This is the most beautiful, quaint little city ever. Gorgeous frescoes on many of the houses, alpine charm, a beautiful church, and of course thePassion Play.

The garden front of the house is painted with a fresco by Franz Zwinck, 1784, depicting the denunciation of Jesus by Pontius Pilate (hence how the building got it's name). Frescos on buildings are very unique to Oberammergau and have been meticulously maintained over the centuries by extremely talented artists. And, there are many talented artists who work in the building who you can talk to about their work. We ate our takeout lunch on a bench in the garden and it was nice to get some Vitamin D and enjoy he flowers. I'm grateful that the plan to turn the house into a parking lot didn't happen.

Our ski lift ticket at Kolbensattel included 3 free hours at WellenBerg. We went over and really enjoyed our visit. Hopping into the water post skiing was very relaxing. There is a large indoor swimming pool. Then a smaller swim area with warm water. The warm water pool has a channel you can follow to go to a warm water pool outside. There is seating in the outdoor pool - even pads where you can lean your head back. We really enjoyed the warm water post skiing : - ) The view from the outdoor pool and from inside (given the lovely large windows) is just wonderful - overlooking the snow covered mountains. There is a changing area with lockers when you arrive. In the swim area there is a snack bar. There are also nice lounges facing the great views that you can enjoy. Not sure how towels work there so I would suggest that you bring your own. Seemed to be a popular town spot for all ages. We had great fun.

Another fairytale town in Germany. Small, but cute. Really nice to walk around, the view of the closeby mountains makes the visit much more pleasant.

We stopped here just to check it out, and glad that we did. It was lots of fun! We purchased the tickets at the bottom and took the chairlift to the top.

It looked like you could have the option of hiking to the top and get a ticket from there too? At the top of the chairlift there looked like a few activities like children's playground.

The ride itself took about 5mins I think, and was quick! The toboggan is held onto the rails, you have a seatbelt on so felt safe the whole time. I had the youngest child in the toboggan with me while the older boys went by themselves.

Everyone had a great time and they were raring to have another go!

One thing - the 10yo boy mentioned he had to lean quite far forward to release the brakes, and found it uncomfortable the whole way down (awkward angle, using leg muscles too). It didn't stop him wanting another go though.

I'm always impressed by the great amount of thought and passion that German museums put into the art of display. Here, not only did they reuse stage costumes from the last 20 years to create an outdoor artstallation*** that surrounds the museum, but one artist got the interesting idea to take all the hair cut off villagers after the last play and use it to form an ultra long tress that guides visitors from one display to the next.
The exhibits were interesting, especially the woodcarver's room...and the Roman remains found in a cave near the village...and the magnificent displays of the church nativity and the Marriage at Cana!
***these individual panels are evidently for sale after the run of the Passion Play!!

This is a once in a lifetime experience. It is visually and acoustically stunning, and beautiful. Although it is sung entirely in German, there are books of the text available for purchase in many languages. Many will know the story though.
This quaint, little town centuries ago pledged “to perform the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ”, to honor God from saving them from the plague. What incredible faith and devotion! So, every ten years this spectacle comes to life.
However, the directors have left out the most important event in this production. THE ACTUAL RESURRECTION! There is no visible resurrection of Jesus. It is now relegated to "an act of faith", as the angel announces to Mary that He has risen.
I will be honest. As a man of faith, this was such a disappointment. The culmination of all of His suffering and death was HIS LITERAL RESURRECTION as related in the Scriptures. For some reason, this was removed from the presentation.
My hope is that this village will recommit to their pledge and once again bear witness of Christ's suffering, death AND resurrection.

The ride up the chair lift was beautiful and you can see Oberammergau from the top. The Alpine Coaster was the highlight as it is very long and quite thrilling. You can go really fast if there aren't any people ahead of you holding you up.

You can find this fountain in the center of the town of Oberammergau. It is an attention-grabbing beautiful piece of local art, but it is difficult to find more information about it. Reportedly the theme alludes to the plaque experience in the village.
