

Overall, "Turistas" is a suspenseful, surprisingly believable, and very fun horror movie. It has some slick imagery and a beautiful setting, plus the storyline is really well written. Some may call it a rip off of "Hostel", but I personally think it was heaps better - some may strongly disagree, but I thought "Hostel" was pure garbage. Anyway, the point is if you like intense survival horror movies, "Turistas" could be a really nice treat. Ignore the currently low user rating, this film isn't even remotely as bad as it's made out to be. A solid 8/10, pushing a 9.

good first half
SnoopyStyle28 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Alex (Josh Duhamel), his sister Bea (Olivia Wilde) and her friend Amy (Beau Garrett) are traveling in Brazil. Their bus goes off the road stranding everybody. They and Englishmen Finn (Desmond Askew) and Liam (Max Brown), and Australian Pru (Melissa George) who speaks fluent Portuguese decide to go to the beach and find two more tourists at the bar. They are drugged and robbed. The two other tourists are kidnapped and killed during an attempted escape. The six new friends get help from Kiko who takes them to an isolated cabin. They are taken prisoner by Dr. Zamora who intends to harvest the rich gringos' organs for the poor of Rio de Janeiro.

The first half is pretty good. I would have simplified it by making all characters friends. It would make them more emotionally connected to each other. It would also make the final three less obvious. The first half has the tension of traveling in a foreign land. The chaos in the village is pretty good. The organ harvesting is so idiotic. The three girls are more likely to be sex trafficked and everybody is worth more for ransom anyways. It's a silly made up fear that makes little sense. The final chase in the water is too chaotic and hard to decipher. This is no great horror but it's got some B-movie goodness.

How many times characters wont stick to the main roads or avoid beverages without sealed caps.
Fella_shibby18 April 2021
I first saw this in 2007 on a dvd which I own.

Revisited it recently.

Agree its the same old stuff in new settings but the film has some amazing under water sequences, nice locations, good babes n it is a bit frightening, especially after the detailed evisceration sequence.

Mind you, it is not at all a Hostel rip off. I hated Hostel as it is pure torture porn. This one is like a survival thriller.

The cage scenes are shot in darkness and one cannot make out what is going on. Also what happens to the character Liam is never shown. (He decides to stay behind to fight back, only to be shot in the leg and captured). But aft how the movie ended, one expected to see the fate of Liam.

It wasn't that bad!
iheart_ny7 January 2007
I just saw this and I had extraordinarily low expectations, but I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought it would.

I thought the "Scarier than Hostel!" bit that they were using to promote it was corny and dumb, because a lot of people, including me, hated Hostel. But Turistas is better viewed when you're not expecting it to be that great. There were a few parts I thought were somewhat dumb, but the acting isn't bad. All of the actors are in their late 20's to early 30's, which I thought was good because I did NOT want to see another dumb teen-driven horror flick. But I don't see Turistas as a horror movie. It was a thriller that was actually somewhat scary, which is something that suspense movies these days lack terribly.

The parts I didn't like about it were overlookable. Like in the underwater scenes, I thought the acting could have been a little better, but in the long run, Turistas isn't a failure. I think there are much worse movies that could be on the Bottom 100, like Lady In The Water, for example. So, if Turistas is showing now at a 2nd-run house near you, you should go see it. Hopefully you won't hate it as much as typical IMDb folk do. They're all idiots, anyway.

I've seen a lot worse
movieman_kev18 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
A group of backpacking tourists are vacationing in Brazil. Their bus breaks down and they're greeted by some very unpleasant locals. Even though the acting wasn't up to par and the story was trite, unoriginal, and cliché, there was a few scenes that work for this movie. The Underwater cavern being the most obvious standout. I also really liked that the ending didn't go the extremely over-done route of leaving it open for a sequel (which is,by the way, the MOST overused idea in all of Horrordom) The movie doesn't stand up to multiple viewings at all. But it was a suitably enough rainy day time-waster. Not as bad as it you'd think.

