I learnt about this cloud many years ago after watching the movie Clouds of Sils Maria.
I’m wondering when it occurs as I will be visiting the area in October
I stayed several times in the hotel the film was made and I have seen the Maloja Snake 4 times.

It's typically in autumn evenings and into early mornings, very rarely also in winter. It's like the could dragons depicted in ancient Chinese pictures, a long cloud formation sneaking along the hillside and into and out of the valleys, that is why it is called the Maloja snake. It's caused by the Maloja wind, a strong and regular wind between the Maloja pass and the valley barrier in S-chanf. Have seen it frequently in September from the Samedan golf course. . It is lovely (could do without its name of Malojaslange…). Don’t like snakes!
