I had trouble finding information about this place that was reliable so we bit the bullet and paid for a taxi to take us and we'd figure it out as we went. We nailed it. Here's our tips:
    - The "mandatory guide" rule just means they have guides there and you can't run in solo. It doesn't mean you have to book through a tour operator.
    - It's 40 mins of hiking up a small mountain but it's only that long cuz of 15mins of stopping so out-of-shape members can catch their breath.
    - Cheap watershoes are fine, don't worry about the more aggressive hiking sandels
    - The strong current from the river in some spots may cause you to land on the side of your foot, or lose footing when walking over loose rocks. If you have fragile bones this could be ugly.
    - Guides are hit or miss in their comfort level with English as well as pleasantry.
    - Guides are VERY good at helping people up and down various climbs which is critical at keeping things moving, and keeping people safe.
    - I walked up to the ticket counter and he explained only the 7 waterfalls due to low water levels. I slapped a 1,000 pesos down not knowing what it would cost. He clicked a few buttons and got me and my wife a ticket for that price. After talking to others it sounds like I got a deal.
    - It takes 2hrs so if you make friends with a taxi driver when you land, ask him what he'd charge to bring you to the waterfalls, hang around for 2hrs then bring you back. Way better than packing into a bus and likely similar in price.
    - We didn't bother with the buffet, photo upgrade, zipline, monkeys, or the gift shop and we still say 5 stars.
    - Tip your guides!

    Just do it!

Don’t be afraid, this was an incredible experience and I am so glad that even though I am terrified of heights. The views are amazing, the grounds are great and well kept and the ride up and down were smooth.

We visited Mount Isabel de Torres as part of a cruiseline excursion, so we took a small bus from Puerto Plata up to the top. It was foggy and drizzled rain for half the time we were in the park but that didn't dampen our enthusiasm for the beautiful flowers and plants along the paths in this well-kept park. We were able to catch a glimpse of the town from where the cable cars usually disembark, and the fog lifted enough for us to snap a picture of the Christ statue.

There are several paths to walk which when it is wet can be a little bit treacherous, but they do have handrails and steps to assist.

This Island is truly paradise in the middle of the ocean. The only down side is that because its so small, there aer a lot of people there all at one time and when there is a group that is all about drinking, its very loud and not really enjoyable. Great snorkeling here. Water is pristine. It would be great if the trips of different companies were spaced out so that they don't all overlap at the same time.

Great hotel. The room was clean, the staff was helpful, the breakfast was great, and its within walking distance to lots of shopping. We had a great experience and will definitely return.

This is a great beach with nice sand, no rocks, wide beach area with some wind and waves. Water was warm and lovely, seating was difficult however.

Lots to do at Amber Cove. We choose a day at the Senator. All inclusive $68 per person, included towels, beach chairs. Unlimited drinks and food. Lots of pools to use, beach is rocky so use water shoes, great for snorkeling. Take a taxi, don't walk and get lost..I would not recommend the free beach..it was very dirty Lots of trash. Luckily a security guard took us to the Senator!! Beautiful resort.

It was an interesting stop that was provided as opart of our day tour. It was a very short tour inside, maybe 5 minutes, but the lady inside that gave us information as we walked through was very friendly. Yes, there are mosquitos and other insects in amber like in the movies. So cool. The gift shop is also very nice, but very expensive.

This is still a nice visit, but it is small, the place was late to open, but the exhibits and unspoiled interior were still great. As predicable for a July, it was really hot, and surprisingly, this place had no taxis. Still, nice view, OK walk form most of the cruise ports, and a nice place to visit. Entry is about two dollars.