My Grade: C

Eye Candy: Lucy Ramos shows T&A; and Beau Garrett gets topless

Fun
McBitter8 January 2007
'Turistas' was a fun horror flick with a 'Hostel' like plot. The characters were pretty likable along with the film itself. It had some good gory scenes which included a disturbing open surgery scene.

I am really confused about why people hated this film so much. When I saw this with a friend, we were both expecting a stupid b flick with cheesy acting. We were both surprised at the end, it didn't entirely suck! It had an OK script, OK actors, cool scenes, a fun plot, and gruesome gore. I admit, it wasn't a masterpiece but it was not horrible! I have seen much, much, much worse!

Something that does tick me off about this films bad ratings is that the Brazilians are rating it bad because they think this film will lower their tourist numbers. They are wrong, people still go to the beach(Jaws) and still go to European countries(Hostel). Its just a horror flick.

So you should go see this if you like fun B horror flicks.

Exotic horror pic that emphasizes suspense
fertilecelluloid14 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
John Stockwell's "Turistas" mines territory recently visited by "Hostel", but it substitutes Brazil for Europe. A bunch of young tourists from Australia, the UK, and the US, are left high and dry when the bus they are traveling in is destroyed and their personal effects are stolen. There are no points for guessing what happens next. There are elements of "Dr. Butcher MD" in this beautifully shot horror pic that lavishes attention on the hot bodies of its female stars. It is not as violent or as gory as the recent "Texas Chainhsaw Massacre - The Beginning", but director Stockwell (who played Arnie's best friend in "Christine") does a great job of building the suspense. By intercutting the situation the turistas are facing with what the bad guys are up to, Stockwell creates an atmosphere of impending dread and hopelessness. There is a gory scene in which a stomach is cut open in graphic detail ("Men Behind The Sun"-style) and organs are removed, and there are also a couple of vicious assaults, but the name of the game here is tension. Some of the underwater material is gorgeous to look at, recalling the mood of Argento's "Inferno", and the jungle setting is unsettling. Although the film runs out of steam towards the end and spends a bit too much time underwater, it is, nevertheless, a very decent horror pic set in an exotic milieu and enhanced by some gruesome, realistic scenes of violence.

Trouble in Paradise
henrik-22518 January 2007
I saw this movie despite it's bad rating, and I must say that it wasn't at all bad. Good production values, great soundtrack and a somewhat believable story. I think a lot of people would've found it better had they not expected a horror movie. Sure there's blood and guts in it, but it's more of an adventure-movie in the sense that the good-guys, bad-guys ratio evens things up. What it does lack however is a satisfying ending and a subplot that would given an added depth to the characters. I still think it deserves a 5 rating as it's different than most movies, it doesn't follow the standard 'stupid-people walking straight into doom' recipe. It's beautifully shot at locations that I'd love to see in real life. It did get a notch or two higher for the effort. If the last 15 minutes of it had been a bit more scary and gruesome I'd definitely would've given it a 6 or a 7. If you are after a Texas Chainsaw-kind of deal you are most likely looking in the wrong direction, but if you are not, then this might tickle the fright in you just enough for it to be worth renting.

This is a slightly above average horror movie with some good gore and kill scenes
kevin_robbins4 February 2022
Turistas (2006) is a movie I saw an advance screening of ages ago and recently watched again on Tubi. The storyline follows a group of tourists in Brazil whose tour bus breaks down and they decide to continue their trip on foot. As they get off the beaten path they find more fun than they could ever imagine but then wake up the next day to their worst nightmare.

This movie is directed by John Stockwell (Dark Tide) and stars Josh Duhamel (Transformers), Melissa George (Hunted), Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy), Desmond Askew (Go), Max Brown (The Tudors) and Beau Garrett (Tron: Legacy).

The settings and circumstances are well established in this and the cast is pretty solid. The storyline is cliche and straightforward but still fun to watch unfold. There's also some comedy mixed in here and there, the prostitution scene always cracks me up. I did like how they did the drug scenes and the kill sequences and gore are very solid. There's a machete scene in this I always love. There's a good use of a staple gun in this as well; and to be honest, there's some surgery scenes that make me woozy. The use of underwater scenes was a bit too much but the circumstances overall felt realistic.

