What a place pandas, polar bears, penguins, lions, tigers and much much more. One of the best zoos I’ve been too. Very busy but didn’t affect seeing everything we wanted too

Pandas, polar bears, and a farm cat!
You get a lot for your money at this zoo! Phenomenal! It’s easy to get to from the tram stops, and lots of buildings to explore and lots of walking! We had lunch at the restaurant in the middle of the zoo (the quick serve kiosks were all so busy) and they were clearly struggling with numbers. The food was delicious though. Highlights were definitely the pandas and polar bears, but everything was amazing! The only downside was how busy it was - people don’t seem to recognise personal space anymore but was quite frustrating

gorgeous zoo, very spacious ( for the animals)
Fantastic zoo! I dont like zoos because of the small enclosure, but this place was amazing. some animals we didn't see because they were hiding, I saw one fluffy leopard paw, but this is also a good thing, it means they really do have lots of space. nice place, recommend it a lot.

    Oldest zoo in the world
Loved our walk around the zoo with some amazing big hitters including pandas, hippos, rhinos and a polar bear seen in quick succession. I’ve given it 4 stars as the place is not easy to get around. I saw a guy in a wheelchair struggling to get up the hill to the farm they have. It’s also got a lot of repair work always going on.

    The best zoo
Excellent zoo, actually one of the best I have ever been to, many animals which you can see from good angles and very close. Also there is fresh water available for guests so we could enjoy our experience without dehydration. Also I love you dont have to climb up to the hills and all is in one flat place. Very nice zoo.

    Zoo visitors
My husband and his son had visited the zoo a long time ago when they were living in Vienna. So the memory lane was great. He was able to say that many of the enclosures had changed a lot for the better during the 15+ years. Me and our little person enjoyed the zoo a lot. The place was clean and it seemed that the animal welfare was taken into account. Would recommend.

    Best zoo ever!
This is without doubt the best zoo we have ever visited. Set within a huge park, it is simply gorgeous and if you go in Autumn the colours of the leaves are amazing. Such an amazing range of animals, many we do not have in UK!

Great zoo and lovely day out
We loved our day at Vienna zoo. It took us about 4 hours to walk around. There’s a varied amount of animals and the enclosures were big. We did find food was expensive but found all of Vienna to be. Some of the signs in the park were in English and then the signs did disappear. But we did just enjoy watching the animals. We really liked the map and how it gave you pathways to follow to make sure you see everything. Would definitely recommend

    As good as can be
Visited the zoo during a long city break in Vienna. It was my favorite zoo visit ever - and I have been to San Diego and Animal Kindom at Disney World amongst others, so there is stiff competition. It's not too big, so we could see nearly everything in the few hours we had available. Views and photo opportunities were wonderful. Everything clean and well maintained. Animal welfare seemed as good as could reasonably be given that it is a city zoo on a relatively small site.

The territory of the zoo is very large. A zoo plan is issued, which is very useful and interesting. Spending the whole day here with children is very interesting and informative. The enclosures with animals are very large, it seems that the animals here are good and safe. There are a lot of animals. Some live in enclosures in enclosed spaces, so if it’s cold outside, you yourself can warm yourself indoors while watching animals. If it’s hot outside, then on the contrary in the rooms you can hide from the sun. Of course, pandas, a symbol of this zoo, aroused great interest in us. Rhinos, hippos, flamingos, jellyfish are also unique .. The son has long dreamed of seeing an anteater, and here his dream came true. It was also fun to watch the game of seals and penguins. For a snack they saw only kiosks, but there were very long lines to them, so they could not try what was there. They could sit and freshen up only in a cafe near the exit from the zoo.

An enjoyable visit but given the boast about being Europe’s best zoo, expectations were high.

Alas this is a run of the mill zoo.

Decent but no better.

In lots of the enclosures you either couldn’t see or could barely see the animals.

Animals deserve privacy and their health is paramount, but it’s very easy for a modern zoo to create enclosures which suit the needs of the animals and the paying public.

Queues for food a drink were also 20 minutes at lunchtime which is unacceptable and clearly not enough outlets were open.

Lots of empty and abandoned enclosures too.

Worth visiting if you like zoos, which I do.

But I’d be surprised if this zoo belongs in Europe’s top 10

The new look of the zoo is great and it gives the animals better habitats and the visitors an adventure when exploring. It's a bit pricey of course but I gladly pay if it means that the animals are well taken care of. I have not had the chance to see the new "shows" yet but I have fond memories of watching the seals and ice bears as a child.

I was here sunday 2 weeks ago ( a couple of days before the corona-madness) It was a sunny day and very crowded with lots of families. The zoo is not huge, but it has a panda (I saw one), a baby icebear ( I did not see it) and all the usual animals. I left just before 12 o clock because it was to busy and noisy. Before that, it was ok altough quite a few animals were out of sight.

Visited on a v cold morning in January, the zoo is situated in the grounds of and about 15 mins from the main entrance of Schloss Schönbrunn, the zoo itself is quite small and we walked around it easily in 2 hours, super of views of the 2 giant pandas both in their indoor house and outdoor run, lots of other animals to see both outdoor or in large indoor areas.
The only negative was that the big cats do look forlorn in their enclosures esp the tiger, walking on its v well worn track.
I would recommend esp to see the pandas.

They call it the Europe's oldest zoo. I call it the best zoo that I've ever been to. The
cleanliness of the zoo and the wellbeing of
animals hosted here impressed me. I wish
every other zoo in the world could be kept at the same level. My recommendation for the first time visitors is obtaining a map at the entrance, taking note of the feeding times of the animals and planning their tour accordingly because witnessing the feeding of animals doubles the zoo experience.

I feel genuinely disappointed in that I need to post this 2* review. If you see my other reviews, I like to place 5* reviews only. The reason I felt compelled to post this is that my wife, daughter and me felt uncomfortable during our visit there.
I am sure that if we were to speak to the zoologists and scientists who work at Vienna zoo, we would probably discover they do important animal conservation work, as is the . I really do not want to anything away from any good work they do. Our problem though is the cramped, dull environments a lot of their large animals appeared to be kept in. I am not making this comment flippantly. We have been to a number of zoos around the world, and have seen a lot larger environments. For example, in one place (which I will not name because I think it would be inappropriate to make direct comparison) they have a “circuit” which allows the cheetas to “build up speed”. I get the impression that in Vienna, in order to accommodate many species, they have reduced the area available for each.
HOWEVER:
The wooded area with the native European animals e.g, wolves, and the tree-top walk, is wonderful, for animals and humans alike. It saved the day.
I have a suggestion to make:
Expand this area if possible, including educational areas about European environments and local habitats, or alternatively at least reduce the number of imported species so that each one can have a larger, more natural habitat.
Again, apologies that I did not find this visit to be an entirely positive experience.

Thank you for your feedback. We were awarded to be the best european zoo for five times in a role and our animals are kept extremly well. Expanding the area in a UNESCO world heritage site is not an option. We are glad, that you enjoyed part of your viist to Vienna zoo.

The place is big, clean, large cages for animals and surely worth a visit. Alot of information and can spend several hours to visit all attractions. We had booked tickets online about €45 each including zoo, palace and other attractions close to zoo. Interesting especially if with children.

We decided to pop into the Zoo after a morning at the Palace. It was 20 euro for adults but only 10 euro for teens. The zoo had so many animals we were there until closing. There was a lot to see and a lot of walking as it is built on the side of a hill. There was a nice view of Vienna from the top on the tree trail. They had all the animals you would expect and then some. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because some of the enclosures seem quite compact for the animals and it was clear that some animals were very use to captivity and did not seem to have much natural behaviours.
