About the author
Judith Kerr was born in Berlin, the daughter of a distinguished German writer. She left Nazi Germany with her family in 1933 and fled across Europe, eventually settling in England. Years later she wrote about her experiences in her best-selling novel for middle-grade readers When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit. She is also the author and illustrator of numerous picture books, including The Tiger Who Came to Tea, which was first published in 1968 and has since sold more than one million copies worldwide.

The story overall was fine. The tiger was rude, came in ate all of their food and drinks and then left- never to return. My choice to return was because of the line “and all Daddy’s beer” this line probably comes from the time and location and I understand that. I’m not a prude, I can kick one back just as well as anyone else can but I’m not comfortable reading it or changing the word up to hide it from one of my kids. I feel when I read that she will ask what beer is and if she can have some. Obviously since she’s five the answer is no and I feel it brings up a topic that’s pointless with an end result of her not being allowed to try something.
To me- it’s a line that I’m not comfortable with reading. For this reason we have chosen to return.

The story is my favourite part, and I’ll never sick of it, coming from a parent who has read this innumerable times now. I love how matter of fact the narrative is, almost comedic at points, making you just accept the events as they unfold. I think that’s why this is one that’s stood the test of time, as it doesn’t really need a morale, or underlying message, nor a large overarching story, but just a funny anomaly set within what is otherwise a very normal family household scene.
The sentence structure is short and simple, and I can imagine my daughter learning to read with this book sometime in the near future.
We bought the board book version, which has stood the test of time (2 years so far) with very little wear and tear despite being handled regularly. The cover and pages feel like they have an almost protective sheen to them, which I feel is a good thing (compared to some other board books where the corners start to fray very quickly).
All in all, only happy memories associated with this book, and not a bad thing to say about it.