Overall this is a slightly above average horror movie with some good gore and kill scenes. This is definitely worth a viewing for horror enthusiasts that I would score a 5.5-6/10.

i really liked it
disdressed1212 April 2008
this movie was way better than i thought it would be.i had very low expectations, but i was pleasantly surprised.it had some story development to it.once it gets going,it continually builds suspense and tension, and even gets exciting.there is also a definite atmosphere of panic and fear in the movie and the characters.when we find out what's in store for our characters,it's not quite what you think.there is a bit of graphic violence and gore, but nothing gratuitous.the trailers for the movie are bit misleading and do not do it justice.they make the movie out to be similar to Hostel, when it is much different and a much better movie.i found Hostel to be nothing but blood and guts just for the sake of blood and guts.it served no purpose. With Turistas, the violence and gore served the story.for me,Turistas is an 8/10

Thin, familiar and reveals its hand way too soon.
The_Film_Cricket10 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
*** SPOILER ALERT ***

Turistas opens with a scene that is effectively chilling, but none-the-less completely destroys any mystery or suspense that the rest of the film might have been able to generate. A woman lies in a room strapped to a table, whimpering and begging for her life. In a few short edits we understand why she is there and what her captors are doing to her. Having that knowledge, the mystery of the film has been spelled out for us. We know what is stirring around the film's central characters at every single moment for the rest of the story. This would be the equivalent of Hitchcock telling us everything about Norman Bates in a pre-credits sequence.

The suspense that the film would have generated without the scene is really quite good. Six tourists: Three Americans, two Brits and an Australian woman are on vacation in Brazil, on their way to the northeastern beaches. They decide not to fly but instead take a bus. The bus' driver begins driving erratically and finally drives the bus over a cliff. Luckily, everyone is able to first bail out through the windows. With no transportation, the kids head off down the road and find a nice beach with a bar serving drinks. They do a little partying with the natives, drinking and dancing, until they notice that they are getting . . . a little woozy.

They wake up the next morning to find that they've been robbed, but also that something else is up. Hopelessly lost, they wander around the island trying to find help. But their partying the night before leads them in the direction of some local individuals who are in a business that is hazardous to the health of our heroes. More I can't say, except that watching the rest of the film, I was stunned at how good the suspense was and disappointed that I already knew the film's secret. When the kids find and empty house and open the cabinets and doors, we already know what everything means and what the owner of that house is up to.

One element that does maintain its suspense is the presence of a native named Kiko (Agles Steib), who has a sweet-face and a shy manner that endears him to these tourists. He seems like the nicest guy in the world, but for a long time we aren't sure if we can trust him. When he takes the kids swimming in some underwater caves, there's a nervous gleam in his eyes that makes us wonder if he's helping his new friends or leading them into a trap.

Once the kids are aware of what is going on (too late for at least one of them) there is some semblance of morality to the villain, a doctor who is doing a noble thing but going about it in exactly the wrong way. Given some rewrites on the script, Turistas might have been in league with films like Return to Paradise or Extreme Measures, films that build suspense on the backs of real-life issues. As it plays out, this is just one more piece of gore porn, with chases and shoot-outs and pretty bodies. The closing scene is one of that standard chase-around-the-island scenes that we've seen a million times before, and seems to go on and on until whatever suspense was building has long since drained out.

Turistas was directed by John Stockwell, a former teen actor whom you might have seen in the 80s in films like Christine and My Science Project. As a director he specializes in making films about beautiful young people in pretty locations. He directed Crazy/Beautiful, Blue Crush and Into the Blue. He makes good films, but he has yet to make a great one. With Turistas, I just wish he would have rethought his screenplay. As it stands, it is thin, familiar and reveals its hand way too soon.

Not as bad as people make it out to be!
lindz_ox8 December 2006
I really came into this movie hardly knowing a thing about it except I've heard a million people telling me it was terrible and the 3. something rating on here made me think this was going to be laughably bad but it really wasn't.

