This was one of the few places we visited that we could walk off the ship and walk into the Old Town area of Mainz - very nice boardwalk area along the river bank.

This truly beautiful - originally late 19th century - church was reconstructed after the WWII. The surrounding is amazing - the gardens and fountains create unique atmosphere. Hopefully some day we will get to hear one of the organ music concerts this church is known for.

It is always a special feeling to see any ancient Greek or Roman ruins. And here we are in German city of Mainz - the Mogontiacum able to see the remains of what at some point was the highest Aqueduct structure north of the Alps.

This is a square that the Mainz city plants a beautiful bed of flowers every quarter. We were struck by how lovely the garden is in the midst of the Old Town.

This museum is very unique in that the majority of it is housed in a former convent. From fauna to minerals and crystals, the museum presents the history of the region in a very interesting way. However, I spent less than an hour here because the descriptions and labels are only in German, with some texts being particularly complex. The hours themselves are very limited, as the museum is only open from 10 am to 2 pm so I also felt rushed since I arrived shortly after 1 pm. I would recommend visiting the Wiesbaden Museum instead, especially for English speakers.

What an awesome war memorial to honor God and to show the negative impact of war on humanity. Only the dead see the end of war. We need memorials like this to remind us that we have the ability to create and the ability to destroy. We decide which one we want to do.

The museum has limited hours of operation but if you are spending most of your day exploring the citadel you will likely get a chance to visit Stadthistorisches Museum.
The exhibits explore various aspects of the 1000 years of history of city of Mainz. Many exhibits are temporary.

My son enjoyed the "Neustadttour" as his birthday activity with 5 friends. All of them are 11 jears old and had so much fun! They were realy enthusiatic about the tour. We actually organised the tour because a week ago my son did the "Altstadttour" at the birthdayparty of his friend. Skipping one or two stations they managed the tour completely on their own without theirs parent's help. And they accidentally learned a lot about Mainz wich was a nice side effect. We can relly recommend both tours!
Last not least the tours are safe outdoor activity during the time of the pandemic.

The Heune columns are round columns made of sandstone that were originally intended for the reconstruction of the Willigis Cathedral in Mainz that burned down in 1009 . They were probably completed in the 11th century in a quarry in the Bullauer Berge near Miltenberg. However, the builder probably opted for other supports, so that the round supports were never needed. There are said to have been 42 of the columns, in the 18th century there were still 14. As of 1960, it is estimated that only eight remain.

The Heunen columns, which are still preserved today, are located in different places. The best-known of them stands as a memorial on the market square here in Mainz. Two more are in Nuremberg and Munich, with another on the waterfront in Miltenberg.

You can also cross this nice old railway bridge over the River Rhine on foot or bike. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic is allowed. As on many bridges, lovers attach padlocks to it :-)

An impressive (and impressively clean!) building which melds the older part of the building with the newer structure on the roof. There a square in front of the building with a sensible Italian eatery where we were able to admire the Theatre over lunch.

Another nice statue outside the church and one that tended to be over-looked. Saint Bonifatius was an English monk who was made Bishop of Mainz from 746-754. Worth a look.

It is a very nice sport complex which can be explored on foot. Not a particular attraction if your time in Mainz is limited but soccer fans might be interested.

This square is very nice, located one step away from the Market Square. It offers a quiet sideway where one can taste a delicious ice cream in front of the National Theatre. Out of curiosity: on the same square, a sign marks the 50th parallel of latitude.
