Great Movie, Only Decent DVD and Blue Ray Releases
1961's "The Young Savages" is, in my opinion, one of the best of the "JD" or juvenile-delinquent dramas of the late 1950's and early 1960's.However, the DVD and Blue-Ray releases, while offering excellent picture and sound quality, do not include any special features, such as a behind-the-scenes documentary or a retrospective, which is usually what accompanies the movies of discs featuring "classic" movies (movies from decades past.)Considering the movie's history, an Evan Hunter teen crime novel loosely based on the 1957 Michael Farmer murder, with elements of the 1959 "Capeman" murders and the 1955 gang killing of William Blankenship, as well as Burt Lancaster's own reasons for doing the movie at a substantially lower pay rate than usual (his production company was in debt, hence his grudgingly agreeing to do this movie after his win at The Academy Awards for "Elmer Gantry"), a short, behind-the-scenes DVD or Blue-Ray "extra feature" should have been made for the discs. What's the point in buying the discs without those extras, since the movie can be streamed for much lower than the physical copies? (Put in some effort MGM/UA!)Also, curiously, a segment from the film's original release is missing in both the DVD and Blu-Ray.Like "Blackboard Jungle" (which was also based on an Evan Hunter/Ed McBain teen crime novel), "The Young Savages" opens with a "public service announcement" regarding the then-current problems of youth gang violence, and how the film intends to have it's (then) viewers think about the solutions to gang violence.Perhaps some modern viewers might find this "quaint," or even unnecessary, but from a historical perspective, that notice (by Basil H.Q. Henriques, an author and philanthropist noted for his work with youth) gives an extra layer of insight into society's perceptions of "juvenile-delinquency" at that time in history. That notice is cut from the DVD and Blu-Ray releases, while conversely, a similar notice at the beginning of "Blackboard Jungle" is left intact for that film's DVD release. If you're a fan (like I am), the discs are still worth getting, but if you want a DVD "extra," look on You Tube!

I'd seen this in the movies when it was first released (1961) and watch it whenever it's on TCM. It was really ahead of its time, a riveting and realistic look at the rivalry between the fictitious Italian-American street gang, "The Thunderbirds," and their Puerto Rican counterparts, "The Horsemen," in Manhattan's East Harlem. Directed on location by a young John Frankenheimer, with stellar performances by Burt Lancaster as the assistant district attorney charged with prosecuting three white youths on trial for the gang related murder of a blind Puerto Rican boy, and a pre-Kojak Telly Savalas as the NYPD detective lieutenant aiding him. Dina Merrill portrays Lancaster's "progressive" wife and Shelley Winters plays Lancaster's former girl friend and the mother of one of the three accused killers. A grittier version of "West Side Story."

An excellent film. Full of action and mystery, starring burt Lancaster and a then unknown Telly Savalas with still some hair left. Lancaster plays a prosecutor investigating a murder case in which three members of an Italian Street gang are accused of a hate crime that could put them on the electric chair in 1960 Harlem even though they are all under 18. Telly Savalas plays a detective who believes all of the accused are guilty. It is later revealed that the victim was a gang leader who played the blind man's bluff and the youngest defendant did not stab the victim, he only hit him with the blade handle. As a result all three defendants were saved from the death penalty, the oldest got 20 years, the second who went by the nickname batman was committed to an asylum until he is believed legally sane and the youngest defendant got one year in reform school.

Great, topical drama which shares some DNA with Westside Story, The Blackboard Jungle and others. It is kind of the anti-Westside Story, all teen angst and no music. Burt Lancaster, of course is great. He is especially Natty sporting a pork pie hat. Telly Savalas - the late, great actor - is kind of wasted as Lancaster's co-investigator of a brutal stabbing that appears to be gang-related. One note: apparently John Frankenheimer was a total dick to Dina Merrill. I am a huge Frankeheimer fan, but now slightly less so, knowing that he, like many maie Directors over the years, intimidated a fine actress into wanting to quit acting. Shameful. But he results of his Directorial work are not. Gritty, well acted stuff.

Does anyone know what a review is? A review isn't a long drawn out synopsis of the film! It's the writers opinions of the quality of the film and certain aspects of it. This film is one of the stand out films of the late fifties and early sixties that dealt with social commentary of the times. Burt Lancaster who is usually considered a very good B actor, but gives a stellar A+ performance. It is a very well done gritty crime drama of gang violence in New York City of the time. This film has a really good story and plot, and a good twist at the end. It ranks right up there with films of the period such as; 12 Angry Men, Inherit the Wind and many others. If you like Burt Lancaster, Well written and acted dramas from the fifties and sixties, then get this film!

This movie was very good. Thought provoking. I can also see a movie and 2 TV shows that was inspired by this movie. There was a lot of attention paid to detail
and some of the issues addressed in this movie is still prevalent to this day. I highly recommend you see this one. The only thing I didn't like was the abrupt ending.

This is based on a true story of a murder in NYC that was the result of two ethnic gangs fighting. John Frankenheimer proved early on that he would become a legendary Director in Hollywood. So in awe of Frankenheimer was Burt Lancaster, he asked him to take over The Birdman of Alcatraz direction. Great cast. Don't pass this one up!

The dvd was delivered in a timely manner and of good quality. This movie is a classic and that's why I ordered it. Rarely do you see it on TCM. However, it falls short in drama, Burt Lancaster is, as always excellent. Shelley Winters gives a good performance.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Seller AND Sound Quality😞
Reviewed in Canada on March 3, 2020
The movie was kind of "cheesy" but I bought it mainly to see Telly Savalas in it. He was great as was Burt Lancaster.

Unfortunately the sound went up and down throughout most of the movie, very loud and then very quiet.

The seller was not helpful and expected me to pay return postage. After several emails, I finally gave up. Will not buy from this seller again.👎

Helpful votes are always appreciated .❤

5.0 out of 5 stars It has all the sap of its time!

I first watched it on sky cinema and I recorded it, but, as time went by, I decided to have my own DVD for perfect viewing. And I am elated it just arrived minutes ago from Amazon uk! What makes it one of my favourites is the plot, the location and the movie stars. Among all the others, Dina Merrill shines in all her refined beauty and expertise, on the same level of Grace Kelly, although, to me, much less known here in Italy. The movie captures superbly the social atmosphere of the New York in that section. Worth having!

4.0 out of 5 stars An early Frankenheimer/Lancaster collaboration.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 22, 2011
An interesting early film (1961) from John Frankenheimer and the first of five collaborations with Burt Lancaster (followed by Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), Seven Days in May (1964), The Train (1964) and The Gipsy Moths (1969)). I have not seen the last of these, but I would say that the other three are superior films. That is not to say that this is not a fine movie (those others are very fine indeed) - production values are superb and the acting is of the highest standard - only the attitude to law and order seems a tad dated now that we think environmental factors have less of a role to play than we did at that time.

Well worth acquiring for seeing American film making at its best as it was in the fifties and sixties. It is also interesting to note that the first four collaborations with Lancaster were in black and white (I do not know about the last) - although this is not an important factor in this film, one does lament the late adoption of colour in films of the sixties.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Young Savages
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 20, 2010
The Young Savages was an excellent movie, I saw it when it was first released and have never forgotten it, the actors in the film depicted the mood and problems of the time brilliantly. To think I had to wait over forty years before I could buy it on DVD, what can I say, "it was well worth it" and I recommend this first class drama to anyone who appreciates a good movie.