I'm surprised this movie didn't do better! I mean its nothing more than average even know I thought it did have some originality. Any average horror/slasher fan would probably enjoy it, it's no worse than wolf creek or hostel. The film did a good job of setting their tones, they did a good job at pacing and they managed to do a good job with the intensity. The camera works a little frustrating at first but you get used to it and it ends up working for the film. The deaths and special effects aren't the most amazing at looking realistic but they did a good job with their budget. I also really liked how they developed the characters in this but they could use less gore, I mean I know thats whats getting the audience for some reason lately but it didn't feel necessary and they kept a gross scene on for just too long.

Overall, Don't get me wrong this movie isn't excellent but its not as bad as everyones saying it is. If you liked wolf creek, hostel, into the blue, or the descent then you'll probably enjoy this, it's worth a look.

Why the bad rating ???
Ronald_James_Corbin2 July 2007
I almost was not going to see this movie because it was giving such a bad rating by so many.

I don't know why though. I watched the movie and it was very very good.

It had a great story line that was believable and made it more creepy. When something exciting was not happening it had great visuals of Brazil. It had some intense scenes also. It also had a lot of shocking parts u would not expect. I really liked this movie. Better then hostel definitely.

It shouldn't have a bad rating. At least should have a 7 or 8. Worth watching.

If you want to see hot chicks in bikinis, beautiful scenery of Brazil along with some petrifying situations, this movie is for you
the-movie-guy30 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
(Synopsis) A group of young tourists traveling by bus in the mountains of Brazil are unhurt when their bus is involved in an accident. Alex (Josh Duhamel), his sister Bea (Olivia Wilde), and her best friend Amy (Beau Garrett) hear about a cabana bar just down the road from passersby and decide to go to the bar instead of waiting for the next bus to arrive. They find the bar on an alluring beach. The women put their bikinis on and run into the water with the men behind them. They are having the time of their lives in the sun and surf. When night falls, they begin to party with the locals by drinking and dancing all night. They awaken with their faces in the sand the next morning and discover that the bar is deserted and all of their possessions have been stolen. They start walking to the next town where they meet Kiko (Agles Steib), who takes them to his uncle's house, which just happens to be a 10-hour trek in the jungle. Kiko shows them a beautiful underwater cavern with air pockets that they dive into and begin to explore. What they don't know is their adventure in paradise is about to become a terrifying one.

(My Comment) If you want to see three hot chicks in bikinis the whole movie and beautiful scenery of Brazil along with some petrifying situations and gory blood scenes, this is one movie to see. The storyline has its share of action and chase scenes with great suspense. If you are claustrophobic about being underwater and inside a cave, you will not like some of the scenes, because you will find yourself gasping for air as if you were there. The scene where Amy is being operated on is so graphic that you may want to turn your head. This horror thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat, because you won't know what is going to happen next. I know that this movie has convinced me that I don't ever want to go to Brazil. However, if you do go to Brazil, my advice to you is to take the plane, not the bus. (Fox Atomic, Run time 1:29, Rated R)(8/10)

good horror flick
loudglbc30 July 2007
Watched it last night, with pretty much no great expectations of it. Maybe a scare or too, but I really was expecting poor acting. Yet, to my surprise the movie holds its own very nicely. Good acting by all, the girls were cute, with some decent nudity as well, which always adds a little to a good horror flick. The best thing about this movie was its ability to use Paranoia. Not necessarily the Hitchcock form, but still for a big budget horror movie, its vibe and atmosphere is very solid. I found myself being a little scared, for no apparent reason, which is a good thing for a horror/slasher to do. overall, good movie, good young acting, great scares, and just a cool movie to chill and watch with some friends. check it out.

Go home....before you buy your ticket
NateF8829 November 2006
Without making this review to long, I just want to say that Turistas starts off well, and then goes way downhill once the "horror" begins. The opening half of the movie is very well developed. It draws out it's characters well, sets up moments of suspense for the horrors that will come, and keeps the viewer interested due to it's beautiful cinematography.

