What travelers are saying
- Kelly BIowa4,371 contributionsI’m not sure how it is the rest of the week, but it was busy on the Saturday that I was there. There was a farmers market going on, a beer garden, and wine drinking section. Lots of people milling around. I was surprised to see a patch of wildflowers blooming in the midst of the Markt. There’s also some great views of the surrounding historic buildings.Written October 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kelly BIowa4,371 contributionsA small neighborhood with timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and a feeling of medieval Germany. Great photo ops. Several shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s also pretty close walking distance to several other must-see sights of Mainz. I walked through it on the way to see St. Stephan’s Church.Written October 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Charlene LFort Worth, TX124 contributionsI was properly wowed upon entering. The outside of the church is intriguing with its double tower, but I was completely unprepared for what lay inside. Stunning ornamentation!! The artistry of the paintings, the plasterwork, frescoes, the gold and ebony everywhere. Breath-taking. And very few people there the morning I went in...I think it is overshadowed by the Dom and other churches. So worth a stop on your walking tour of Mainz.Written June 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Kelly BIowa4,371 contributionsFun little character on the pedestrian traffic lights. I wish more cities would do this as a fun little extra thing, but I would imagine it’s a bit cost prohibitive over the ordinary ones.Written October 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - gfsc5Perth, Australia1,484 contributionsThis amazing wooden column sits in the square adjacent to the cathedral. It's a form of fundraiser and was used to raise funds for German soldiers in WW1. People paid for a nail and it was then hammered into the column. The more money paid, the more nails you got. Take time to take a look at some of the patterns. It wasn't just a random hammering of nails.

The current station was built from around 1882 to 1884 and opened in Oct 1884. The station was bombed a number of times during the war and reconstruction of it occurred during 1945 with improvements being made to the layout, including a more recent second double track that took 5 years to complete by 2003. The last steam train left in 1959. We walked and used services to and from it a few times when in Mainz to travel to other areas. Located immediately outside are local and long distance bus services, trams and taxi services. The bus services outside can be a little confusing as the numbering (Bus stops A,B,C,D ect) stop can be located all over the area and where you think the next bus stop may be, it may not. The station is busy, has free WC's in the area and a number of shops and food services that re reasonably priced and open until late. All staff we spoke and dealt with were friendly and polite. We stayed in a nice apartment near by that was around 10 minutes walk. We thought it was very centrally located to many attractions, hotels and apartments, with easy walking.Written February 26, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Renate VHartbeesfontein, South Africa1,096 contributionsThis small church is beautiful and colourful inside. The ceiling paintings celebrate episodes of the life of St Ignatius. The organ is really impressive. Next to the church is a small cemetery where the crucifixion group can be seen. In the garden is a large stone where the church has set up a mourning spot for everybody who can not visit the graves of their loved ones for various reasons. What a beautiful gestureWritten June 29, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- OldjackGreater Melbourne, Australia27,961 contributionsJohannes Gutenberg was born in Mainz around 1400 and claimed to be one of the most influential people in modern history as he invented printing with moveable metal type, a wooden printing press and oil based printing ink. His statue , a large one stands in Gutenberg Platz (where else) and was impressive. I had to check my history however.Written June 26, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- podrozniczka60New Jersey14,845 contributionsIt is always a special feeling to see any ancient Greek or Roman ruins. And here we are in German city of Mainz - the Mogontiacum able to see the remains of what at some point was the highest Aqueduct structure north of the Alps.Written October 18, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sue MWilliamsburg, VA1,502 contributionsThis is a square that the Mainz city plants a beautiful bed of flowers every quarter. We were struck by how lovely the garden is in the midst of the Old Town.Written May 20, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim WSindelfingen, Germany2,950 contributionsWhat an awesome war memorial to honor God and to show the negative impact of war on humanity. Only the dead see the end of war. We need memorials like this to remind us that we have the ability to create and the ability to destroy. We decide which one we want to do.Written March 19, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- OldjackGreater Melbourne, Australia27,961 contributionsAnother nice statue outside the church and one that tended to be over-looked. Saint Bonifatius was an English monk who was made Bishop of Mainz from 746-754. Worth a look.Written June 26, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- CloudFrankfurt, Germany609 contributionsThis square is very nice, located one step away from the Market Square. It offers a quiet sideway where one can taste a delicious ice cream in front of the National Theatre. Out of curiosity: on the same square, a sign marks the 50th parallel of latitude.Written June 19, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - podrozniczka60New Jersey14,845 contributionsYou should come here for fancier, more authentic or more sophisticated local wine selection for every taste. Local wines are emphasized and loved here and the owner couple are real experts and sommeliers, wine connoisseurs.Written October 9, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - podrozniczka60New Jersey14,845 contributionsThis monument complex is quite unusual. It consists of the 9 designed sandstone cubes. The same number as the letters in the name: GUTENBERG. It is located in front of the Gutenberg Museum. Each cube shows a letter on the side facing the cathedral.
