About
Known as “the city beneath the city,” Underground Atlanta has been the cultural heart of Downtown Atlanta since the 1900s. From basement speakeasies to the annual Peach Drop (where an 800-pound peach is dropped from the top of a building to ring in the new year), this arts, entertainment, and retail district has seen it all. Today, Underground Atlanta offers a multifaceted cultural experience featuring a virtual reality gallery, music clubs, and restaurants. travelers can also enjoy outdoor concerts, festivals, artisan markets, and more. This vibrant hub is conveniently connected to the Five Points train station, and just a short stroll from the scenic Broad Street Boardwalk. – Tripadvisor

Me and a couple of friends went to a drag bar here. They had great food and bar tenders. The drag show was amazing. They ask for audience participation and do a screening of the newest episode of drag race. Very fun.

This used to be a wonderful experience back in the 90's, and I was excited to visit again. Very disappointed - run down, smelled of urine, and was clearly a site for drug "transactions". Minimally populated art spaces. The neighborhood surrounding with closed/failed businesses and 70% empty storefronts.
Supposedly to be revitalized... but in reading the internet, it appears that those plans have been on hold for some years now.
I'd stay away.

Very unsafe!! Did I mention it's not safe?? Zero family atmosphere. I wouldn't go back as a grown man, much less with my wife and kids. The place was dark and reeked of pot and urine. Most stores had closed. There is a very bad element in this part of Atlanta, which is why no matter how many millions developers pour into this effort every so many years, it will never stay successful.

when I went there it was in the 1990s and it wasnt that bad but stilll a lot of businesses were closed and it looked like a lot of gangs were not just down there but a lot were living there. It was unsafe then and I would never go back until they have adequate security down there. I t could be a great place to see and visit but it needs to be cleaned up.

We were very excited to go to Underground Atlanta, after reading reviews and seeing pictures. Once our Uber driver dropped us off and told us to “be safe” that should have been a red flag. When we got there it was a ghost town. After about one minute of being in the area we heard a gun shot and no longer felt safe. Highly recommend you avoid this attraction.

I've always heard of Underground Atlanta. In town for the Braves-Yankees game, we set out on foot to tour the downtown area. With kids in tow, Underground was first on the stop. To my surprise, I was shocked! The majority of resertuarnts have closed down, shopping is minimal with the exception of "kiosk" type venders selling nothing but cheap Atlanta souvenirs and cheap jewelry. The food court consisted of about three unknown restaurants as the others have vacated. It is a very desolate, unsafe feeling with no polic in site. I wish I had read reviews before deciding to head here especially with my children with me.

The place is completely shut down and being torn down but Google still shows it open and so does trip advisor..we even went in nearly empty parking garage and got a ticket but nothing was there..we did not have to pay parking thank goodness. Someone needs to let it be known that it doesn't exist any longer

I was so excited to take my family to the underground only to find out once we arrived that there aren’t a lot of shops in the area anymore. The area is filled with homeless people and it doesn’t seem safe. I was disappointed and on my way back to our hotel I asked a police officer and he informed me that the underground was sold by the state of Georgia and the contractor that purchase the property hasn’t started construction yet but it’s planning on building apartment buildings and will have store fronts for retail space.

I went to Georgia State. I rode MARTA and got off at FivevPoints daily. I'm fairly comfortable in a urban environment. I made a mistake by even thinking I could enjoy and share memories of this place with my family. The city should be ashamed. They focused on Centinnial Park and just let this area go. It's not clean, not safe, and there is nothing to see here but homeless and street criminals and young hand wannabes. Stay away until Atlanta cares about this area again.

Is it safe? What, specifically is there to do? I have read many negative comments about the Underground. Is it above ground or really underground ? What else is in the area that a 19 year old would enjoy?

The "Original" UNDERGROUND was really underground. Its now closed for renovation. However now the stores surrounding it are being called Underground, not the same though. The experience UNDERGROUND was really cool. There is plenty shopping to do in that area and that's about it for a 19 yr old. If you haven't made the trip you should and be the judge of it. Not dangerous, you have to be aware of surroundings anywhere you go BUT the bums there are VERY AGGRESSIVE. BE SAFE, HAVE FUN.

Is the underground in Atlanta Georgia open for business

My husband and I really loved the Underground when we visited Atlanta in '96. We were excited to take our two teenage children today. When we arrived we were stunned at the change. It is about 80% vacant. When we finally figured out how to get to the stores that were open, we smelled Marijuana being smoked. It was very sketchy. We walked together and got out of there. After we walked through downtown a little and headed back to our car we walked on the street and walked back to the parking rather then going back through the underground. Pretty scary area all around there. Area gets a little better once you get near Ski Wheel and Centennial Olympic park. We are not sure why this place is still advertised.