Once the terror and violence actually begin (which doesn't happen until the last third of the movie no less) it goes way downhill. For one, it was marketed as a torture movie, but there is barely any of it! Sure, there's a brutal killing here and there, but when it came to gore, this film was very tame. Second, the cinematography in during the night scenes was awful, with the chase scenes and violence barely viewable. You could not tell what was happening on screen, and all of the viewers of the film were lost with what was going on. Third, the last third was extremely predictable. You could tell who was going to die and when. The main villain (who ironically looks like the President of Iran) is not well drawn out, and the "climax" of the film is pitiful.

There is however, fine acting jobs done by all involved, and a particular death scene that made me squirm in my seat due to its brutality and intensity. When the chase scenes and violence were actually viewable (of which it rarely was) it actually was pretty intense. However, the actual deaths were not (save one or two), and the dumb decisions made by all of the characters may be the stupidest yet to grace the screen this year.

It's sad. Turistas had potential. It started off great, but just went in the wrong direction I guess. I have never seen a movie that fell so much on its rear.

Less gore than Hostel but better script/adventure
dvpumas3 February 2008
I do not fancy horror movie (usually fall asleep) and would rate all horror movies below 4 because of their lack of script. Therefore, I've rated this one comparing it to other horror movies (hence the 8).

The main problem of this movie was its promotion. It did sell itself as a gore movie and put itself in the same category of Hostel. But this is not the case. If you really want to see a gore movie, with torture, blood and gross stuff for the major part of the film, go and see Hostel (I personally found the plot in Hostel interesting but the rest of the movie too unrealistic and kept laughing most of the time)

The acting in Turistas is quite good and contrary to what other comments wrote, this is quite realistic and nobody is really making stupid choices. The "good guys" are not the usual stupid ones with the "Ok, let's split in small groups !" kind of line and most of their decisions are taken because there is no apparent danger or because the danger yet is obliging them to take a specific route. The villains are not all heartless whose unique goal is to kill people just because, well.... they are the villains

I wouldn't classified this movie as a gore/horror one but would definitely put it in the adventure/horror category. Please note, that there are some gore moments as seen in Hostel but the difference is that they do not take the major part of the movie. The adventure is quite good and if you have claustrophobia or plan to travel to Brazil I wouldn't recommend Turistas. They are 2 or 3 mistakes in the scripts such as things that are not there and then appear from nowhere but I won't spoil the movie telling more.

I noticed that some comments wrote that there was a dark part where you don't see anything. Once again, this movie is quite realistic and they did not switch on the light in the middle of the jungle but you can see what's going on (I saw it on DVD not at the cinema, I remember watching Superman Returns at the cinema and not being able to see what was going on at the end). Finally, this is true that the end in not unpredictable but this is not the kind of movie where I would expect a twist at the end. Simply because I found it quite realistic (But I would still go back to Brazil !!!).

Brazil Nuts!
hitchcockthelegend18 October 2015
After their bus crashes while touring in Brazil, a group of young adults find themselves in a world of misery...

Not ever likely to be watched by members of the Brazilian Tourist Board, Turistas (AKA: Paradise Lost) is a whole mixed bag of a movie. Narratively it has been done before, a bunch of pretty types end up coming face to face with criminals and psychopaths in a land they don't know and barely understand.

The build up to the horror elements is slow, and for some horror fans it takes too long. Yet conversely it's good that the makers have afforded time for the characterisations to build, allowing for some humour, some drama and an insight into a multi national group dynamic. You may not much care what happens to them, but at least you know them!

Actually filmed on location in Brazil, there's a lot of mother nature's natural beauty (and her tough terrain at times) on show, all neatly photographed by Enrique Chediak (28 Weeks Later/127 Hours). However, the trump card is the underwater sequences, which are superbly put together, including a thrilling extended chase sequence that lifts the film out of horror/thriller averageville.

There's messages in the mix that valiantly try to make a point, but they get lost as things go a bit cuckoo. Yet there's enough good craft on show, and a horror sequence guaranteed to make you squirm, to make this worth a viewing. It is a good bit better than what some of the hate poured on it suggests, though the caveat is that horror fans should know it only gets into horror territory late in the day. 6/10

Surprisingly good

I agree with McGreysFan, this film is much better than you would expect. It is not a horror it is a thriller and I suspect that the reason it has been rated so low is that the people voting on it are of the 18-24 demographic.

this is a good thriller, not a slash and splatter horror, which I am not in to really because they are always a bunch of dumb teens running around and screaming. Terrible acting with no real story.

This film had good acting, a good story and I enjoyed it, I almost didn't watch it because I was put off by the IMDb rating of it. One thing though, the English guy Finn I think his name was, man did he do my head in, I am English and I found him incredibly annoying.

As a comparison I would say this film was much better than Hostel which I would give a 2 this I would rate as a five. It was an adult film. A decent thriller with which I was pleasantly surprised.

Perfect for fans of intense survival thrillers.
Nightman856 March 2009
The horror genre is really turning off people to traveling!

Tourists in Brazil find themselves robbed, stranded, and now being led into a deadly trap. Enter some shady characters desperate for some black market body parts...

Turistas is a swiftly moving thriller that really grabs one from the beginning and only grows more intense throughout. At the same time the film really avoids the horror clichés very nicely and turns out a twisted and unpredictable story. While comparisons between Turistas and Eli Roth's Hostel are inevitable, this little horror ride actually has much more in common with the excellent 2005 horror film Wolf Creek. Much like that film, Turistas is a thriller that relies upon suspense and tension rather than on brutal violence and gore. Although it does have its share of cringe-worthy moments with some occasional graphic images. Also Turistas is slickly filmed in a kind of documentary style that makes the occurrences on screen all the more believable - and more startling. The filming locations are fantastic, the story is very edgy, the cast is solid, and the suspense is well-crafted.

In short, those that enjoy gripping horror films (like High Tension, Wolf Creek, Hostel, etc.) will find this film a worthy ride. It's one of the best sleeper-horror films we've seen this year!

Surprising

I was really upset when my boyfriend wanted to spend twenty bucks on this movie, but now I have changed my opinion.

I was expecting a Hostel rip-off cause that is what everyone said it was. But it was NOTHING like Hostel. It had OK acting, and pretty good character development.

Now I am all for bloody, violent, disgusting, vulgar horror movies. But I was glad to see this one wasn't really a horror movie, more of a thriller. The amount of violence was good. Anything more would have been simply for shock value, and I was glad to see a story survive without too much shock value. The pace of the film kept you interested, and the twists (although somewhat predictable) were fun to watch and kept you wondering what was next.

I personally liked watching this movie. I don't see why everyone ripped on it so much. To anyone who likes a good horror movie, or a good thriller, give this one a chance, and you might like it!

It's a fun film
danielmanson6 March 2021
I saw this was trending on Netflix so I took a punt on it and it annoys me to say that it suckered me in It's a fun little film that does keep you in suspense throughout.

The first 20 mins or so I'm thinking oh god. Acting isn't exactly brilliant, the characters are just annoying me, nothing seems to be going on. And bam, towards the end I'm fully invested in what's going to happen next and how it ends.

So I'll start by naming my negatives towards this film: The ending, although answers everything you need, just felt a bit underwhelming. It's hard to say why, but I didn't feel the emotions I should have done when it finished. The final "fight" if you will lasted far too long as well, which didn't help. Character depth was very low. I genuinely can't remember the names of half of them as they would just say a line or 2 and sod off for a bit. When depth isn't there, you don't feel the emotions you need when they die/survive. Slow start. Yeah, it just took far too long to actually get going. You're sat waiting for the impeding problems to occur and it doesn't. It just feels like an adventure film.

But yeah, overall though I was entertained by it and I'm quite happy I chose it. I will say that there isn't much in terms of "horror" (I know Netflix say it's a horror film), there's some heavy gore here and there, but that's about it. Overall though 6/10 from me. Worth a cheeky punt.

PS, if you've seen (not a spoiler). Why did they take the Swedish couple at the beginning, but nobody else? Them as characters just seemed pointless filler.

Worthwhile horror shocker
Woodyanders8 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
A motley assortment of tourists vacationing in Brazil find themselves trapped in a remote beachside area after their bus gets totaled in a roadside accident. The tourists' lives are put in considerable jeopardy when they venture deep into the jungle and run afoul of a lethal and illegal human organ ring run by the bitter and ruthless Zamora (a superbly chilling portrayal by Miguel Lunardi), who plans on using the tourists as unwilling donors. Director John Stockwell, working from an intriguing script by Michael Arlen Ross, relates the absorbing story at a steady pace, delivers a vivid evocation of the exotic and flavorsome location, ably creates and sustains a strong atmosphere of dread and unease, and builds a substantial amount of gut-kicking suspense (a gripping and nerve-wracking chase set piece set in an underwater cave is especially tense and thrilling). Moreover, Stockwell does a fine job of slowly allowing the initially breezy and carefree tone to become more increasingly dark and grim as the frightfully plausible story unfolds and pulls out all the ferocious stops in the brutal and harrowing last third. The attractive and appealing cast play the well-drawn and engaging characters with real skill and conviction, with stand-out work by Josh Duhamel as the grumpy Alex, Melissa George as the sweet Pru, Olivia Wilde as Alex's sunny younger sister Bea, Desmond Askew as the whiny and sarcastic Finn, Max Brown as Finn's jolly mate Liam, Beau Garrett as the brash Amy, and Agles Steib as amiable local Kiko. The luscious Lucy Ramos has a small, yet sexy role (and bares her insanely fine body!) as enticing tart Arolea. The startling moments of harsh and unflinching violence pack a pretty wicked punch, with an unforgettably nasty sequence in which a still conscious gal gets savagely eviscerated by Zamora rating as the definite stomach-churning highlight. In addition, this picture even makes an interesting and relevant point about how sleazy tourists use and abuse the locals and hence deserve to be victimized by Zamora. Best of all, there's no silly and obtrusive humor to detract from the severity of the unsparingly harsh and sadistic horror. Enrique Chediak's gorgeous widescreen cinematography offers plenty of breathtaking shots of the beautiful countryside. Paul Haslinger's shuddery and hypnotic score likewise hits the shivery spot. A solid and satisfying movie.

Bikini babes vs bloodthirsty Brazilians.
BA_Harrison27 May 2007
Following in the wake of the mediocre Hostel and the disappointing Wolf Creek comes Turistas, a slightly better (although still unexceptional) 'vacation in hell' horror movie that follows a bunch of travellers who wind up wishing that they'd booked a fortnight in Ibiza for their hols, rather than roughing it in Brazil.

After narrowly escaping with their lives when their bus veers out of control and crashes down a hill, a group of '20-somethings' seeking sun, sea and sex in South America head for a nearby beach where they discover a party paradise: golden sand, blue sea, and a bar where they can hang out with like-minded backpackers and locals.

After a hard night drinking and dancing, they wake up to discover that they have been robbed of all of their possessions; someone had drugged their drinks! They hike to a nearby village, and run into some trouble with the locals, but are rescued by a friendly teenager named Kiko who promises to take them to his uncle's house.

But in reality, Kiko is leading them to their fates: his 'uncle' is a crazed surgeon harvesting the organs of 'gringos' in order to help poor ailing Brazilians who are desperately in need of life-saving transplants.

Structurally, this movie is very similar to both Hostel and Wolf Creek, with a slow build up which allows the audience to get to know the characters, before eventually unleashing the horror towards the end of the second half. Thankfully, it is neither quite as childish or as dumb as the former, or as dull and ridiculous as the latter. There are still a few moments where one questions the wisdom of the decisions made by the victims, but, on the whole, events unfold in a reasonably believable fashion.

Best bits include the opening bus accident, the nasty and pretty gory 'operation', a great 'chase' through a series of underwater caves (all the more thrilling if you're a bit claustrophobic), and any scene in which the babes of the film totter around in their skimpy swimwear.
